R.A. the Rugged Man stopped by VladTV for another entertaining interview, and this time around he touched on his previous statements about Lil Yachty. The New York rapper said that Yachty fans are now looking up to him thinking that they don't need to learn how to rap in order to make it in hip-hop. He also added that he disagrees with Talib's sentiments about new artists, but R.A. said that he could respect their hustle without liking their music.
To hear more of what R.A. had to say, including why he thinks Kanye is overrated, hit the above clip.

Actually in the beginning of rap up until like 87, like 3/4 of rap was party records (Kurtis Blow, Afrika Bambaataa, Run DMC, Newcleus, the Miami Bass scene, the LA electro rap scene, UTFO, Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J). It wasn’t til the introduction of an alternative more lyrical and more hardcore artists that things became the “Golden era of 88-early 2000s” that all the old heads talk about. And even then all the alt hip hop and gangsta rap’s biggest hit of the 90s was party bangers

That's an oxymoron, to be technical it takes getting to a level of artistry to a point where you are able to be technical with it. You literally and philosophically can't say technicality doesn't mean you aren't a great artist. It would depend on what you mean by great and what I mean by great. Which would spark another debate in which we would argue who's version of great should more value, yours or mine. We would never agree so there's no point. You don't seem like one who would comprehend that you're even losing the argument

I agree with RA that the respect for the craft isn't what it used, but it's really debatable whether rappers could have become even more lyrical than they were in the mid to late 90's without totally alienating potential fans in the process. If you listen to Ras Kass, Canibus (1999-2003 especially), or some of the stuff that underground rappers like Sir Menelik and El-P were doing in the late 90's, you will probably reach the conclusion that that whole ultra lyrical thing arguably went as far as it could before it simply became a chore to listen to. Don't get me wrong, I love lyrical rappers, but they just aren't as marketable. Kendrick and Cole in some ways built on what artists in the last decade like Common and Lupe Fiasco started, mixing lyrical, socially conscious rap with pop hooks, and those guys are killing it right now commercially, but it's an incredibly difficult balancing act and most fail at doing it. Not even Kweli pulled it off on a mainstream level (e.g The Beautiful Struggle and Eardrum) and that guy had strong critical support and love from the hip-hop community. And both of those guys are much bigger than Common, Lupe and Kweli ever were. They are huge exceptions to the rule that aren't really indicative of anything in particular. They are talented guys that managed to break through and sell a shit ton of records, but it doesn't happen often. In short, I think the problem with mainstream rap being dumbed down isn't as big of a problem as the new underground rappers lacking innovation. That is a much bigger problem in my view simply because the underground was traditionally were the lifeblood was, where the most original ideas came from etc.

I mean they think they are and their fans think they are but they are not. They are just a retro act, like an all star game with old players on TV. Thats not the real shit or relevant in any form.
