I heard a story about an SR71 asking ATC for clearance to 80,000 feet. The controller said if you can get to 80,000, you got all the clearance you want. The SR71 replied roger, commencing descent to 80,000.

Combined thrust was 50,000l lbs dry and 68000 on reheat...just ONE GE9X on a 777 produces nearly twice the SR's combined reheated power. It's all aerodynamics and weight not just power.

Speed doesn't produce g forces. It's the _acceleration_ (change of speed and/or direction) that does that. The Blackbird's thrust/weight ratio at maximum take-off weight was only 0.4, which is much less than that of most fighters.

I think their minds were probably blown enough by the progress they saw before they passed. They were born when most houses didn't have electricity, and a few years before the telephone was invented. In 1903 they did powered flight on something so flimsy and slow, and yet by the time Orville passed away in 1948, a huge complicated aircraft had dropped a nuke on a city on the other side of the world, and people were getting used to crossing continents in airliners. Also the year of Orville's passing, a young chap called Neil Armstrong was studying aeronautical engineering. Huge change in one person's lifetime. Seeing an SR71 in action? I reckon the medics would be called to retrieve his jaw from the floor.

Fun recreation video! Takeoffs were done with less than half fuel to reduce takeoff roll. A full refuel once airborne limited it's altitude for a few hours until weight loss allowed it to reach target cruise altitude. Sad knowing I'll never see, hear, or feel another SR-71 take off or fly-by. We'd all leave the hanger during work to watch any known SR-71 activity. We were at the end of the runway typically favoring takeoffs.
