Radio Shack rise and fall and history video. This RadioShack Store dates all the way back to the 1920's. Sometimes referred to as The Shack or Radio Shack this company existed until 2017 until business started to decline and most stores were left abandoned. The retail downfall of radio shack isn't all that uncommon as the 2010's have been hard on retail stores. #RadioShack #Radio

Great video. I remember Radio Shack nostalgically as I worked there back in the 80s. Bought my first electronic 50 in 1 kit and learned about electronics. It was a great student summer job for the computer and electronic enthusiast like myself. Radio Shack, Blockbuster were popular back in the day. The free batterya month club was great back in the day. But in the 90s when internet came out all these parts could be ordered online and their business was in chronic decline. By 2005 they were in a death spiral they could not climb out of. To be fair so many retailers have collapsed due to the internet. They were just one of so many. But they were great back in the day.

Worked at RadioShack during their decline in 2013-2014. Was what it was, but met some good people. Thanks for the memories

I used to hit up Rat Shack for components, speakers and other parts. Once they went down the crapper, I went to Fry's. Now that Fry's is gone, it's impossible to get electronic components locally, especially on a weekend.

I wasn’t around when RadioShack was popular, but I’ll always be thankful for them being one of the few stores in my area that still carried PS2 controllers in the early 2010s when mine broke. Great video, greatly explained and well researched.

Radio Shack had all those odd things and specialty parts you couldn't get anywhere else local. I appreciate that thanks for checking out my videos!

One thing Radio Shack had was outdoor antennas. With cable, satellite, & Live TV Streaming Services going up in price, it is sometimes hard to find good outdoor antennas in stores to get local channels for free. Radio Shack was a good small electronic store.

I can tell you that getting replacement electric components to solder in since radio shacks here went out is a pain.

They sold me a sprint home phone service to get a discount on what I was there to buy. AT&T called me later to return the service. I forgot about how annoying they were filling out the receipts and up sales. Stopped going there around 2004 when I needed many cables when I was changing to HD TV and surround sound. Prices were astronomical and everything they sold looked like it was for professional DJ equipment. I was just updating up my modest TV room. If I bought all the cables from Radio Shack, they would've cost more than the DVD player/recorder.

Well the problem was these enthusiasts could buy all these small parts online where it's cheaper and much wider selection. Also these enthusiasts were a shrinking consumer group as we moved into the era of disposable electronics. Basically nobody built or fixed anything anymore.

Absolutely. There is now no place to get a part that you need on short notice. They also abandoned the audio enthusiast.

Way to go. Some of this stuff are rare parts you can't get anymore so you can sell them as specialty parts online. I worked at Radio Shack back in the 80s and it was a great experience. They simply couldn't adapt to the times but they're not the only casualty of the internet.

great video! 6:01 they re-badged that Tandy 1000 SX for Panasonic as they did for Digital. Besides cables, and computers, most of the copper wire products sold in the stores (Coax, Speaker cable, Hobby wire) were all made in house at Tandy Wire & Cable. Also if I recall, indoor & outdoor TV and CB/SW radio antennas at Antennacraft, I think they also made early speakers and raw speaker components. They also owned O'sullivan Industries who made most of the Audio Racks and Computer Furniture.

As of today the RS website has NO electronics or radios listed! So these recent RS radios may indeed be collectibles now.

Why hasn't anyone who has put together these videos about Radio Shack ever covered the merger with Allied Radio? In 1970 the Tandy Corporation took over Allied Radio and merged it together with Radio Shack. Radio Shack became Allied Radio Shack until the government stepped in and made them break it up by 1973. I remember going to the Allied Radio Shack store in Fort Wayne Indiana after the merger. They made the Allied Store there an Allied Radio Shack store. It's seems to be a really important part of the story which these videos always leave out.

A new story says the company that controlled the RS brand globally just bought the RS brand in the US. So bye bye to another US Brand. Unicomer Group of El Salavador. The U.S website is being refreshed so hopefully there will be new RS radios!
