Did not really understand The wonder of Lea Salonga until recent reaction videos. Happy and sad about that because that is a lot of time off my radar. I consider myself a fan of Broadway, my kids grew up on Mulan and Aladdin, 😐 I am thankful that I get to discover all of these treasures of her art and beauty now. Thanks for posting this one!

Rachelle Ann Go is from the Philippines as well. The latter part of her career, she’s been doing Broadway show, but she started out as a pop singer.

I have to say, I really love this reaction video. I've already watched it 4x! Rachelle Ann and Lea were allowed/encouraged to make it their own and not just be doing the song as it was in the show. (It's already different - the verses are split up differently and in the show all the bar girls sing in a couple of parts.) Lea mentioned somewhere (in print, I think) that she didn't sing her part as the character of Kim here: an innocent 17-year-old Vietnamese girl about to sell herself for the first time. This is the 25th anniversary of MISS SAIGON and Lea is 43 years old here. Yes, she does look amazing, but that's a bit of a stretch. However, the younger Lea clip that you use as a comparison of her vibrato is from the Manila production of MISS SAIGON in 2000 when she was 29 years old. There I think she is still passable for a teenager! Just a few recommendations for Lea reactions: --Lea with the US Military Academy Cadet Glee Club singing "Via Dolorosa" in 2004/2005. Most Filipino singers of the last 20-30 years consider Regine an inspiration (a la Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey). This collab was part of Regine's birthday fundraising concert. Lea recorded her part first and then Regine recorded hers after.

You have to make note of the fact that this was a celebration performance and therefore both Lea and Rachelle Ann sang the song with some freedom to sing some parts of it in a different way than it should have been sung during the play.

i'm learning from you. thank you. ☺️ just a little more info, rachelle ann go is also a pop ballad power vocalist. lea, as you know, is really more on a theatrical singing. it's a balance of pop and theater on this one - as you've said, they were sharing their different styles of singing. it is beautiful. 💜

I'm pretty sure Rachelle Ann Go has never played Kim in MISS SAIGON. Rachelle Ann Go played Gigi (the bar girl who is crowned Miss Saigon) in both the London and Broadway revivals.

Lea is the original lead of that musical and she uses the original version of that song. Rachelle on the other hand started as a pop star. They were given the freedom to portray/sing that song their way. I hope you can react to her version the song Burn in her Uk concert wearing blue.

This isn’t a theater performance, more just a show. You need to take into consideration the venue, and the reason they are together. But I like that you urged your audience to see these two live. I’ve been extremely privileged to see many shows live in London and New York, including an 18yr old Lea. At the end of the day, there are so many of these “vocal coach reviews Lea and….”, so many saying similar, or even critiquing Lea, who is simply a master. Again at least least you discuss eras and what’s you think is current versus 90s. I prefer late 80s and 90s shows, my first first ever shows, and I had no idea how lucky we were.

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach I get that, you are helping folks that want to be great singers, versus the multitude of fans. Very few theatrical stars blow me away, Lea did. Normally the grind of daily shows prevents their best. They compromise the mix of vocals to be able to manage the load. I was so lucky to see Les Mis and Miss Saigon in the 80s and 90s, as they were on my doorstep. I also traveled to NYC for work, so it was always a case of planning to enjoy the trip. Now I live in NC, and see a show maybe twice a year, I’m sad for that, as all my memories are from 10+ years ago. In London I even helped a friend who did event management, and got paid as a extra for events. So when I wasn’t paying for great shows, I was seeing amazing events. Including working Pavarotti in the Park, working the VIP area.

I guess Lea had to decide not to belt because they did shows night after night. It would be damaging to her voice if she did belt every single night. Later in her life when she could afford belting, were the times that she was relieved from those shows.

Interesting that Lea never performed the role of Gigi. She is amazing in this clip but this is the only clip of her singing Gigi! I love her and think they are AMAZING but...Thankfully Lea performed this song with Rachael Ann Go!

THE RWEASON WHY LEA DIDN'T BELTED IN THE 90'S, BECAUSE SHE WAS DOING IT THE THEATRE WHERE SHE DOES IT SEVERAL DAYS A WEEK, WHICH IS NOT HEALTHY TO BELT ALL THE TIME... Not unlike the recent video, which was just a "special", that's why she belted there and not in the 90's....

Hi Alex belting is not unhealthy for the voice when done with skill. Sorry but that is just misinformation spread by far too many vocal teachers. We belt from the moment we pop out of our monthers with a hearty scream and babies never lose their voices.

Too technical, not taking into conaideration the emotion that the artist was trying to convey that's why the choice of chest mix, head mix and belt for a particular line of a song which sometimes needa to express vulnerability, that's why sometimes in tends to show in their voice, not because of wrong technique but more of expression, pharasing and emphasis on consonants and vowels...
