Hugs you and your dad have been a huge blessing to our lil family! We immigrated from México to Canada 4 years ago with 800 CAD. We had a job right away and started living the life we dreamed of since in Mexico we went to sleep hungry a lot of times and our income was not always enough for groceries we were used to spend everything we had on food! But when we arrived in Canada and got out first paycheque we thought we had a lot of money! So we spend and after 2 years we qualified for a mortgage so we got it ;-) but last year we needed to upgrade our house since we have 3 lil children:-) we needed a bigger down payment and we had almost enough to pay for it but we ended up borrowing some. 3 months ago I realized we had 5500 in debt :’-( Now we got our GOK fund :-) and we are down to 2800 we hope to be starting baby step 3 by the end of March :-) thank you God bless you!

Is your emergency fund part of the savings budget and what's the recommended amount for EF only?
@rosebud7105
@rosebud7105 6 жыл бұрын
EF is different bc the amount is different for everyone. If it's a Baby EF it's $500 or $1K (depending on your income). If it's a Fully Funded EF then it's 3-6 months of your monthly expenses ONLY. (Not 3-6 months of your income)
@vickieclark5931
@vickieclark5931 6 жыл бұрын
10-15% is more for the savings of the future like a retirement fund. That's an ongoing savings for the rest of your life. If your working on your EF then you want to go more intensely on getting it funded. So you should be putting more than 15% on that if you can. Unless your on baby step 2, then you should have just $1000 in the EF & then you want to throw everything on your debt that you can. Once your out of debt except your mortgage, and have a 3-6 month emergency fund. Then 15% is supposed to go to investments like 401K or Roth.

1st thing paid is health insurance, then tithe, then savings/investments, then we are left with $20k to support our family of 5. Our percentages are nowhere near the recommended amounts (except tithing). Find what works for you.

Rachel, I love your videos! I have a question. Right now our childcare costs the same as our rent! How do we budget with two major line items taking up 60%? It feels so impossible to make savings progress. We live in a very expensive area and are unwilling to move because it would require an hour each way commute and with young kids that isn't worth it to us. It would be great if you could do percentages for young families! Thanks!!

If I'm not mistaken, these guidelines are for after you are out of debt...definitely passed Step 2 as you wouldn't be saving or having the recreation in your budget if still in debt, possibly not the personal and clothing either if you're intense and gazelle-like 🤔...am I wrong?

You got grief on the last video of this kind because the amounts didn't create a zero based budget, your food category was half of charity (and at 145, unrealistic for most single people, let alone taking kids into account. I love listening to money advice, but that video needed a lot more work. Love your enthusiasm!

Hi Rachel I am a big fan. I have a question for you. I don't belong to any church or anything but I have a mother in law that lives in another country which my husband and I send her money every month. Can that count as giving the 10% sometimes it ends up being more than 10% that we send her?
@newcreation19
@newcreation19 6 жыл бұрын
Nowhere did she even imply that the giving was to a church. Also you don't *have* to do anything, so asking what you *can* count it as makes me cringe. Your money, your rules, budget it as you please.

3 years ago you told us to spend 5% on food and we told you that’s not realistic. We weren’t hating you. We were telling you feeding a family on 5% of your income was unrealistic. What percent of your monthly income do you spend on grocery and household items? We spend a lot closer to 10% than 5%....

We have no children, pinch as much as we can, & spend about 16% on food. I keep working to cut, but it's very difficult to imagine cutting any more unless we drive an hour for groceries, which isn't feasible.

Interesting: If you add up the percentages she gives you, the minimum recommended percentage of each category adds up to 100% of your money, and the maximum recommended percentage of each category adds up to 160% of your money. If any category is near the higher end of the range she recommends, other categories have to be driven well below the range she recommends. This is illustrative of the challenge of budgeting. As an FPU instructor, we need to help our FPU class members see where they can carve out space within a finite income to meet the needs of a family. This gets tough when a family with significant home and car debt has to meet other family obligations.

For anyone implementing this advice, note that the minimums add up to 100%, so you’ll need to go under the minimum to balance your budget if you go over the minimum in even one category. And don’t forget that childcare might make you lower these percentages even more.
