Rafael Lovato Jr discusses how he managed to develop his jiu jitsu in near isolation as there were no high level instructors readily available to him in Oklahoma during the earlier days of his jiu jitsu career. He also discusses the importance of asking questions, using a journal, and setting goals to stay on track of your progress.

this was great to it made me pretty stoked because the section on where he explains the journal and taking comprehensive notes to develop your game is something I am already doing

I always thought that journals were kinda silly but I noticed (over time )those guys excelled in a very technical way and had a deeper understanding of the fine details of any given technique.

The Youngest American Black Belt at that time was Joe D'Arce from Renzo Gracie. He got his BB at 18 years old. The inventor of the D'Arce choke. "Joe D’Arce Joe D’Arce started training with the legendary Renzo Gracie at his New York City academy in 1997 and had the honor of being promoted to black belt in 2003. Through the years Joe competed in over a hundred submission grappling and Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) competitions winning many titles. Joe is a veteran of the Pancrase fighting organization in Japan most notably representing team Renzo Gracie in July of 2004 when they went head to head with team Pancrase. Joe is also well known for a technique known as the Darce choke which has become widely popular in both Jiu Jitsu and MMA competitions." Much HISPECT to RL Jr and Saulo!!! You guys represent BJJ to the fullest!

The few times he was at the dojo when I went he was cool as a cucumber and always took it easy on us. Sr. on the other hand was very high strung and kind of a jerk TBH. Used to take lessons from him but he expelled me because a marine recruiter showed up and pulled me out of class to talk to me. He thought it was disrespectful, though I dont disagree. It wasnt my fault as I tried to explain, those bastards showed up every where I was after I took the asvab.

Hit the wrong button and fucked my long ass comment up. Short story, I miss training with his dad. Used to train under him in high school in Edmond, Oklahoma between 2001 and 2003. Nobody had Jr on the ground game, but my buddy Jessie Livingston had him on the Vale Tudo. Miss those days, paying a nickle for a candy bar and walking to school uphill in the snow barefoot and fighting dinosaurs for my lunch...

trips me out how Rafael doesn't even really acknowledge, mention, & avoids his BJJ Instructor; Carlos Machado, he just skips it over it by saying yeah I received my black belt in 2004 then goes on to talk about the Rebeiro brothers... not to say that the Rebeiros are bad, but he doesn't give props to the one who taught him his fundamentals ..SMH

No bad blood. I was training under Carlos Machado in Dallas back in 1995-1996 and clearly remember Rafael and his dad (Rafael Sr). I think Rafael Jr was 12 or 13 years old. If there were bad blood between them, I'm pretty sure I would hear of it.

Looks like just an informal interview where Lovato is describing himself, not a scripted documentary where he is purporting to detail every person in his life that is important. Sounds like you're just trying to start shit for no reason.

Think he was just highlighting how much the Riberio brothers really helped him perfect his game. Kinda like a 1st love and a marriage. Machado was qoute-on-qoute "his 1st love" and the Riberio Brothers was qoute-on-qoute "his marriage". Its what perfected him, not what got him started.

Only those who burn the correct insense and light the correct candles can know the black belt level of BJJ..Otherwise they are purple forever only pretending to have reached the black AAAAAAAA Division level...My point is with enough $ and butt kiss anyone can get a black in this unregulated martial art..No shade on Raph just the whole belt thing is for suckers..Go with the best and funnest guys who have skill

Cole Tanner Difference is that in BJJ, if you’re a fake black belt, there’s no way to hide it other than to avoid rolling with anyone good.
