As someone who has been sewing for a really long time it's true there are no 'rules' as such but there are certain ways of doing things that will help you get a better end result. There might be three or four perfectly acceptable ways of getting the same result though so there's that. Pressing your seams will ALWAYS give you a better result though, so maybe that's not so much a rule as a strongly worded guideline??? That said, I'm always impressed at how well Rachel's projects end up. :D

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your mentality towards sewing. As a perfectionist and someone who would beat myself up over absolutely everything, it's incredibly freeing to hear someone say I can just do something because it's fun and I enjoy it, even though it isn't perfect. Life is too hard already to find new things to beat yourself up over, and you are a great example of skill meeting self-compassion and not taking things too seriously! Sewing feels a lot lore accessible mow!

its not. its the velum. if its the underside of the head, then gills or pores- its called that way because it looks similar to gills. thats where the spores are released. more likely theodore means the velum- amanita is a species whose body at the youngest stage looks a bit like an egg- a closed round shape- the the stem and hat grow, rip apart the outer soft layer that stays at the bottom- the way to differentiate the toxic, deadly amanita verna, phalloides and ocreata from edible agaricus cametris ( they are the same family., but amanita have a velum. theres 2 types of velum, the types amanitas have is auniversal because its around the full shroom- and theres a partao velum that is only around the head of the shroom, that rips and usually hangs around the stem. (its called a ring or annulus. to annul is o end, so..) en.wikipedia. org /wiki/Veil_(mycology) en.wikipedia. org /wiki/Annulus_(mycology)

I have just had a similar realization! I am a newbie, I started sewing for real only this spring because I've always been so intimidated by it. My mom sews a lot and she makes it seem so complicated, and all the sewing I've ever done has been at school where I was graded and there was so much pressure and you needed to do everything The Right Way™ or you would fail. But then I suddenly, on a whim, (or maybe after watching a million of yours and Bernadette Banner's videos) I decided to sew a dress based on a very vague description I saw on Instagram. I didn't really have a pattern, I just experimented, and that made me realize that I can do whatever I want, however I want. Does it always turn out great or the way I want to? No. But like, it doesn't matter? There are no rules. I can experiment and try and see what happens. I'm learning so much, I'm having so much fun and I have sewn a pair of trousers that is literally one of my favourite garment that I own. I think your approach to sewing is really inspiring, and I love the mushroom sleeves so much!

When using an acrylic or fabric paint on cloth, a layer of gesso under the area you intend to paint on is great. It prevents the paint from seeping through the backside of the fabric, can prevent bleeding, and increases paint durability. It also stiffens the fabric a bit, which can be a downside. There are also great fabric mediums intended to be mixed with paint for craft purposes. The sleeves turned out so great, I love them!

An 1890s ghost somewhere: *crying "I'm so proud! Our daughter appreciates ✨The Sleeves ✨" Also, re: making mistakes in sewing is important: In my current project (1940s french knickers) I messed up and sewed the french seam all the way up on the wrong side. So now they open on the right instead of the left, and suddenly the awkward hopping to not fall over when putting them on is solved! Moral of the story, sometimes mistakes are Learning Experiences and sometimes the thing you learn is that your new way is better (and your bad balance is not symmetrical 😁)

The cream ruffle on the sleeves was definitely a good call, it evokes the frilly "gills" of the mushroom very nicely! I also feel you on that "press your seams!" stuff, because I always felt that the act of sewing them flattened everything out just fine, but it does make the actual sewing step so much smoother so I can see why it's such a "thing".

I love how you're so humble and honest about sewing, and how you acknowledge mistakes but also recognize what's good and what you did well. Because you're so honest about how you feel, and because you're not always trying to seem professional or perfect, i've realized that everyone can start sewing, everyone can make their own clothes etc; Of course you can't expect it to be perfect at first, but you can only improve. And having someone so inspiring, funny, and honest like you is soooo motivating. I've finally started sewing and making my own thing this year thank to your videos, when i finally understood that it doesn't have to be "perfect" or seem "professional" for me to be proud of my work and wear it proudly!
