The history of Shri Gopinath deity goes back to 5000 years ago and is connected to two other ancient deities Shri Madan Mohan ji and Shri Govinda ji.
After physical departure of Lord Krishna, His great-grandson Varjanabha, wanted to make Lord Krishna’s deity exactly resembling Him. For that he took guidance of Queen Uttara who had seen Lord personally. Several deities were made, but none could match all the features of Lord. Queen Uttara finally identified 3 deities which matched exactly to Lord Krishna’s body in portions.
Madan Mohan deity resembled the part of Lord’s body below the waist, Gopinath deity resembled the upper portion and Govinda ji deity resembled the Lotus face of Lord Krishna.

ABOUT THE TEMPLE AND GUARDIAN GOSWAMI
The deity of Lord Gopinath was originally installed by King Vajranabh at Vamshi Vat in Vrindavan, near the bank of river Yamuna. But with time, the deity was lost as the successor care takers were gone. During the era of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, once there was flood in river Yamuna. As the flood waters cut down the land near the bank, the beautiful deity of Gopinath ji was exposed out of the sand, under the old Banyan Tree (called Vamshi Vat). This deity was found by Shri Paramananda Bhattacharya, a disciple of Shri Gadadhar Pandit (one of the chief associates of Lord Chaitanya). Parmananda Bhattacharya in turn entrusted the deity for service to Madhu Pandit Goswami, another disciple of Shri Gadadhar Pandit.
In Goloka Vrindavan, Krishna has 8 main sakhis (called Ashta Sakhis) headed by Srimati Radha Rani. Each of them have many assistants, who help them is Krishna’s service and arranging pastimes between Radha and Krishna. Madhu Pandit Goswami is considered to be an incarnation of Mandali Sakhi, who assists one of the Ashta Sakhis, called Champaklata Sakhi. So, we can see how Lord makes arrangement to go into care of His intimate devotees. And hence, we must learn and follow instructions of the Goswamis of Vrindavan who actually knew how to please Lord Krishna and serve Him lovingly.

Initially Lord Gopinath was worshipped at Vamshi Vat and then was shifted to a magnificent temple in 1632 AD, which was built by Rana Ray Singh, the Prince of Bikaner. The temple is built up of Red sandstone and matches closely in style and dimensions to that of the old Madan Mohan Temple. Sadly, a major portion of the temple was destroyed during the attack of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. Due to this the original deities of Gopinathji, Shri Radhika and Ananga Manjari were secretly shifted to Jaipur alongwith the deities of few other prominent temples. The Pratibhu Vigrahas (replica deities) were established in 1748 AD, and the new temple was built in 1819 AD. Near the new temple, to the east is the samadhi of Shri Madhu Pandita Goswami and one must visit it seeking divine blessings.
SPECIAL LILA OF DEITIES
The altar of Lord Gopinath is bit different than regular altars of any Radha Krishna temple. And that is because, in His altar Srimati Radharani stands on His right instead of left side. And on the left we can see another deity of Shrimati Ananga Manjari.
The mystery behind this is as follows…..
Lord Balaram, the first expansion of Lord Krishna, serves Him in the three rasas - dasya, sakhya and vatsalya, that is, becoming Krishna’s personal paraphernalia, being his friend and affectionately looking after him as his elder brother. Further desiring to serve him in all the mellows of transcendental love, Lord Balaram expands as Srimati Ananga Manjari to serve Krishna in the most brilliant Madhurya rasa.

Ananga Manjari is the daughter of Sri Vrishabhanu Maharaj and Kirtida devi, and the younger sister of Vrindavaneshwari Srimati Radhika. In Sri Radha Krishna ganoddesh dipika, Srila Rupa Goswami has described that Srimati Ananga Manjari has a beautiful complexion like that of a springtime Ketaki flower and her silken attire is the color of a blue lotus. Being the dear younger sister of Srimati Radhika, she has a very exalted position in the pastimes of Radha Shyamsundar and is herself also engaged in amorous pastimes with Sri Krishna....
