I love having an emergency fund for myself. It truly does help you sleep better at night. Also, it seems like the moment I had a fully-funded emergency fund, emergencies suddenly stopped happening to me!

We keep our Emergency Fund in shoe boxes, 10,000 of mixed bills per box and have worked our way up to a year's worth of the 4 walls. We fend off most emergencies by keeping sinking funds for car maintenance, appliance replacement, replacing the roof, septic clean out, car replacement fund, etc. Last year we had to replace all of our kitchen appliances (dish washer, microwave, the stove and refrigerator) as well as the dryer and the water heater. the only thing that fell short was the water heater. The emergency fund wasn't touched. Who knew that water heaters had more than doubled in the last 20 years. Well that envelope has a new max amount on it. When a given envelope hit's its max the funding for that envelop moves to increasing the emergency fund.

Best tip: Separate your money. If it's all in one place you'll spend it. Keep it separate and keep it in there for emergencies only!

Great tips!! Glad to know that we are already doing most of them! One thing that we really learned is determining how much of an emergency something is. Meaning our AC went out and we asked can it be fixed temporarily while we saved for a new unit? So, they were able to fix it for the season while we saved for the new unit and didn't have to touch our emergency fund. Similarly, we look ahead at things that could happen. We knew our water heater was reaching the time of typical life, so we planned for it and created a sinking fund to replace it. Our EF is too valuable and we don't want to touch unless we REALLY have to.

I am beginning my emergency fund and am saving any change I receive when I purchase items as well as $ I save using coupons. I recently bought $25.61 worth of cat food for $1.38 using coupons as well as 40 pounds of free cat litter so that $ saved went into the emergency fund It is a game and a fun one which will lead to financial security

Great tips. I also think sinking funds help keep the ffef in tack. I just spent $1100 on my car this week, but with my car repair sinking fund and new car fund I was able to pay for the repair and not dip into my emergency fund. :)

You make sense as usual. We're a little nuts I guess and do ours differently. Ours is in regular checking account, but we don't count it as part of that in our checkbook. Current amount of emergency fund is automatically subtracted and noted in a side bar. Pretend it's not there until an emergency comes up, which usually seems to be a major car repair. (thejenternet's comment about sinking fund for repairs is a great idea. We need to work on that.) We go by "our balance" - sans the emergency fund - and only refer to our actual bank total in order to make sure everything balances. Admittedly probably not the best method for most people, but it's been working for us.

When you have to use your emergency fund, how do you replenish it? Do you pull out all the stops and immediately use all your extra money to replenish it, or would you just contribute a fixed amount every month (say $50-100) to soften those blows?

I'm not in America and trying to work out 3-6m of expenses when we have a completely different and quite generous social welfare system. I'm also having logger heads with our bank as they will only let us pay %5 extra a month on our repayments without incurring fees. Sucks!
@munhl
@munhl 7 жыл бұрын
How long does a typical claim for social welfare take to process, before you receive it? You have to apply for it, it has to be processed, usually there will be some kind of backlog, then they communicate a decision to you, if successful then you will receive the money. If you leave some vital detail out, or they need to verify something with you etc the process will take longer. Therefore you need an emergency fund that 'bridges the gap' between the emergency and when you will eventually receive the social welfare. You should really be behaving as if there is no social welfare and save accordingly. Obviously claim for what you are entitled to and have paid taxes for, but don't rely on it coming to your aid immediately. Then, if and when you do receive social welfare it's a bonus!

What is the best type of account to keep the emergency fund in? Regular Savings account or something more like a money market account?
@palomanegra8545
@palomanegra8545 5 жыл бұрын
Money market account has higher interest rate to boost your savings income but not by much, double check with your bank. Some mm accounts have penalties for withdrawing your money within a certain time frame. You need your emergency fund accessible with no penalties. Just practice some self control and if you feel the need for seperate savings, do it. A bank that is a federal credit union is typically better than a big corporate bank as well, better return on your savings and better customer service.

Pretty much what Mariana said. Once you hit steps 4,5, and 6 you can back off on your intensity a bit. Invest 15% for retirement, save/invest for kids education and pay off you house as quick as you can. I'm done the baby steps and I keep about 15-20 in savings for what I call my once a year big expense... like a few grand for a vacation or like this year, re-doing a bathroom that was out of date 20 years ago.

stephkan20 I bank with a credit union and am on Baby Step 3. In my regular regular, everyday account the checking account pays my bills and I have my $1000 emergency fund in that savings account for easy access should there be an emergency. For my 3-6 months I still have it at the same credit union but in a completely separate account that way I can transfer money from my regular account to my 3-6 months account when we budget. So if we budget $250 dollars to go to our 3-6 months, I just hop online and transfer it directly to my other account. I just don't carry the debit card that is attached to it and pretend it's not there.

I don't know what Rachel or Dave would say but if you are on BS4 then it's probably not wise to stop investing just try to replenish as fast as you can. That being said if you are on BS5 or BS6 then I would recommend stop saving to kids school fund or paying extra to the mortgage and just focus on building up your emergency fund again. Then within hopefully a month or 2 you will be fully funded again and just go back to the baby step you were on. But it's whatever you feel comfortable with.
@drewpierpont3361
@drewpierpont3361 6 жыл бұрын
If you don't have a 3-6 month emergency fund, then you are, according to Dave and Rachel, NOT in BS4,5 or 6. You are in BS3. You should not be contributing to retirement or other investments, nor have any debt except your house payment.

@partychefamanda4007
@partychefamanda4007 7 жыл бұрын
JD Williams, I'm hoping I understand your question correctly. If you already have $1000 saved up for your Baby Step 1 and have all your debts paid off (excluding a mortgage) in Baby Step 2 then you're ready for Baby Step 3 which is 3-6 months of expenses, not income. In theory, should an emergency arise like job loss you'd have what you need to get by for 3-6 months depending on how much you've built up. So no cable, Netflix, Hulu,, eating out, movies, etc. Only the necessities. I hope that clarifies it for you.

If you think having a kid will increase the likelihood for emergencies, sure. Most people would think that. Your monthly expenses will certainly be higher, so it follows that 3-6 months of expenses with a baby would be higher than without.
