I love this version of black so much the fact that eddie gives mcready the stage fully to do his mind twisting black solo vs earlier live performances where eddie interupts almost, its like an older humbler vedder gives mcready the presidence to just obliterate and do what he does that touch on the shoulder is the nod. Where mcready goes during the black solos can only be described as spiritual

“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star, In somebody else’s sky, but why can’t it be mine?” I was too young to understand this lyric when this song came out but years later in my adulthood I feel every word.. It makes me appreciate the music of my generation even more.

@@EOgletree2 You & your Dad both have exquisite taste in music! Curious, are you male or female? The first time I heard BLACK over 30 years ago, I was mesmerized, addicted and in love with Eddie's voice! I have watched nearly hundreds / all PJ''s "Black" videos and I'm sure listened to it thousands of times since. I was hoping it would never end, by far the best version of “black” played live by them. Timing is perfect with all instruments, Eddie’s voice is solid, but McCreedy’s solo just shows the amount of pain and suffering he’s dealt with throughout his entire life, there few and far between, but any extended version of any song from either Mad Season, Pearl Jam, or Temple of the Dog, are all fucking incredible. The fact he plays those solos out the way he does in these songs goes to show the deep connection still felt to those songs and emotions tied to such a beautifully magnificently arranged set of notes that only McCreedy could give justice. One love brother, thank you for being the savage that you are, countless inspiration has been given to me from your music and how you dealt with the shit you’ve endured.

I am impressed how well Eddy's vocal chords held up after all these years of that raspy, distorted grunge style. Most of the guys from that era have no pipes left. Similar to the 80's head-screamers. Although I notice he cleverly avoided singing the most difficult notes and left it to the audience to do it for him. He also shows a lot less emotion when doing this song, but that makes sense given that he's now 30 years or so removed from whatever incident inspired him to write this song.

Eddie wrote this song about a high school girlfriend. Your whole comment is spot on though. Not alot of vocalists can maintain the voices over the years but, Eddie Vedder is one of the exceptions. Billy Ocean is another that comes to mind, and he started out in the late 70's.

It's what bands do if they had real talent to begin with and still give a damn. Nothing worse than seeing a thirty year old band that were sick of their set list twenty years ago but need a check to make a few payments. Many people dont take STYX seriously for some reason but they hit the stage and put on a rock show every show and have for 45 years. That's what professionals do. STYX are pros and Pearl Jam is the next generation doing the same.

5 minutes of Mike McCready and Matt Cameron simply owning that stage. Every part of that solo was spot on from the hand off at 4:14 from Eddie to Mike -to- the wind down at 6:24 leading right back into the "Black" riff at 6:53. As someone said in a different comment "a religious experience." I've followed this band from the 90's and they still can't disappoint. Amazing.
