The frequent injuries he's sustained over the years it's going to put doubt in people's minds... But as they say, great champions always find a way and bounce back... even at 36 years young. definitely has at least 2 even maybe 3 years at the top I would say. I wouldn't rule him out that's for sure. Djokovic about the same, although he's a year younger so who knows. Only a handful of younger player's coming through, if that, and one's in their prime are edging closer, but they still way behind and can't topple at least 2 of the big three (Nadal, Djokovic) and probably never will. Big question mark over Federer now

I'm a little confused as to why you describe this match as one of the best matches ever. And it's not you alone. I've seen several pple say the same. I can mention three of their encounters in Roland Garros alone that's light years better than this. What about their awe inspiring clash at Us open final 2013? To be very honest this match pales in comparison to several of their encounters.

I wouldn’t put it over the 2013 match of course but it was definitely a terrific match. What I will say is this version of Nadal (minus foot injury) is a more complete version than that 2013 version. All that version of Nadal could do was spam forehands and great defense and Rocky esque heart and stamina. At 36, he still has the forehand and defense, but now he can serve and volley, play at the net, he can serve a little bigger now even. His tennis is more polished now and its a shame he never played this tennis before in his prime because even this diminished version of him, one more serious injury away from retirement, can still win Grand Slams.

True. After not playing for months, comes back, loses in Madrid and gets injured again in Rome. It seemed like there was no chance, yet in the bottom I still believed in him. How could we not, after all the times he had come back. After precisely last year's magic AO. And he went to RG and won. Gave one of the best performances he's ever given on clay in this wonderful match against the magnificent Djokovic. Then we were up to what looked like one of the greatest matches of all time with Zverev (sad outcome), and completely destroyed Ruud in the final. How does he do it, I don't know. But he always does.

Being in Australia, we are not able to watch live. Knowing how well Djokovic was playing in previous matches and Nadal being hampered by injuries, I was quite certain that Nadal will face a huge challenge. Next morning, I avoided checking any sports news or friends messages, i didn’t want to be disappointed with Djokovic coming on top again this year. However, I was also secretly hoping for a miracle. At the end of the day, I finally found the courage to look at general sports stat to indirectly infer the score. 😅 That’s when google happen to return the big news! I knew then he was not going to lose, again, to Novak at the French Open. There was NO WAY Rafa would lose again. This is Rafa's Kingdom and he wanted the Crown back in his hands. After his win over FAA, I definitely knew he would not lose to Novak. If you look at these highlights, Nadal is tuned into this match. He was on top of his game. Nek Ant sometimes even if the match is being shown live I’m too nervous to watch! It’s better than I could have dreamed of so far 2022, winning the first 2 grand slams (I was so nervous at Australian Open I couldn’t start watching the final until the 5th set and it was so nerve wracking) he’s played some of his best tennis at AO was so unlucky to only win once so it was amazing he won slam 21 at the most statistically speaking unlikeliest venue. He had to dig deep in 4th French Open and no pundits were giving him a chance against Djokovic in the quarterfinals. I’ve never seen the sweat pour off him as bad as the semifinal that was a titanic battle. I’m pretty sure he would have won the second set tie break and then doubled down to close it in 3 sets but Zverev was playing very well. I perhaps thought the final might be tougher but with Ruud not playing him before I knew he’d struggle to deal with Rafa’s spin but in the end the final was pretty easy for Rafa. His last 2 Wimbledon appearances he reached semifinals so I’m hoping the magic continues and he wins his 3rd Wimbledon and 23rd slam. That would really annoy Djokovic as Rafa would have taken all 3 2021 slams off him. As it stands Djokovic won’t be allowed to play US Open as he hasn’t been jabbed.

22 grand slams will be surpassed one day, probably by Djokovic or by some future unknown player. 14 Roland Garros titles and counting is something I believe will never be surpassed in my lifetime ( I'm 40). To stay that dominant, that consistent, that relatively healthy for that amount of time is simply astonishing. Nadal's game on clay, when healthy, is the closest thing to unbeatable perfection the sport of tennis has ever seen. 36 years old, with a numb foot, with no preparation, beating 4 top 10 players to win the title. Words no longer does Rafa justice.

@@ingrafaelcobas ORLY? Like another one-handed Roger always used a lot of slices just because one-handed backhand being more aggressive still stays lesser reliable especially on high balls and takes more time for preparation, so when your backhand is under pressure slice is the option. Sure, late Federer in a lack of physics had to use slice much more often but he also started using slice as an offensive shot e.g. to pull an opponent to the half-position and so provoke him for unmotivated net rush or to prepare his own. He introduced back extremely aggressive serve response aka SABR forgotten in earlier 80s, he started using a lot of dropshots even from forehand... and finally did you see much of net playing from him in 00s even on the grass... if you remember Roger started exactly as serve-n-volley player but then he stepped on the throat of his own song to win... but late Federer took care that his rivals always kept in mind who is the daddy when Roger gets to the net... just like late Rafa lets them know that his forehand overrun does not mean indispensable topspin in the area and they should protect the diagonal with all the care if don't wanna ensure that Rafa also has extremly powerful and surgically precise flat on his forehand. Late Roger relayed much more on his wisdom, on his tactics, on psychological pressure to an oppenent than on his technique decayed in a lack of physics and he also started using all these dirty tricks like the medical timeout in 5th set of AO-2017 final.

