Yo RA I love these talks you have with vlad man, discussing hiphop and breaking down the structure of the artform, but i couldnt disagree more on the LL Pac issue. Drake is lyrical and got nice wordplay but all he raps about is girls and corny stuff just like LL did. Guys like Pac Nas and Jay portrait the image on the streets and to me thats what makes a top ten MC

I agree with everything u said. People always making these lists and don't even know a person's musical catalog. Most of these clowns that comment can't even tell u one thing about Cutmaster DC, Mantronix, etc. You grew up in that era so your opinion is highly respected.
@TheEdub17 жыл бұрын
A question I always wanted to ask u RA who wins a battle in there prime Rakim or Big Daddy Kane? I always say Kane because of the punchlines and his wit. And of course his showmanship if it was a live battle like it was supposed to be. And who are your top 10 favorite rappers?

Lmao yall only argument is that Pac werent lyrical. Pac was all about passion and emotion, sending a direct clear message that why he aint care about being 'lyrical' so how can you use that against him. Even then its still wrong as he proved on many tracks that he could be lyrical when he wanted to, just listen to the Makaveli album where he was lyrical AND had SUBSTANCE while others may have slick rhymes but aint sayin nothing.

Pac was 'lyrical' he had great rhymes. were they the most technical, no but he could tell story at times and be poetic all day. if you are poetic, you are "lyrical" to some degree in my book. everything ain't all about multisyllables I mean shit.

@raigresham12987 жыл бұрын
Mookaron how about the fact that Bigge made "Who Shot Ya?" About a fictional foe, and Pac felt the force of the lines and the reception that song got and got so on his feelings he came back with "Hit Em Up", that basically was just someone ranting over a beat, wasn't witty, and only memorable for helping to fuel the beef. Biggie did get his attention as well with the line from "Brooklyn's Finest": If Faith had twins she'd probably have 2 Pacs. Now that's not saying that ended Pac, but just when he was challenged lyrically, he couldn't even really respond in kind. And is that the litmus test now for a great lyricist? You have to have ended a career? Then that would mean LL is better than him because he did it to 3 different rappers in different generations of the genre. Show me where Pac did that....
@raigresham12987 жыл бұрын
Artman Nexus Hit Em Up is pretty weak lyrically not to mention Biggie did a better job on that beat on the Get Money Remix.

If LL ever had a public beef with Tupac, he wouldn't have let Tupac pull him down to the nonsense level, he would have forced Tupac to keep it Hip-Hop, and one to one, man to man, LL would have been completely remorseless. He would have never backed down. He would have destroyed Tupac.

2pac may not have been the most lyrical in the sense of punchlines and lining up syllables per se, but his imagery and his storytelling was always moving and powerful. His messages and his outspokenness coupled with these qualities is why he is mentioned among being the best of all time. When Public Enemy said "Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me". A lot of younger people think it's just a lyric. They don't understand the time (era) or the context. Those were very powerful words and it was throwing a dagger to the American power structure. Vlad wants to judge based on sales, hits or likes. When he can't accept in Hip Hop or the culture is what are you doing for the Hip Hop culture. Tupac said, I may not be the one, but I will have inspired the one, in an interview. What will drake have inspired? Not a stab on his music but what does he do for the culture?

Kevin X word!
@popetaytv7 жыл бұрын
Kevin X so you think their aren't plenty of young rappers that are nice that look up to or have been inspired by Drake? Being socially aware isn't the only way to influence and help hip hop culture. Look at all the trap rappers that grew up on and were influenced by Gucci. That's a cultural impact. Drake has continued to blur lines between R&B and hip hop, along with Cole, Kendrick, and Chance and guys like that he's reaffirming you don't have to be a street cat to rap. On a business side he's showing folk how to sustain your wave he's doing things for the culture .
@littlejimmyscumbag25517 жыл бұрын
Public Enemy said that because they're ignorant on what Elvis was. They come from the new school of thought which is "hate everything white in order to boost blackness" and black people sometimes ignorantly assume that white people look at icons who happen to be white as a symbol of whiteness. Michael Jackson is a symbol of blackness to black people but Elvis is not a symbol of whiteness to white people. White people do not think along those community based lines.
@kevinx92257 жыл бұрын
Little Jimmy Scumbag Well I beg to differ. PE was talking about the system and they were counter to what the main stream wants us to buy into. That hurt some people's feelings. My original comments were more about how powerful that line was at the time. It made it safer for others to go strong against the establishment. Kevin

Someone please explain this: During the early to late 90's New York *loved* Snoop & Dre, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, Likwit Crew and many other West Coast rap acts, but just didn't check for Tupac's music. He had a few songs that people thought were ok like "Get around" and "Keep ya head up" but it was never a situation where people were buzzing about his music the way they were for Wu-Tang, Gangstarr, Tribe, Snoop, Boot Camp etc.... So here is the question......Why not?
@robbierupac9442 Жыл бұрын
@BloodyJasonMask Any true 2Pac people know that album was his greatest deepest and more overlooked works in his entire career. Dear Mama was obviously a mainstream hit along with Me against the World being on Bad Boys soundtrack. But the album in full is by far his best overall project not 1 bad song and the message of him being depressed and in a very dark place while being incarcerated is just simply amazing even to this day .

