Rabbit Snaring 2nd Check and Success with the Modified Fisherman's Snare

Two more rabbits on the second check of 8 snares. Not just any snares, but my new way of setting the fisherman's snare after several modifications made with the suggestions of a few different people. Now we have a system that will reduce breakages of the 22 gauge brass wire that we have to use here on the Island of Newfoundland. Looking forward to getting more snow and getting the portable snare pens out using the modified fisherman's snare.

That's pretty cool Charlie. I gotta hand it to you for reviving this tried and true method. I got enough rabbits but I could try it out for a fresh one. I saw that done when I was a kid. This old guy used much the same thing. I just passed it off.

I need to walk a lot more truth be known LOL. Thanks for the kind words my friend and I have two new mods for tomorrow. If people are not re-evaluating how they set snares now here with the 22 gauge brass wire, they must be having far less breakages then I experienced this fall.

I think I originally started watching your channel because of your snowmobile videos. Now you've got me thinking about getting into trapping rabbits. One pile of them over my way. Thanks for putting this together, nice video

I can't wait to try that system out. I was out today checking snares and I finally caught one - first of 2023 and first of this season. I was so excited I forgot I had a trail cam on that snare! I'll have to remember to get it tomorrow.

@@NLGhostWolf I don't believe so. There appears to be alot of rabbits. I had one snare break and another was ripped out of the ground completely. Also. I'm seeing a lot of food around, from lack of high snow and the abundance of downed trees from the hurricane. The hare just aren't hungry enough to fall for snare boxes.

Working out great! Hammer idea is genius! the ground is pretty well frozen here too, I might try a smaller hammer with a piece of rebar or a metal rod attached to it on a string..so you can tap it in with multiple blows and the then pull it out by hauling on the string. Just waiting for snow here! Ain't got a rabbit yet this season 😆 Happy snaring!

Sounds great! It's been a crazy year, I can go snowmobiling just 1 km behind the house. Once you get up on the high ground there is plenty of snow. But tonight, we are getting more rain. I hate trailering the ski-doo

Good catch there Charlie , it seems the line takes the shock out of the wire ,,I bet you will get a lot less brake offs..I got a fire stick for Christmas and you videos are amazingly better on the big screen than the laptop..can't wait for your skidoo videos :)..no snow here in NS

Ed, I can go for a ski-doo ride now, Only got to go about 1 km behind the house to the top of the first hill, they are snowmobiling in from there and in the hills there is over 20 feet of snow.

Same run? Yes by. Do you find the brass kinks are easier to fix than stainless? Another great video. The visual of the rope twisted it perfect. You can really understand how they break free. Cool!

no, a hard kink and the wire is done, So far no kinks just bends that I was able to straighten out. Yes, I counted 7 twists in the rope but there might have been more before I moved the rabbit.

What if you used a wire trout leader swivel instead of a toggle thoes leaders are strong

That should work too, The beauty of these mods, is that anyone can do it and add or remove mods as needed to suit their needs. Two new mods coming in todays video.
