You can see how this film inspired the game DRIVER on the PS1. This car park scene is very similar to DRIVER the game when you have to show them what you can do in the multi-storey.

LOVE THIS SCENE!!! That crashing sound at 1:56, if ANYBODY played "Driver 1" would KNOW this crashing sound from that game!! In fact, there's PLENTY MORE I can tell you about this sound byte! It was used in MANY car chase movies of the 70s and 80s. So far, the following is all the titles I've actually found it in: 1. The French Connection (1971) 2. Vanishing Point (1971) 3. M*A*S*H (1972-1983) 4. The Poseidon Adventure (1972) 5. The Last American Hero (1973) 6. The Seven-Ups (1973) 7. 99 and 44/100% Dead (1974)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the film itself or not) 8. The Towering Inferno (1974) 9. Race With The Devil (1975) 10. The French Connection II (1975) 11. The Kansas City Massacre (1975) 12. Cannonball (1976) 13. Gator (1976) 14. Silver Streak (1976) 15. Smokey & the Bandit (1977)(heard in trailer but NOT the final film) 16. Wizards (1977) 17. The Driver (1978) 18. Hooper (1978) 19. The Hunter (1980)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the film itself or not) 20. Eyewitness (1981)(heard in trailer but NOT the final film) 21. Impulse (1984)(heard in trailer but NOT in the final film) 22. The Terminator (1984)(ONLY in the original mono mix) 23. Commando (1985)(This film here). 24. Mischief (1985) 25. Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986)(heard in trailer but NOT the final film) 26. Maximum Overdrive (1986)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the film itself or not) Of these 26 titles, 17. of them (including The Driver (1978)) are 20th Century Fox productions, which indicates to me that they created it. 12 of these titles (including The Driver (1978)) have this sound effects guy who went by the name of Theodore Soderberg, making me believe that it was his sound. However, Soderberg isn't the ONLY guy I believe was connected to it,. as there's probably another: Don J. Bassman, whose name appears in the credits of "The Kansas City Massacure", which utilized it 10 times! However, considering that nobody bothers to claim ownership of the sound byte, I simply took it upon myself to not only adopt it for my own sound effects library, but also to go ahead with utilizing it in my OWN movies, including my first full-length film, "Return of the Black Thrasher: The Movie" (2009)! I even have it as my default notification sound on my Android mobile phone! I swear to God that there's no better car crash sound effect than the sound byte I speak of. Oh, even now, I'm STILL looking for this sound byte in other movies. BTW, I subbed.

Hey, more word shall be spread about the crashing sound thanks to me! There's an article on Sound Effects Wiki about it: soundeffects.wikia.com/wiki/CAR_CRASH_HEAVY,_GLASS_SHATTER_AFTER_IMPACT_(20th_Century_Fox)#Audio_Samples Better yet, it's now available for download at Freesound dot org: freesound.org/people/77Pacer/sounds/425275/. The best part? I'M the one responsible for creating the Sound Effects Wiki Article AND making the sound effect available for download at Freesound! I managed to splice together 2 different recordings of the crashing sound to make the complete sound again! The first half of this edited version of the sound effect is the sound from Driver 1, while the second half is a fragment from the trailer of "The Seven-Ups" (1973). More word is spread around the internet because of my actions! Someday, when I enter the Movie Sound Effects Department, and I become the new owner of the original master of the crashing sound, I shall make it so it shall be heard in new movie releases for the first time since the 80s!! Who knows, I could be awarded a million bucks for this achievement!!

@John Hill Any time! I always update my list when I find it in other movies. So far, the newest film I found it in is "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" (1988). Better yet, I have recently utilized it in my latest full-length KZfaq movie, "Bonestyx's Return" as well!! As far as I know, I'm the only one who's keeping it alive. I vow one day to become the new copyright owner of the sound effect!! Sadly, my father passed away 6 months ago on Easter Sunday night this year. He battled with pancreatic cancer for 6 years, and he is truly missed. He was 61 years old when he passed, and September 4th would've been his 62nd Birthday. Someone wrote to tell me a "Merc" is a MERCURY - then called me a POSER! I "approved" the comment - and replied that the word he (it could ONLY have been a he) was struggling for was POSEUR. Then I pointed out that I am from BRITAIN - where a Merc is a MERCEDES!!! Then KZfaq's latest system (which is even CRAPPIER than their last) naused up and LOST both pieces!

@awd protege Not the four doors unfortunately however coupes and convertables yes. I do not think that is even a Mercedes colour if it was I have never seen it before and I have owned multiple W108 bodies, at one point I owned one from every year produced from 1965 to 1972. Mine were all wedding cars and I always brought really clean ones and once painted they owed me more than they were worth.

Good driver, maybe. Good car, definitely. I saw this movie when i was 12. It wasn't perfect, by any means, but O' Neal's performance definitely stuck with me.

He showed his skill in the first manoeuvres where he didn’t put a scratch on it, once they were convinced he started picking the car apart, you’d need to be inch perfect to take door handles off like that. If you watch the film Driver knew they were setting him up with the cops.

He's showing them his ability to maneuver the car in tight spaces including banging it up while still having a car that runs perfectly in a chase! He hasn't destroyed the car at all! What he destroyed was superficial!

Technical problems with this movie: (1) They used those giant Panavision cameras instead of the streamlined Arriflexes. (2) They used a brand new negative film stock that turned out to be a dud. (2) They believed that can shoot most of this with available light at nightime. End result: a very dark film.
