So I got the RadioShack Golden Arrow buggies all cleaned up, fixed up and done up! One is remaining the way it is and in the Used shape as a piece of RC history, the other got refurbished, updated and modified to be a more modern version of what it was. In the midst of all of this I worked with Nostalgia RC to get reproduction decals created to spruce up the runner and make it look fantastic!!! Check them out and the first run of the modified one!
You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

Thank you very much!!! I am super happy with the way they turned out and with the new decals the runner looks fantastic! I was really happy with them and think it is too cool that with some cell phone pics and generic measurements he was able to create such great reproductions! I decided to keep the original all original as I like the slightly worn and used look. It give it some character and doesn't look like a restoration but a revival! The runner is great and other than softening up the rear shocks with a much lighter oil it runs great and I had a blast with it! I am super happy to have the best of both worlds now after all the years of wanting one!!!

They did but they were fairly slow and very low torque motors so they lacked some excitement. The suspension on them did not lend them going much faster than they did back then. They really filled a gap in between the toy store market and the hobby grade market and did that very well in both price and durability! I am super happy with them and very happy have them in my collection now after so many years of wanting one. I really need to put a much lighter oil in the rear end of the car, I built it with the yellow Tamiya oil that the shocks come with and it is to stiff and bouncy. I need to drop to a 10-15 weight oil to allow it to suck up the bumps more . It was either going to work well or bounce all over and it was the later for sure!

FYI you can strip the gears on the stock arrow this way but I used to go full speed then throw it in reverse and turn and it would be going backwards down the street. Then do it again and go forward without loosing speed. Probably the best memory I have as a kid.

LOL, not a snob, just not experienced with the mid tier stuff as much. I drooled over stuff like this as it was potentially obtainable for me whereas the higher end stuff was just dreams and fantasy at the time. It was certainly a "barrowed" design from the hopper family of cars. So much so the parts are interchangeable! It'll never be a great buggy but it doesn't have to be, it is part of my growing up and memories from back them drooling all over it in the store to making new ones now actually having it and being able to enjoy them. Good/bad, cheap/expensive... it doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it and can appreciate some part of it and have fun then it doesn't matter if it is a potato or a Porsche, just have fun! The tires on there are not on road ones, they are the Pro-Line Electrons whish are more a high bite clay track type of tire. New, more appropriate ones arrived this week and will be going on there! I did not buy originals as that was just going to be silly money but went with some others from Tamiya that are "close enough"!! I am still trying to find a reasonable slipper clutch disk and once that is in it will be ready for another rip around the track!

@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
it could be done but would take a lot of effort. The front shocks clip onto a steel post molded in the front shock towers. those would have to be modified or changed out and if anything goes wrong then you have to get a whole new chassis tub as the towers are made into it. I a sure with the proper tools and smarts you could engineer and aluminum or carbon fiber tower for it but I lack both the tools and some of the brains for all that!!

Yeah dealing with factory electronics can be a pain. These are sold old and glitchy sometimes it can be a real pain to get working well. If it doesn't want to play nice then a 1060 ESC and a cheap low profile servo are any easy way to get it going with any major mods. You just need to unsolder a few wires and get a Tamiya servo saver set and you are back in business. The bonus is you no longer have to run the AA batteries in it so it is lighter overall! Best of luck with it!!

@@AddamsPlayground I'd hesitated for a while because of the servo but it seems a lp would be a simple enough solution if I decide to go aftermarket..... I do still have a radio though so I kinda want to keep it original...

Thank you, I appreciate that! the servo I got off of amazon and if you search for "JX Servo PDI-4409MG" there should be multiple listings for it as well as other very similar. I just took my regular snips and clipped off the mounting tabs from the case and also too the strain relief off the wires coming out of the case but it then slid right into place and the U-shaped strap that held the original one in place will also hold this one down. You will need a servo saver for it as the output on the factory one is a square shaft and the new one is a 35 t spline. I used a stock Tamiya one as it stuck out the proper length to keep the toe correct.

Any idea on which bearing kit will fit the Golden Arrow the best?
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 10 ай бұрын
I am not sure for the stock wheels and gearbox, I have not upgraded those. For the upgraded one I used a Tamiya Grasshopper rear end and Hornet wheels and tires. The stock rear differentials are not super strong and the Grasshopper gears are rather bulletproof and the Wheels and tires were an easy swap. They will work even if you don't swap out the rear end, they will still fit up fine to the stock buggy.

Hi Adam, I've just subscribed, great content. The golden arrow was my first hobby grade like rc. Where did you get the tire replacements? Also, my golden arrow came with no sticker on the bumper. Thanks

Thank you and I am glad you are enjoying the channel. The tires I use are for the Tamiya hornet. The fronts are identical but the rears are little different but are pretty close. You can also use the hornet wheels front and rear as well, just know they do not come with the hardware to assemble them. They are a 3 piece wheel unlike the stock Golden Arrow ones. I am sure over the years they changed how the stickers were laid out so that may be an indicator of an early or late model of the buggy, I am not sure.

Hi Adam, just found your channel and I love it. I have a great condition Golden Arrow that I received for Christmas in 1988 and occasionally still play with because it's such a wonderful memory. I am however needing to replace the little plastic tube that holds up the car antenna and am coming up empty. Everything I find is too large to fit in the recessed hole. Is there a source for these that you recommend? Looking forward to following along to modify my car this year.

Well first welcome and thanks for stopping by and checking things out! As for the antenna tube the vast majority of them are a fairly standard size so I am wondering if the old tube did not snap off in the hole. That would make it so another will not go into the opening. I used a Tamiya antenna tube from a kit I had built but did not need the tube. I will take some measurements of the hole the tube goes in and the tube I used and will respond back here tomorrow! If for some reason I do not please email me and and remind me, I do get distracted but I will certainly try and remember tomorrow morning.

Wow, I never considered that the base of the tube could be broken off inside. Would explain a lot. I will check it out this evening with a dental pick. Thank you for that, I will post back with my findings.

@Addam's Playground Hello again Addam. After careful inspection if my car antenna I have determined that the base is thankfully not broken off. Just that the tubing I have is ever so slightly too large. This set home the realization that I just needed to purchase the proper tube online. I was able to track down some Tamiya antenna pipes for a reasonable price. I'm aware of being able to do away with it but I want the original look. Thank you for your response and for showing me in this video that it's not wildly absurd to by another car. Now I'm on the hunt for another to modify and build up. Can't wait to watch more of your content. Best Regards..

@@48thStateJayhawk Good to hear and the Tamiya ones should fit in there well. Keep an eye out for them as the come up fairly often on eBay. My tip is to be patient and watch multiple auctions for the as you can sometimes find ones that end up going for silly money and others that go for very little! It is very interesting to watch the auctions go all over the place honestly! I hope you get one and can have a fun runner and keep your old one in great shape!

@Addam's Playground , can't thank you enough for your help. I was able to get some Tamiya tubes on our favorite auction site and these fit right in. Perhaps years ago I tried replacing it with something else and have forgotten. My car is up and running again, such a fun time. Now watching for a decent runner to play with and modify. I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the wonderful and informative work.
