A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal
You look so tired and unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent
This is my final fit, my final bellyache with
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please
Such a pretty house, such a pretty garden
No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises please (let me out of here)

This song was played at my uncle jays funeral. I love this song because it reminds me of him. When people ask me how he died, I tell them that he died of depression. He did not kill himself, his illness killed him. This song kind of sums up how I think his thought process could have been, this song helps me

THIS IS MY FINAL FIT, MY FINAL BELLYACHE... Because there is alot of emotion in it. This is no typical Lady Gaga/Miley Cyrus bs for the mainstream sheeple, where the main priority is to get as much money as possible by focussing on catchy tunes and lyrics that get stuck in your head instead of the love for music itself. This is art, real music alot of people can relate to but are afraid to talk about because we live in a world where alot of us have to hide our true feelings like sadness and depression. And I know what it's like, even your own family and friends can turn against you when you show your true feelings.
@KMWeir
@KMWeir 9 жыл бұрын
No one but the band members themselves can truly answer this, of course. I think much of it has to do with the spirits of the artists. Not only their spirit, but their soul, which is not the same thing. Our spirit, we are born with. It's our pure essence. Our soul is all of our experience. I believe their is some real sadness in Yorke. It's just my belief. I am an artist and my family is full of musicians and writers and I see emotions show through real well. The beauty of art is complete exposure amid complete closure.

I do believe this song is about suicide. At first, it's talking about all of life's troubles: a heart full of worthless things, a typical 9 to 5 job, being screwed over by the government, etc... Then he talks about putting an end to all of it; "a handshake of carbon monoxide" could mean suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning which would be achieved by running a car's engine and redirecting the exhaust back inside the car. After he kills himself, there will be "no alarms and no surprises." This, to me, means no more alarm clocks (or no alarming events), no more negative surprises of any kind, and he will finally be surrounded by his much sought after "silence." "This is my final fit, my final bellyache" signifies the end of his life. "Such a pretty house and such a pretty garden" describes the ideal way of living according to society. I feel it is what he has been working his whole life to achieve, but in the end he realizes it's just a false sense of happiness. The way his life must be to achieve this false happiness is so destructive and depressing that he, in turn, destroys himself. Kind of ironic, as with most things in society. The music played reminds me of a serene dream, or right before you fall asleep. I believe it is very fitting for the song, because it also reminds me of drifting off into eternal sleep / death. Overall, this is possibly my favorite Radiohead song. It's so beautiful in every way possible, even if the truth behind it can be ugly. Radiohead knows exactly how to put feelings and thoughts into words / music that can be so extremely relatable, it's almost frightening.

"Such a pretty house such a pretty garden" I think he was refering to "heaven" maybe thats what he sees in the otherlife. You now, like in the movies, when someone dies this is the typical scene. A small, peacefull house in the hill.

stancexpunks i think its about an old person dying, and looking back on his plain and boring life. Bruises that wont heal, final bellyache, may represent cancer. And the pretty house and pretty garden i think is his biggest achievement in his life: to have a beautiful house and garden. But at what cost? Carbon monoxide poisoning of the world etc.

I'm feeling it, really. And while I got my life fixed, I don't have anyone to vibe to Radiohead. It's okay, but just saying. I just remembered my dream of slowly dancing with a girl, sharing headphones, listening to a song, being... anywhere. By a lake. Living the moment with anything but embrace and the music we both understand. If you're reaching out because you're hurt, that's okay. I understand. Just keep moving forward, some things take time. And the song is all calm and yet about something dark, but it makes it seem like it's okay. Like in their final moments they weren't upset but happy and thinking about the world and observing their surroundings. It's beautiful, this song. The video is cool too. I grew up in a suburb in Europe, under mostly grey skies. For a long time that represented my whole reality. This album in particular told me there was more to life than the 9-5 suburban grind, and now I live in a sunnier part of the world. I'm fitter happier, and less productive. I love OK Computer. It taught me at a young age not to take a quiet life, a handshake and carbon monoxide. I'm sending lots of love to anybody who needs it, who is listening to this song, and hoping for better days.

It could be more... I dove into a soulless career, working 80 hours a week, and could finally afford the house of my dreams. I also loved gardening - it was my escape. Even then - with the good fortune so many of us never get, I felt such emptiness. There is no other way to describe it other than, "This is what I worked my ass off for, my privilege gave me access to achieve, and I am still empty inside." When I hear these words, all I can think is that materialism, while making you lucky and comfortable, will not save you.

I regret ever going on this trip, a part of me knew that shed get worse when i left. But i didnt wanna pass this oppertunty, i thought she would be fine for that one month i was going to be away. She wasnt, she got worse so quick. Just under 2 days she got so bad she couldnt even walk down the stairs of our house.
