For RATM you really have to look at the lyrics. Zach spits bars. This one was a reaction to Rodney King and the LA riots. Calling out racism in the police force. These guys go deep. And yes, the music kicks ass.

Yup, they are like children who have discovered "Muh first politics for beginners"...some of the dumbest idiots. This is one of their few songs and political 'messages' that hit a truth without being too full-on cringe and wrong in other ways like they usually are, sort of like a broken clock does by mistake twice a day. Basically because "hey guys, racism bad" is such a complex, intelligent realisation...🙄 Actually you're wrong as this clearly isn't all about L.A. riots, as "F you I won't do what you tell me" is just cheap childish anti-parents tantrum messaging which SELLS well. Definitely has nothing to do with the L.A. Riots, just something that children want to hear. Probably some of the record company executives came up with that part of the lyrics to sell more records...and they cleaned up all the "too edgy" messaging too. But their music sounds great.

This was the Perfect First Song for RATM. This song was a Protest song about the treatment of black people by police in the US. "Some of those that were forces' (police) 'Are the same that bore crosses' Ku Kux Klan (white terrorist organization - their symbol was burning crosses in the yards of black people to scare them from living in 'White' communities) 'They justified those that died by wearing the Badge of Your chosen White'. Saying they used their power to put down and sometimes kill people of a different color. This was a Very Serious song. Interestingly, it got popular and a lot of white racists listen to this song to this day, and don't understand that the lyrics are written about them. Great Song and Great Reaction Biss!!

The band broke up because Zach did not like the direction the band was going- what tee shirts was going to look like, selling out for commercial gain while the initial core of the band and its purpose, messages was being cast aside. I still love RATM. I was very disappointed when I tried to buy a ticket it was near end of the pandemic and a price for a regular ticket was near $600 bucks. That's when a band has lost touch with what got them there

These guys were once performing this *live* in the UK for a TV channel and they told them not to swear. They went and screamed "fuck you I won't do what you tell me" while flipping off the camera and the channel had to quickly cut the performance in the middle. I recently learnt this on guitar (drop D tuned) and its pretty fun to play. I think you'll be able to do it on stream too.

And every time I listen to it nowadays I am still so grateful "I was there" when RATM, Pearl Jam. Nirvana, Alice in chains, Soundsgarden were dominating the music scene.... And is great to see you feel it too! Thank you. ~ Vals EDIT: it is called stage diving and there is always a risk for some serious injuries but the thrill is awesome! 6:50 “What’s happened? What happened?” A big part of punk and metal shows at smaller venues where fans can actually reach and get onto the stage is something called stage diving. You get up on the stage, maybe rock out for a second before you jump, and then you dive into the crowd. Or rather, onto the crowd, and immediately begin crowd surfing. This used to happen all the time at smaller shows for all kinds of punk and metal bands. It was just an accepted and expected thing to happen. At this point in the video where you’re asking what happened, it seems as though people had started stage diving and one of the security guards doesn’t seem to understand that this is actually a thing, and he’s somewhat violently trying to stop a fan from doing this, and this makes the singer get upset and he starts yelling at the security guy to knock it off because there’s nothing wrong with fans doing this. The security guy didn’t seem to know about people doing this and he overreacted, and his overreaction pissed the singer off because it is just people trying to have fun. Nothing wrong was going on. Everything was fine. The guard was probably used to working shows with other kinds of music where the artists wouldn’t want some fan rushing the stage, and this was probably his normal reaction at non-punk and non-metal shows. Except here the reaction was unnecessary and he was unaware.

