As an Iowan I always want everyone’s RABGRAI to be as enjoyable as possible. I was worried 2023 would test a lot of ppls’ patience/limits due to so many new & return riders joining in for the 50th anniversary & causing never-before-seen congested roads, long lines, etc. But then add the oppressive heat & humidity (& wind), and I know a lot of ppl struggled this year more than usual. Still worth it for Thelma’s, Mr Porkchop, the pie & the goats, but will be glad to see more normal #s next year. And it can’t possibly be that hot again. (Can it? 😏😨😉)

Ha I sure hope it won’t be that hot again. Talk about a very challenging Ragbrai. Last year was our first and it was a walk in the park compared to this one. But hey, still a great event! Will be excited to see what next year brings.

We can only hope it wont be that hot again 🤞🏼🤞🏼We’ve only done RAGBRAI twice but the difference between this year and last, as far as the number of people, was huge! The lines to get the above mentioned food items were SO long! They were so long we skipped many of them this year and opted for choices with much shorter lines.

Day 2 starting at 7:15am. Ugh, i started at 5:30, then 5, then 4:30, but I had no nightlife all week. I was so scared of the heat and long lines to the kybos. Kybos were a major hazard all week. They were mostly clean but also a sauna.1:30pm and did 36 miles I was setting up my tent. You definitely had more fun off the bike than I did. The hoses and sprinklers were a savior to finish each day. Our charge station was two 4-shelf units with extension cords everywhere. Day 3 Yay, 5am wake ups. Hury hury the sun will be up soon. Nooooooooo!!! The sun is up and you're still in camp. Maybe tomorrow??? Keep those smiles all week and it would have been easy. Off topic, the fires in Lahaina are so sad to follow. Congrats on the paceline and 17mph. Best quote of the ride " Everyone struggling together". Luther hill was a suffer fest with the heat. Awesome part 2. Be well you two.
@TylerandKari
@TylerandKari 11 ай бұрын
I think we need to start earlier like you did. We didn’t even have much of a night life, but struggled to get to bed and then pushed us later in the mornings. Those kybos do get scorching by the end of the day lol. Haha I knew some people were likely done by mid day when we were just getting to the middle of our ride. Our goal was always to be on the ride early, just didn’t quite go as planned. As for everyone struggling, it’s nice to be surrounded knowing you’re not alone. Thanks for the comment!

I did RAGBRAI in 2012. And, after a hard day of pedaling I never had a problem sleeping. As for washing up. Get some Wet Wipes. I carried a packet of those in 2012 and they worked great. Any ways, yes the lines where long, which is why I choose not to ride this year, I knew what was coming. P.S. A small battery operated fan for your tent.

I might have seen you guys on the tandem in the dirt. It was my first gravel ride on RAGBRAI and I loved it. Would have preferred that it didn't intersect with the road riders but I suppose we have to play nice with the rest of the pack lol. Didn't like the idea that they handed out gravel patches in town instead of on the gravel route (which made more sense since anyone can grab one and not having ridden gravel) but that's just me.

What bikes are you and your parents riding? I see your Mom is riding a Priority e-bike (but which one - the Current?) and Kari is riding a Sprecialized Vado. I am hoping that future Apollos will incorporate their new Smart Shift technology from their new 600HXT, and possibly the Pinion gearbox vs the Alfine (to give a greater gear range). Do most people lock their bikes up overnight or in the towns? Looking to do this next year and am curious if there are any thefts reported?
@TylerandKari
@TylerandKari 11 ай бұрын
We locked ours up nearly every night our first year. Then this year I think we left them unlocked every night. Just depends on how the town looks and our tent location. As far as I could tell, most towns no, people don’t lock bikes up. But we keep ours in view most of the time. I know of people having them stolen (stories, not any directly that I know of though). We always have our lock just in case we want to use it.
@IowaNinersFan
@IowaNinersFan 11 ай бұрын
Haven't seen or experienced theft in any town but I've read about them on the forum. We usually don't lock our bikes up but it also depends on where we set up tents. Most riders are good people and keep to themselves and their belongings. If there are any thefts, it's probably the towns people (or outsiders strolling through) to commit the crime on unexpected visitors IMO. There were plenty of bike computers, lights, water bottles, sunglasses, etc..... littered on the roads that's for sure.
