I had a major case of deja vu as you raised that car on the lift, thinking it was going to have the same issues as the other red Mustang convertible, then started to get really angry for the customer as you explained the missing reinforcements that would be on a vert. I sure hope the customer has legal options to recoup the investment, as there is no way in Hades this car will ever attain the value of a true '65 convertible. This video is a case study in why a purchase of a classic car should ALWAYS be prefaced with a pre-purchase inspection by an expert in the particular model. Great video Kiwi, this one is important.

Convertibles are generally more flexible even _with_ the extra bracing. Considering the reinforcements are available, it's really dangerous that the builder didn't add them but did everything else to change it to a drop-top. Ridiculous. These cars should all get subframe connectors, too.

Mate! I've fallen over your channel just by accident and am bloody stoked to find a compatriot who knows as much about these beasts as you obviously do.....and even more so that you're over there where they were built, so you get to put your hands on a lot of muscle cars that us blokes back here can only view at shows from a distance. Good on ya, mate! Rapt out me tree for ya, I am! I've subscribed and black-belled myself to get the latest updates and am going to continue going back through the current catalogue of vids, but just had to stop and say something after getting the gist of your channel. Great to hear a Kiwi explaining things about these beauties with an accent and colloquialisms that come naturally to me! I'll pass the word around in the various groups / car clubs I'm in and see if we can't get you a few more viewers, eh? All the best from here in Takanini, Auckland.

Oh man... yeah, soon as I saw it on the lift I thought "someone repackaged that thing." With the price of classics being sky-high now, just seems like everyone is trying to make a quick buck by dressing them up and not worrying about the mechanics or structure. This is, sadly, going to end up with people getting hurt or killed (if it hasn't already).

Always, always, always check the chassis on a convertable. It will save you a lot of heartache. Never buy a car without inspecting it first. You can convert it to a convertable, but it will never be worth what a true convertable would bring. There are so many unscrupulous characters out there willing to take you for anything they can. Thanks for the tale of woe, and we'll see you next time.

I once looked at a Pontiac convertible that drove great and had nice red paint. I told them to put it on a lift. You could take a screwdriver and out it through the bottom of the frame from bumper to bumper, some places with your finger. They still wanted to sell it to me saying they could fix it. Ummm... No...

I'm always impressed with just how much classic car flippers are willing to do to cut corners, especially in terms of safety. There's a reason it's so important to know what you're looking st before making a big purchase. It's a shame because it really did look like a super nice car.

I've been driving convertibles since 1982. They are all flimsy and the structure moves quite a bit on bumpy roads. It's called Cowl shake. The front and rear ends are doing separate dances. The last thing you want is NO factory designed reinforcements. I put roll cages in my convertibles, subframe connectors, add'l custom bracing for that reason. That car must ride terribly on bumps and potholes.

The first red flag for me is: 1965 and 1966 GTs never came with rocker panel molding, and the chrome quarter panel ornaments in the "C" sculpted section. It's not a real GT. Also, wheel lip molding was never an option until 1967. It's sad people have to ruin the hobby for others by being cheese ball rip off artists.

Local fellow did a number of these back in the late 70s and early 80s. He was totally up front about it to the buyers. What he did was install a sub frame/brace. He had a pattern made and actually sold some of the frames. He was getting rust free southern cars and doing the conversion. A good friend of mine bought one from the fellow to put under his coupe as it has rust issues that weakened the unibody. He said it worked great. He still owns the car. It is sad this fellow got taken to the cleaners on this. What would it take to put the supports on this car??? $4-5K or more?? If he just wanted a fun driver car it would be fine after installing the braces.

It was like a Ponzi scheme , just involving cars because when a new one came in they used the money to work on a car that had come in earlier and so on so forth.. Not gonna name them, but he quit and got a job working as a mechanic with Honda. He says he's getting paid better, MUCH better, holiday pay, dental + medical all taken care of, insurance , worker comp you name it more money changing hands at the hotrod shop but better pay at little old Honda..

To be corny but this is truly a Convert-able, maybe an unable. I am always amazed at the work people will do and miss the big parts. It cost money to "convert" this car the parts alone were big money. I see a pet peeve of mine and a first red flag, I see overspray or red on suspension parts, namely the leaf spring sides. A proper paint job would cover and mask these parts. If they were missed and got red on them they would have been resprayed black. To me, overspray on parts means a cheap or low-quality job. If the owner sells the car now and does not disclose this problem it can lead to future problems for him... If I bought this car from a dealer, I'd be talking to my attorney, or Austin from DMG either way ;)

When I was younger, I didn't pay all that much attention to an undercarriage. I might take a peek, and if nothing looked completely fubar'd, carry on. Today, a different story: it tells a whole lot about the history of any used vehicle. Flippers may detail the inside and throw a fast paint job on something for quick curb appeal, but that's not taking care of the car really - the undercarriage is the backbone of any ride, and unfortunately...not photographed that often, especially in period literature. It takes someone who has worked under a type of vehicle to spot problems in many cases. Anyway, convertibles need a proper garage to last. That's not as big a deal as say... wanting a 9 foot concert piano - finding a house it fits is a slightly harder task.
@geraldscott4302
@geraldscott4302 8 ай бұрын
I NEVER buy a car without inspecting the undercarriage. And I've found some real nightmares. Foxbody Mustangs from 1979-2004 almost always have significant damage to the undercarriage due to lifting and jacking. The Fox platform really doesn't have any good lifting points. The jack that comes with the car was designed to use the pinch welds for jacking. But if you do, you will bend them. The short front "frame rails" are made oof the same thin steal as the floor pans, and you will crush them if you use them as lifting points. It can be done, I always put a 24" long 2x4 between the jack or lift to avoid making a big dent in the frame rail. Even the K member under the engine is made out of this super thin steel. Don't try to jack the car from there. The only really safe places to jack it from is the rear axle, and under the front control arms. This also applies to the Foxbody Thunderbird, Granada, and Fairmont. I consider the Fox platform to be the worst thing Ford ever came up with. It flexes like a wet noodle. Even on one in perfect condition, if you jack up one corner of the car high enough to remove a wheel, the doors won't open and close.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning vehicles any more..!!!

He has a bunch of bad choices now. Drive it the way it is and hope for the best. Sell it and don't tell the buyer. Spend thousands of dollars to fix it. Most people will chose option 1 or option 2.

How the hell is it a Ford problem? Kiwi CLEARLY stated that it left the factory as a COUPE, not a convertible!!!! This happened long after Ford built the thing!!

Cars made of steel, rust! No manufacturer is immune from that reality, add 30-40-50 years to that equation and you have a problem. This particular cars troubles were all created by whoever tried to turn a hardtop into a convertible the cheap way instead of the right way.

How the hell is it Ford's fault? It left the factory as a hardtop, some dimwit made it a convertible AFTER it left the factory!

Any car would do the same thing if you cut the top off gm, honda, toyota. The top is an important part of the the cars structural integrity. All rag tops have to be reinforced because of that.
