Memorable Concert - Ustad Zakir Hussain with Kathak Maestro Pandit Durga Lal - 1980s New Delhi

A rare concert between two masters of rhythm: Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain (1951-) and the late Kathak magician Pandit Durga Lal (1948-1990). Sarangi maestro Pandit Ramesh Mishra provides accompanime nt alongwith Pandit Fateh Singh Gangani on Pakhawaj, Ustad Abdus Sami Khan on sarangi.
Pandit Durga Lal hailed from the Kathak school of the Jaipur Gharana and was awarded the Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Academy Award for his services rendered to Kathak. His untimely death at the young age of 42 shocked many fans and admirers.
Ustad Zakir Hussain is a living legend and tabla exponent hailing from the Punjab Gharana, having received training from his father, Ustad Allah Rakha (1919-2000). Zakir ji is considered amongst a select group of music icons in the world. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan for his services rendered to music.

First of all want to thank the organiser who put the video. Shabad Bahut chhote aur kam hain to describe Guru Ji's work. What dance, what Grace, what Taiyari, what Padant, what Chhakar, Foot work, har bol crystal clear with all dignity. My body is shiffering with pain and happiness after watching these Two Meastros togethet creating the Divine Magic Mahol. Aise Artists come on earth after 100s of years. My heartfelt soul touched pranaam to these great genius meastros. Pt. Durga Lal Ji and Ustad Zakir Hussein sahib. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕💕

Amazing performance. Most ppl just settle at 42 ,but the legend shri pt durgalal achieved so many accolades and prestigious awards at very early age before his untimely demise. Legends born with purposes and they fulfill the purpose. Rest of the artist today we know are amongst top most performers. God give them long life. Jai Hind

Speech less. Two great Artists, actually 3 legends. Ramesh Mishra ji's surile Sarangi. Can't control my tears, Guru ji was such amazing Artist. Wonder why God snatched him from us. But may be he achieved in that short time what people don't get whole life. His mission was completed and Gone 😢😢😢😢.

My God, I cannot express in words how blessed and humbled I am that this man is my Dada Guru. I see him perform pieces that I have been taught, yet I still do not comprehend that such a talented dancer exists, leave alone that I come from his lineage. How many times my hair stood on end I cannot count. I feel that I know him now, from this performance: his gentleness, his modest yet powerful charm, and above all his joy at his craft. I didn't think it was possible to love him more, but I do. God truly must have loved him so to take him away from us so early.

you are absolutely correct. his face describes waht talent is ineffable. his charm, his grace is unparallel. i know his daughter, she is a teacher yet can't be even looked aside him. we really lost a true diamond of india. hindustan ne dusra kohinoor khoya tha.

1989 दिसंबर में ग्वालियर में तानसेन समारोह में पंडित रविशंकर जी के साथ 2 घंटे पखावज बजाया था पंडित दुर्गालाल जी ने. मैं और मेरे गुरुजी ऐसा पखावज वादन सुन कर स्तब्ध रह गए थे. इस के कुछ दिन बाद ही वो दुखद समाचार आया की पंडित जी इंद्रसभा की शोभा बढ़ाने हेतु भूलोक छोड़ गए. मेरा सौभाग्य कि ऐसे महान कलाकार को साक्षात सुना. 🙏

वाह वाह नृत्य और वादन का अद्भुत संगम है ईश्वर की असीम कृपा से ऐसे अवतारी नृत्यकार परम विद्वान पंडित जी का अद्भुत नृत्य देखने का सौभाग्य प्राप्त हुआ उस्तादजी को उनकी अविस्मरणीय संगत के लिए बार बार प्रणाम 🙏 ऐसा समन्वय बहुत मुश्किल से देखने मिलता है और अब शायद ही ऐसा अवसर मिले! जय हो 🙏

Thanks! In the 90s I attended a private concert in Mumbai in someone's mansion - Pt. Birju Maharaj and Ustad Zakir Hussain (U. Liyaqat Hussain on sarangi). I sat 6 feet from Zakriji. It was amazing.