*SO* happy to see you discovering Rage Against the Machine. All of their songs are heavily related to their band name, and a lot are specific to actual events. This song was inspired by the Rodney King beating of Rodney King by the police and the subsequent riots in Los Angeles. They've always had their own style, you can almost always pick out their songs when tou hear them, but you've got it correct, they're among the first to do a rap-metal fusion, and their lyrics & songs were always so well written that they're well-received and poignant today. Other good tracks are Bulls on Parade and Rodeo (as in the high-end shopping area "Ro-day-oh" Drive, not the horses and cowboys "Ro-dee-oh")

Rage against the machine (Evil Empire) was the first CD I ever bought. It's ingrained in my then teenage brain, and I love them to death. What is great about RATM is that the songs are so funky, that you can just jam to them without paying attention to the lyrics. But when you read them, they describe a history of oppression in a lyrical form. This song you chose is great, but it's also with the fewest lyrics and most repetitive. As others wrote, it's about police brutality. This song is from their epynymous first album, which contains like 8 hits out of 10 songs. Wake up, bullet in the head and know your enemy would be my next choices. With them, I suggest watching lyrics videos or at least have them pulled up while you listen. They're also great jams, but contain more message.

Most Rage songs condemn oppression and injustice. This songs condemns white supremacy and police brutality in the US. The lyrics were "Some of those who work (police) forces are the same who burn crosses" and "Those who died are justified by wearing a badge (police) they're the chosen whites". You should watch their live 1993 performance of this song. They absolutely KILL it in their live 1993 performance of this song. Other Rage songs that you MUST hear that also have an important message: - "Know Your Enemy" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for that one) - "The Ghost of Tom Joad" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for that one too) - "Bulls on Parade" (quite possibly their most famous song of all time)

Nice reaction @Bisscute This song is the essence of RATM and it was on their debut album in 1992 and imo the perfect starting point for reactions. For me this is one of the best albums of all time. Back in the day when this came out we called the genre crossover. It was sick because mixing so many genres was quite new. Just saw them once live and it was crazy. The whole crowd was going nuts and no mobile phones - it was 2002 in Düsseldorf germany. There is a video of the full concert online on youtube. I remember us stripping almost naked after the concert cause we were sweating like hell - it was february by the way. 😆

40 sec in a song and we already know you like it :))) One of my favourite songs of all time and I think this is the best of their song. I see your last reaction is "bulls on parade" - very good choice. Other to consider are "bombtrack" or soundtrack from Matrix movie "Wake up".

Ive seen ratm a few times live and its an experience for sure. I'll never forget at a big day out where they were headlining and did their whole show and didnt do this song or so we thought and as they were going off stage they came back on for an encore and did killing in the name of and the whole place just went nuts things went flying people climbing ripping down stuff etc was a great way to end it.

This is a great pick for first reaction - the ending was an anthem for rebellion in my teenage years! One of my other favorites is Wake Up - it's another one that builds and then ends in a powerful way! Bombtrack, Testify, Bulls on Parade, Bullet in the Head - these are all amazing songs by this (literally) revolutionary band!

This is very nostalgic. I used to listen to them all the time when I was a kid in the 90's.

I've heard the name before but never listened to the songs. You had the moves down right, it's a head banger.

Rage Against the Machine spoke about real shit in their music. Love you, @Bisscute. Thanks for keeping it metal. 🤘🤘 You picked the right one. You're referring to stage diving and crowd surfing.

Rage's lead guitarist and Tool's Adam Jones were buds in high school, and the bands did a few gigs together in the early 90's.

Had the privaledge to see them live 2 times. Best live band to ever exist. From start to finish just pure mosh pit, i nearly died. I think is a good first song to react to. It literally only gets better from here. Was a good song before christmas as there was a massive fan push to get this song as christmas no.1 in 2009 to break the monopoly that X Factor had. Id recommend Bullet in the head, Sleep now in the fire, Wake Up, Know your enemy, Freedom, Take the Power back, Guerilla Radio, Testify. Basically all Rage songs.

Is incredible to see Rage Again the Machine an see their are the base of AUDIOSLAVE (bass, guitar, drums)... only change the voice of Zack del la Rocha for Chris Cornell... two very different style of rock... true musicians.

There is nothing that makes a person feel older than when a 30-year-old band still hits harder than many bands today. "Rage Against The Machine" never disappoints. I'm sure you've gotten the standard suggestions, but might I recommend "Sleep Now In The Fire", "Know Your Enemy" (which if you find the right video, features Manyard James Keenan of Tool), "Freedom", and "People of the Sun".
