Raccoon showed to take split ear’s babies early in the morning. Split ear had seconds to dart away from her nest, leaving babies alone. Fortunately, raccoon couldn’t reach the babies and left after several fruitless attempts. Split ear returned several minutes later.
This is our first raccoon attack on squirrel nests since December last year. Fortunately, we’ve lost no squirrels to raccoons in 3 years. Predator baffles work!

Yes, I so glad! The baby are safely.... raccoon are worst animal mess with something that they nit suppose mess with the momma nest....... safely are good!!! Raccoon can be smart, but always outsmart them... they might be mad.. oh well!

oh no. Raccoon? bad bad raccoon. Go away! By the way, I love the LIVE stream of Split Ear and Valentine’s babies. They are so adorable. I saw Valentine giving a bath to her 3 cubs this morning The little ones are growing so fast.

The tunnel is a brilliant idea. I have 2 squirrel "apartments" under construction, both with protective tunnels which have multiple exits. Thank you for the great idea.

That was scary, thank goodness for the tunnel, i did not know that raccoons would attack a squirrels nest.

Oh no! Poor babies! I’m sick of those greedy raccoons intruding on the precious little babies nest! What a jerk that raccoon is! Would an alarm or motion light scare it off? It’s only a matter of time before something bad happens! 😥

I haven’t tried these boxes myself but JCs Wildlife squirrel nesting boxes on Amazon look pretty decent. We make our boxes in house :)

Mom needs to sink those sharp incisors into Mr. Raccoon's hand and teach him a lesson. You don't go poking you paws in holes when you don't know what's in them!

I think you need to direct the raccoon towards your garbage cans and away from the nesting boxes.

We had squirrel feeders under this squirrel nestbox, raccoons loved that. We removed the feeders hoping to deter raccoons. It worked in the sense that we don’t see raccoons as often. But they have good memory, they will keep coming back every couple of months hoping to catch a squirrel… nothing we can do now

Wow that was a close call. Thanks for building the boxes so well. Did the group of squirrels born last year get a raccoon baffle over their nest? You would think with all those birdfeeders the racoons would eat at the feeders and leave the babies alone

Not yet. Too afraid to disturb their nest now. We will install a baffle this summer, when squirrels leave the nest for their summer nests. Btw, their nest 6 is in a relatively safe place: tall dry tree with only one trunk leading up that raccoon can use and multiple thin side branches for squirrel escape routes. They are safe as long as they stick together and listen diligently for any raccoon noises

Boy it really tried to find a weakness to the box. I have multiple squirrels which have injuries right now 😭.

Raccoon inflicted injuries can be brutal. Someone told us about an unfortunate squirrel trapped in a raccoon trap overnight. They found this squirrel in the morning badly injured by raccoons trying to get it out

Stuff of nightmares 😱. Not since the Aliens film with the remote camera footage have I seen something so scary! That clawed paw! Maybe install a sentry gun next time ( this is a joke. Not advocating Racoon violence. It's just going about it's business. Well done Squirrel mum for bravely trying to draw it away 👍 )

So where are those babies now? Did they move from your backyard?

Mom has moved them to another nestbox 4 in our front yard, and they’ve grown up into healthy squirrels. They’ve returned to this nestbox 1 in June of this year, spending several nights with their mom before moving on elsewhere. We suspect that two younger females that now live in nestbox 4 are these daughters of split ear squirrel

Squirrel had acute hearing and knew whatever was coming was bigger than her. Better to flee and maybe even hope the predator notices and hunts you out in the open as opposed to wait for it to show up and have no real way to fight it.

why is the mother run away? no fight for her babys?

Our guess is that she has no chances against big predators. We did see a different behavior from this squirrel mother 2 years ago, in a similar situation with a cat, twice. She would lure the cat away. Either she reacts differently to raccoons and cats, or she has found that the nest is actually safe from invaders, or she grew older and is more worried about herself. We don’t know…

It seems maybe to be the best way to deal, otherwise she would fill in empty space where the raccoon paw was reaching into. Also, if she was in nest, a lot of commotion would go on and babies could get thrown about and worse, grabbed by paw
