Ronan named his ship after Caroline Kennedy - then a cute kid whose picture he saw in a newspaper. The Fortunes' record was just a happy coincidence! For more naustalgia, check out corneliusatloppers.wordpress.com/

I was on holiday on the Isle of Man with my parents and siblings at Easter 1964 when we saw Caroline North anchor off Ramsey. When we arrived back home in Liverpool the radio was always tuned to Caroline as it was the go to station to listen to.I’m glad that I lived through those days as the 60’s were a magical time to be alive.

Next March (2014) will be the 50th anniversary of the launch of Radio Caroline. It, and the other pirate radio ships, filled a demand for pop/rock music on the radio from people in Britain. The BBC had a monopoly on radio broadcasting in the UK, and it's "Light Programmne" (later Radio Two) had only a few hours of pop/rock each week. Had the Beeb launched Radio One in 1963 instead of 1967, there might not have been pirate radio ships or at least there would have been fewer of them.
@rogerbushell3996

The pop pirates were band from the air waves many years ago. The UK government at the time introduced BBC radio one as a substitute. This seems to me, a classic case of a governmental lack of understanding of what the people wanted . Seems to ring a bell in our modern day as well. Ding Ding Caroline the history of music will never die.

Yesterday I saw Caroline Kennedy on TV, for the first time ever. She's 54 now (I'm 59) and still cute. Also, her political views reflect my own. She's definitely a sweetheart. But I wonder if she ever KNEW that one of Britain's icons was named after her, when Ronan saw her picture (as a poppet) on the front of a newspaper?

Are you SURE about that? I can understand Auntie not being KEEN on it - it was of course USED by Radio Caroline (but not COMMISSIONED by them - it already existed - and the station's name was dreamed up by Ronan on a plane trip, when he saw a picture of Caroline Kennedy - then a kid - on his newspaper) - and the Fortunes' manager, Reg Calvert, was the guy who was shot by Oliver Smedley - but that was in '66. Thus I cannot see how Auntie could have JUSTIFIED "banning" the record when it came out. Then again, what do I know? I thought Plato was a Greek washing-up liquid...

Hmm. Of course, the Fortune's line-up changed a lot over the years, so the truth might have changed with it. However, it could be true. The record was "snapped up" by Ronan almost immediately after its release, so Auntie could well have banned it then - out of PIQUE. Bit unfair on the Fortunes if so - I mean, they had nothing to DO with Caroline and it's unlikely they got paid anything for them using it. On the other hand, Caroline had a large audience and their constant playing of it must have boosted sales. So maybe it was an ill wind. Either way, it still stands as a great Sixties sound!

One of my friends was on Caroline. He was the dj who did the broadcast of the marriage on board the ship. An Australian (not NZ as movie states) His name is Graham Webb now retired. Live on the Gold Coast Queensland. There were not a lot girls as mentioned on movie. They had to work in shifts. Also paid more than other pirates. Millions of listeners in only a few months. The UK government was furious as you know they were broadcasting outside in international waters. The Amigo was grounded in a storm and one of the guys on board was Webby as we call him and they were saved. The movie is entertainment mostly and has some history in it. Small studio you could hardly move in not like the movie with a huge studio. Graham was news director/DJ. Also another Australian on at one time was Keith Ashton DJ. He went to London as radio announcer later, for a while and was on visa only so he advertised for a wife so he could become citizen. No girl replied.

Great...happy days. Re the naming of Caroline. Ronan named the ship Caroline after seeing the wall photograph of President Kennedy sitting at his desk in the Oval Office busy at work and tugging at his sleeve is his 3 years old daughter Caroline. The President stops what he is doing and is looking down at Caroline with a broad smile on his face.Ronan was touched by this 3 years old girl causing the most powerful man in the world to happily drop everything he was doing to listen to her.

I'm pretty sure Caroline also broadcast on shortwave; during the mid-1960's (when I was a little boy), my parents and I found a shortwave transmission from a British offshore pirate here on the U.S. East Coast, and I seem to remember it was Radio Caroline. My parents wondered why there would be such a station; they thought the BBC would have a 24-hour pop/rock station. They would soon learn (they did some research) that it didn't, and wouldn't until 1967 after the pirates were "outlawed".

I recall very well. I was in the Military,having just arrived back to Britain from Cyprus where we were fighting 1960 Terrorists EOKA), I heard Caroline, loved it, wrote off for a Bumper Sticker which arrived PDQ, stuck it on my rear bumper, was driving through Shrewsbury when I was stopped by police and ORDERED to remove the RADIO CAROLINE Sticker from my Bumper, after having spent 3 years dicing with death in Cyprus, you can imagine my attitude to the police, I told them where to go, got back in my car and drove off. This was the Dictatorial Efforts the BBC and Brit Government went to to create a 'No Listener' effort. I was a Radio Freak those days and had played a good part in establishing a Turkish Free Radio in Cyprus BAYRAK, 6.8 mgs (still operating too) I had a good understanding of the legal aspects of radio but I felt sick that the BEEB would step so low as to act in the manner displayed.Terry Offord

It caused "problems" because of the BBC's monopoly over radio broadcasting, at the time. The British government just wanted to maintain control and commercial radio did not come about until 1973.

@@markg6860 Same attitude was present, when I was stationed in Singapore at RAF Seletar, I heard VHF Stereo radio for the first time, The Broadcast of POP music was from THAILAND would you believe, I had wondered about the radios and hi fi gear being sold in all the electronic stores those days, (In Singapore) 1956-1960, STEREO RADIO,VHF wow,Britain was still in the 2LO stages,cats whiskers, diode stuff.BBC ie GOVT ruled. It was many years before Britain offered VHF radio for the peasants.MONOPOLY was the name of the game those days.Early 60's, 208 MW Radio Luxembourg was the ONLY station available in UK for good POP music.Terry Offord

@@terryofford4977 Simply ... the BBC did not have or did not want to spend the money to replace their transmitters with something of obviously higher-quality ... VHF/FM. But ... they did not want anyone else doing that either, so we had to suffer an inferior product for so long. That, along with needle time restrictions kept us in the dark ages of radio.

Do you know what the song was that closed Radio Caroline North every night. I know the Fortunes opened the station every morning. The closing song was called Caroline but who did it?