Artistically and song wise, 2Pac still shits on most of his peers. Pac has more classic songs in his catalogs more than most rappers. Pac's passion and energy in most of his lyrics still can't be matched. Don't try and downplay who he was as an artist just because he wasn't spitting punchline after punchline. His work ethic and body of work is still one of the greatest in hip hop.

Pac social message: "THUG LIFE: Its okay to be a thug, and not try to be great, because we already lost". Before Thug Life, it was shameful to be a thug, and we were a better people for that. After Pac, a thug was the thing to be, and look at us now. The only people who look up to him and his "legacy" are losers. they seem to forget how he went from east coast pro-black to westside gangbanger...when your people look up to "heroes" like this no wonder why black folks can't get ahead...they don't feel they have to...Its all good in the hood. smh IMHO
@MRLEGEND1017 жыл бұрын
Pac was the best at delivery and capturing that lifestyle, thats why he meant so much to a lot of people. He was like the hip-hop version of blues...But instead of uplifting them, he told them it was cool to stay there...for someone to be that influential, it was a crime not to try to do something positive.
@kob4567 жыл бұрын
You know nothing about Pac or his music and his message went over your head. Tupac was never an "East coast pro-black MC." 2Pac came out the gate rapping Oakland, Marin City, and The Bay Area. Not once did he represent an NYC borough in any of his music. So don't rewrite history. Pac has always ripped the West. Second, Thug Life was a philosophy he and his Stepfather Mutulu Shakur who was in prison came up with to politicize the streets similar to how the Black Panthers movement were tied to the streets and Pac was supposed to be the face of the movement. Third Pac was never a "Westside Gangbanger." Pac never promoted gang banging in his music. He rapped about the effects of such things. On Pac's very last album, "Makaveli 7 Day Theory," he has songs like "Hold Ya Hed," "Krazy," and "White Manz World." which are all social and political songs. So again, you have no idea wth you are talking about
@MRLEGEND1017 жыл бұрын
kob456 lol Pac was born in harlem son...and of course the white mans oppression is part of the reason thugs should remain thugs right..throwing up the westside saying we'll ride on you mfs and I f*cked your wife is hardly revolutionary...he was a hypocrite and only low brow thugs "get" his message...the successful see that acting tough and barbaric it isn't the true path to prosperity. Only through education, peace, love and mutual respect can you rise above this lunacy...none of that was in his message
@kob4567 жыл бұрын
What does that have to do with anything I said? He went by MC New York before he got into the industry or before he ever signed a deal. That was a local rap name he was using at 18 or 19. On 2Pac's first ever album, "2Pacalypse Now," he went by his name 2Pac and was repping Oakland and the Bay. He never came into hip hop as a New Yorker, so stop it.
@kob4567 жыл бұрын
MRLEGEND101 Why are you telling me Pac was born in Harlem? First of all, I'm not even sure if he was born in Harlem. He was born somewhere in NYC and that's a fact. 2nd, where you are born is not the point. Pac still went through his most life changing moments living on the westcoast as a teen. 3rd, 2Pac throwing up the WS and riding on other rappers is called HIP HOP, you dumbass. That's what happens in hip hop. It's a competitive sport of music. 4th, Stop Looking at Pac as some "positive" rapper. Pac is not Common Sense. He never came in the game on some moral high ground. He was a flawed human being and he never tried to uphold the image of an MLK or Ghandhi. That's where people like you get it twisted. You hear a song like "Changes" and want to put him in a conscious category. 2Pac's whole style is to be a rebel. 2Pac was kind of following Malcolm X. That's what you don't understand. Yes, 2Pac did preach education, he did preach for brotherhood, he did preach unity, he did promote love for the SISTERS but he also talked about the HOES, spoke to the lowlives, and battled other rappers. This is what you call diversity. He's not some one trick pony.

@@kevinscott59 That’s because most pure hip hop fans like myself (I was born late 70’s) have listened to hip hop since the 80s so there’s an appreciation for the art form. These Tupac fanatics (their not the only ones) no nothing about the history of hip hop (exactly what RA referred to). And if social conscious rap is their thing…I bet none of them have much to say about Chuck D or Arrested Development, The Roots (to name only a few)..as they maybe have heard one song if that! But I don’t get so annoyed at that..I stick to what I like. However, last point to be made, the fanatics are as much of the problem as cooperations who have dumbed down hip hop and made it regress as a music genre…as these fanatics are the target audience who have supported it over the last 20+ years.