@@alexeypavlyutkin886 ORLY??? I do not mean he can not hit high backhands balls, he do no apply never high top spin parallel in his back hand, and almost never high top spin with back hand, he started to used more the high top spin with forehand as he disvered he can recover better for some positions, NAdal varies all shots all heights most of the time specially with players who hit hard, I do agree slice is a very good option, but you can do it better with high top spin too some times with back hand. Roger with forehand never slow down the game is always one forehand speed few details now with high top spin in his forehand, Rafa can slow down or accelerated the height and speed of the ball much natural all the time, Novak can do so similar, but roger is almost so predictable, but offcourse his resources are dominated and quite dangerous

As a Djokovic fan before the game, I wrote that in case of such a match - two legends, tennis geniuses, who for more than a decade give us the most breathtaking and beautiful sensations we can dream of ( obviously plus Roger - his style of play is a classic of classics). TO NADAL THE GREATEST AND DEEPEST CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART !!! NOW I'M KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED FOR THE FRENCH OPEN 2022 CUP TO GO TO YOUR HAND. YOU DESERVE THIS AS NO ONE ELSE - YOUR WONDERFUL GAME, BEAUTIFUL TENNIS - I WANT TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU !!! I won't pretend to be extremely happy, because I'm always heartbroken when Nole loses ... But I will get it back together again ... However, I think that we are extremely lucky that we had and have the opportunity to watch tennis, at a time when the best three of the greatest are playing in this beautiful sport. Nadal is right - together they have created a magnificent piece of history. I think that they appreciate it sometimes even more than some of the fan base. I don't know if you guys follow their " comments" that they post to each other before games. Those brief conversations of theirs speak for everything. The respect that they have for each other is enormous. It is often us fans and press that are looking for sensationalism. Well... Today my dear Nole got defeated ... I feel sad ( whenever he loses, my mood isn't one of the greatest). But having a chance to watch such a tennis I can sum up in only one way. I sincerely appreciate, say thank you and I wish all the best !!! Keep playing as long as possible!!! Greetings to you all sincerely :-)

Rafa played at home! He won on his better court. It's normal!! It was most likely. People who believed that Djokovic would win on Roland Garros against Nadal don't know about how does plays Nadal. When he plays on the Phillip's Chatrier court he's a beast! Surely, Djokovic would win Nadal on grass, but on clay it's very difficult. I liked reading you!

As a rafa fan, I thought he was done years ago. The fact he is still competing at such a high level, beating Novak. Is down to his shear force of will, and love for the sport. With all his injuries, he has really nothing to proove. But his will to win is just amazing.

He is cocky, disrespectfull to other players and umpires, and does not hesitate to take your eye off its socket with a direct hit (well accurately aimed to your face) to win a point. In summary, he's a ZERO FAIRPLAY. Unjustifiable in all senses. NADAL certainly knows to take you down on a tennis match, but he HAS NO CLASS AT ALL!

@@99cya Totally. I just described a couple of reasons. Add to them, that he abuses his serving time, makes his rival take longer than needed when he's at receiving end, etc etc. But you know WHY he's allowed all that manipulation? ...because sells TICKETS and viewing audience for those who broadcast the tounament. I do not blame HIM (but those who do not make him follow the rules). But there's no doubt in my mind that he does not respect all he should/must. Djokovic is king of hard courts in Australia so Novak had better chance to beat Nadal there he even leads 2-0 against Nadal there. However at RG, Nadal is 8-2, so it’d be a fool to bet against Nadal. Last year was a rare win for Djokovic (Nadal was injured in that 4th set that caused him to end season), and awful 2015 Nadal worst version on clay at RG.
@jacobschmidt2709

This has nothing to do with Nadals asterisked AO win. This result tells us what we already know. Rafa is the king of RG and Novak the king of the AO. Novak would win RG if Nadal was deported just as Nadal won the Aussie because of Novaks deportation.

@@jacobschmidt2709 And this comment proves how delusional and disrespectful Novaxx fans are. The simple point of my comment is to simply respect Nadal's AO win, even if Novak is not there. No one even questioned Novak's dominance on AO, let alone on hard courts. The odds of Novak winning this year's FO is higher than ever, considering the conditions that favor him (night match at FO), Nadal's not in-form movements, and the time they spent on the match prior. And yet, Nadal delivered. Hypothetically, Novak should win this match. However, such is only a hypothesis: something that is similar to the what ifs that Novak may have won AO 2022. So stop this madness!
