More than five decades ago when I was a high school student in india the song you mentioned as an inspiration for the song of RDB sahib and sung by my favourite singer Rafi ji was one of the most popular nepali songs among us .Since then, to say , there have been many poular block buster songs in nepali ,mostly folk n modern folk songs n based on them, the tune of which have been and are ,hereto, being realised justifiably by many indian musicans of the indian film world which have become very popular n are being loved by huge mass of the audience which proves that music n arts realise no bounds and the artists of all fields are not the hegemoney of one nation, one religion,one ethnic group ,certain class of people n one race only. They are the ornaments that befits all people irrespective of languages,custums, casts ,creeds,and nationalities.

The first person to tell RDB that this is a tune lifted from a Nepali folk song was Shammi Kapoor himself. Shammi Kapoor wanted SJ to score music for Teesri Manzil but Majrooh Sultanpuri insisted with Shammi to at least listen to RDB's tunes first. The first tune that RD recited was this one and Shammi took no time to identify it.

Very good research. I got to know this fact only through this video. RD was in the habit of copying western themes, although this one was quite homely to him as he also belonged to the mountain ranges of that area. But I think western music of the last century has been so penetrating that every one has lent ears to it, so much so that the greatest music duo of Bollywood, the inimitable Shanker Jaikishan also copied some songs from West, a fact, hardly known to the masses. But SJ and RD, both produced original works also which are milestones in music.

If his recrafting the tune made it immortal , credit should go to his music acumen and creativity ...even the iconic Mehebooba o mehebooba of sholay was inspired from a western theme , which surpassed all in popularity.... given the volume of music he had to churn out for the industry, few such inspired music is pardonable given the improved final version

Sir, You have not told the complete story but just a small version. Initially Dev Anand was to act in this film produced by Nasir Hussain and directed by Vijay Anand. Since Anand brothers had tied up with SDB but as per SDB, Vijay Anand had promised SDB to give good break for RDB. RDB had already composed music for Chote Nawab, Bhoot Bagala & Baharone Sapane. First 2 films were musically hit but could be because of artists it hardly made impact on box office as Mehmood was hero who was more comedian than hero and was never considered at the level of other heroes like Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar or Dev Anand which plays significant part in box office hit. Baharonke Sapane was by then new newcomer, Rajesh Khanna and was an average film. Somehow Dev Anand quit the film Teesri Manzil and he was replaced by Shammi Kapoor who was also at top then and had keen sense of music. RDB was worried whether he would be retained or not as Shammi was insisting on Shankar Jaykishan or O P Nayyar. But because of the request of Nasir Hussain Shammi was requested to listen to tune of RDB and then decide. So program was arranged and very first song RDB played tune was Diwana Mujhsa Nahi and immediately Shammi got up and started singing Nepali song by Arun Lama. RDB was frustrated knowing his copy was open and went in the sitting balcony. So next tune was Aja Aja which impressed Shammi and he told to go ahead. This is known to many. Even earlier O P Nayyar had copied many tunes from English songs. Please listen to Ameen Sayani Geetmala volume covering songs of 1955 till 1958. He has clearly told which song was copied from which English song. I have all the songs of Binac from 1952 till 1974. Unfortunately, young anchors like you hardly listen to deatils of songs by Ameen Sayani Sahab who is a living legend. Your coverage is correct but too short. Earlier copied songs were from Mem Sahab, CID, Asha and many more including Samadhi 1948.

Kindly note that the many adaptations were done by also Shankar Jaikishan, O.P.Nayyar , Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Salil Chowdhury, S.D.Burman etcthe list goes on not only from Western but Folk songs and even old gazals etc. The list is absolutely available. From 1966, it was well known that this folk music was adapted from Nepal and was seconded by none other than Shammi Kapoor but R.D.Burman as always used lovely arrangements and immaculate Rafi Saab voice made the song immortal and to be honest sounds better than the original though the original Nepali song is also outstanding composition. To adapt is one thing but many composers ruin the original song and use no own contribution but here if one notes then earlier composers like Shankar Jaikishan Salil Chowdhury, O.P.Nayyar , S.D.Burman and also R.D.Burman added their own contributions to add musical excellence.

It is unfair to blame RD of being inspired from outside sources, the main culprit was Nasir Husain who will always come with particular record and force RD to make song on this line, this happened many times even in Yadon Ki Barat song "Chura Liya" and medley in "Hum Kisi Se Km Nahin", and again for a film Nasir came with a record and RD was deeply irritated and rebuked Nasir by saying " Kya Nasir tum jab-tab koi naya record lekar aa jaate ho" .. In filmdom producer's say is supreme, So you need to correct yourself and declare that Nasir was main culprit to force RD to do what he wanted.. Will you ? RD was greatest ever music composer happened in music, he scored 2000 songs in Bengali & Hindi.. Filmfare Instituted " RD Burman Award" in ,1994 for budding music composer and AR Rahman was first recipient even Govt of India issued postal stamp in the honour of RD Burman.. If he was so copycat as you tried to prove, such honour he would never had conferred upon. RD is composer of millennium.. Your presentation is controversial without knowing the fact behind the posted song..
