The vertical urban landscapes we are familiar with today were in fact enabled by an engineering and construction rivalry between two of America’s largest cities, that stretches back almost 130 years. For more by The B1M subscribe now - ow.ly/GxW7y

Nyc and Chicago are by far the dominant concrete jungles, but one city that’s always forgotten about is Philadelphia. It doesn’t have high rises scattered all over the city but I find the density and concentration of the supertalls there like the Comcast center, CITC, and liberty place buildings beautiful. The city is so dense and has some amazing skyscrapers that gleam in the light and is so underrated

I've been to both. Manhattan is better than Chicago. The people are much nicer not like the media portrays & the crime is not as bad in New York like Chicago. In Chicago the people are rude as I have experienced first hand as i have experienced first hand and the crime is bad. I have been there to the loop, West side, Northside and South side. I didn't feel safe going there. Yes the crime is not as bad in the loop but it's not unheard of. I would never take my family to a place like Chicago because the people are rude, the crime is bad and it is horrible. The people in New York also don't pay much attention to what happens in Chicago. Chicago on the other hand always looks for any type of attention. Yes they are proud which is fine but they show hatred for other cities. That's one of the reasons why I would rather visit other cities than chicago. Shouldn't Chicago be worried about their own problems than worrying about other cities?

I've been to Chicago and NYC. Chicago gets a bad rap because its has some slums far from the center of the city that have high crime. No tourists go to those slums. There is nothing to do there. As long as you stay in the city, there is little crime and I dare say less than NYC where there is crime everywhere. Yes, the crime in NYC is not as bad as it was in the 70's and 80's, but you still have to be somewhat careful and watch over your shoulder in NYC. Chicago is far more laid back and the people aren't paranoid like they are in NYC. Chicago is also a lot cleaner and beautifully landscaped with flower beds everywhere. The garbage in Chicago is kept in alleyways, unlike NYC where garbage cans are put in the front of the buildings and on a hot summer day the stench of cooking garbage is enough to make you puke. This brings out the rats and roaches and bed bugs in NYC. Chicago's subways are also a lot cleaner than NYC's. Look up rats in the NYC subway and there are videos of rats everywhere. In NYC, in the wintertime they let the snow pile up in mountains. In Chicago they instantly go out and start plowing the snow. I was in Chicago one February when the city had one of the largest snowstorms in history, all day and night, there were people plowing the snow. In NYC, we had a large snowstorm a few years ago and the outer boroughs were stuck in snow for weeks. There was no mail delivery and cars couldn't get through the streets. I find Chicago much more concerned about its citizens than NYC. Let me take that back, NYC is concerned about well-to-do Manhattanites, but the working classes in the outer boroughs can basically fend for themselves. And the towers in Chicago Look better and are better placed. NY they just looked all jumbled up in a mess. Plus Chicago has the beautiful Lake and beaches and River walk

Chicago - hands down!! There's something about the way the skyline envelopes you. Especially when you're driving into downtown. It's just the combination of Lake Shore Drive, the blue expanse of Lake Michigan, and the sun that pours in. Michigan Ave in the spring is just beautiful. Additionally, Chicago is just so much cleaner. Logistically, it was also planned out to be more efficient. Although Rahm has been such a disappointment as mayor, I think Chicago is still so beautiful. I know that other midwestern towns and states don't consider Chicago as part of the midwest, but I think it's still the city of big shoulders. It's the city that works. New York is also wonderful, and the skyline is definitely magnificent, but I prefer the quiet elegance of Chicago's skyline. Thank you for making your videos. They're wonderful!!

Chicagoans keep thinking they invented the skyscraper when it was an architect from Massachusetts William Baron Jenney who built the first skyscraper the Home Insurance building. I do research and know my facts. Massachusetts architect William LeBaron Jenney created the Home Insurance building for the New York Home Insurance Company's headquarters in Chicago. A Chicagoan architect born in Chicago would have had to have built the first skyscraper in order to be considered invented by the city of Chicago which is not true because thats not a fact it was an architect from another place. The Home Insurance building the first skyscraper was owned by the New York Home Insurance company and created by William LeBaron Jenney a Massachusetts architect these are just facts that you didn't know about.

Mr Tank I hate seeing comments like this. Innocent people brainwashed by the so-called news. Chicago, as a whole, is NOT crime infested AT ALL. The violence is pretty much confined in its entirely within a handful of neighborhoods on the South and West sides of the city. Aside from those areas (most big cities have dangerous areas like it, just to a lesser extent) Chicago is not really dangerous at all, and it certainly isn't the warzone that the media makes it look like it is.

There are just a few bad eggs that exploit economically depressed areas. Also worth noting that in the U.S. Chicago isn't even in the top 20 cities in crimes per capita.

@@robertpreskop4425 I've been to both.

Great video. The ones covering the historical narrative of this field are always a delightful treat. I was wondering if maybe for a future video, you could cover the topic of major historic pioneers in the field whose contributions pretty much revolutionised how things were approached. More specifically, the ones that are known as the fathers of their respective fields. Like Fazlur Rahman Khan, who's considered the "father of tubular designs" for high rise buildings, Karl von Terzaghi as the "father of soil mechanics", and so on...

Some modern buildings can be very creative though, and sometimes built with curves and angles that you'd think could never be done, there are many in different cities around the world that can be very impressive. Not all new buildings are like glass boxes. But I do also love some of the old buildings in NYC and Chicago, they had some nice class about them, as you said like cathedrals and churches. The worst period of ugly buildings in the last 100 years that I can think of were often built 1960s-1980s. During that time period all around the world were some of the ugliest buildings ever built, im not even a fan of the Sears Tower design, and even worse was the old twin towers, no disrespect to the whole 9/11 thing, but they were ugly buildings to look at. The new World Trade building is an improvement to me, but not one of my favorite buildings in NYC.
@supermilkchan123
@supermilkchan123 5 жыл бұрын
I mean yeah they're nice, but constructing a building with all that ornamentation cost more than a simple glass box would. And modern buildings are more than just the facade, its all about maximizing the interior space. Those old buildings are nice, but i wouldn't want to work in one, once you get past the main lobby its quite bleak. I'd rather live/work in a space with floor to ceiling windows and sweeping views than a historic building with minimal natural light, cramped interior, and views blocked by another building.
