Wondering how to check engine heads for cracks? Actually very easy to do, well except for all the cleaning.... For this I will be using CANTESCO P101S-A Red Visible Dye Penetrant and CANTESCO D101-A Dye Penetrant Standard Developer. I'm not using the official cleaner, just some brake cleaner. Finally after being sick over Christmas I'm working on cleaning the heads from Cousin's 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0L motor. After cleaning and looking at the heads I assumed they would be fine, but not quite!

MPI inspection is your best.....replace them for sure.

Great video Randy! Die Penetrant Inspection are only good for surface indications. Since you found the one crack with Dye Penetrant, there's a very good chance there are more cracks you can't see under the surface. To find those cracks, you need to take the heads to a machine shop that does Magnetic Particle Inspections. There, they have this machine where they actually magnetize the heads, dip the heads into a special solution, then shine a black light. If there are any additional cracks in the heads, they can't hide from the black light and they show up as bluish red hairline cracks usually. Magnetic Particle Inspection works only on steel parts or parts made of other ferrous alloys. If you had aluminum heads, the only other inspections in addition to Dye Penetrant would be Eddy Current and X-Ray.

Well in this case given everything else with the heads we are going to replace them.

I must admit, the head checker is awesome! Did you buy it as a kit? I am kinda scared to ask the price of the cleaner..LOL

I wanted to get the kit but they were sold out so I ended buying the separate cans, the cleaner was another $10 or so, they make smaller cans that you can get in a kit.
