R77 Work Train #74 Went Up In Smoke At 57st-7th Avenue

So after struggling with an extremely heavy load and going at 1MPH for a very long time causing major delays in the 60th Street Tunnel
The struggling diesel finally gave in at 57th St and broke down on the local track
Everything had to stop on the express track and eventually bypass the station
I also wanna congratulate the two employees who managed to get the struggling train as far as they did and help put out the smoke all while getting insulted by passengers , and even getting constantly annoyed by the TSS and dispatchers. Yet they were extremely calm throughout this ordeal.
Hopefully you enjoy

This is what happens when the MTA doesn’t replace their old equipment. The longer you use them past their prime, the higher your chances of situations like this becoming more likely.

Well in order for the MTA to replace their old equipment, they need revenue. And in order for them to have revenue, they need to rely on tolls and fares, and fare evasion is a big problem for the MTA.

Great smoke detection and reaction. Nothing like smoldering train poison smoke to stand around in. Not to mention climbing down into a confined space with your body facing a hot smoldering train.

As a train driver here in the UK, I can’t quite believe trains are still running and members of the public haven’t been evacuated. Just look how quickly the smoke was building up just before the NYFD arrived. And still the station stayed open. Correct me if I’m wrong, but surely some MTA rule book module standards pertinent to safety and emergency’s were breached here? The decision to keep trains running in passenger service at the very least is mind boggling. This absolutely would have breached rule book standards here, and our Rail Accident Investigation Branch would be all over this one. I’ve seen training videos like this on what ‘not’ to do, quite literally, from previous incidents caught on camera. I really am lost for words, and if anyone even so slightly thinks I’m exaggerating, please google the ‘King’s Cross disaster’. An example of what can happen when a small smouldering event on an underground station can quickly escalate and claim lives. Yes those circumstances were different, but if a fire takes hold underground, it becomes a serious hot mess in super quick time with devastating consequences.

Fellow Brit here - I share your amazement. Smoke pouring out and everyone just standing around, not even trying to get away from the smoke/fire - and trains still stopping! Utterly bonkers. I can't believe that Subway staff aren't trained to get people out when there's smoke - a) there is literally no smoke without fire - and a lot of fire might be about to erupt at any moment, and b) most deaths in fires are caused by smoke inhalation.

There are no standards with the decrepit MTA. The switchboards that govern the N and D lines are still from the 50s. Transit unions prevent any modernization fearing their loss of jobs at the expense of riders' punctuality and reliability.

This is exactly what happened to the R 32s when I was last riding them in the city 4 year ago the train was hauling ass on the A Express and one thing I noticed was the car did not have air-conditioning and it was rush-hour so everybody was pacing in like sardines burning up basically and than we get to 42nd St we pull in first 45 seconds later a R160 E pull up on the local track. We got off and started walking and we looked over and the same car that did not have AC was smoking exactly like this I was just stuck everybody was running, and my mom grabbed my hand she was like you never stay in situations like that, and we kept running all the way down the concourse into the hallway The craziest thing is how people act different around each other. It was like a big social experiment. I bet if it was a tiny crowd it wouldn’t have been that much of a reaction, but this was during rush-hour, and this could’ve easily took a wrong turn, if somebody would’ve tripped, causing everybody to fall behind them.

Looks like a fuel line rupture as those work trains run on diesel fuel. That’s probably why the fire was hard to put out. It was being fed by all the fuel dumping out onto a hot surface in or on a motor. Just my opinion

Diesel fuel will not auto ignite unless it reaches 410 to 536F, it also would need to have the perfect amount of diesel atomized and the right amount of air for it to ignite, so it is not likely. The smoke appears to be more electrical in nature.
