A few insights: 1. Yes, Lyonel Strong is dead. That was the goal even above killing Harwin because now Otto will return as hand, which was Alicent's wish. 2. Laena was going to die no matter what if they couldn't get the baby out - although a c-section would be a much more torturous way to go. She chose Vhagar's fire because it was the quickest option and because she wanted to die a dragon rider's death. I think they implied that Daemon wasn't going with the c-section. Viserys's wife, Aemma, was immediately held down and cut open despite her struggling so if Daemon had made the same choice I imagine Laena would not have been able to get outside like she did. This does highlight a crime of Viserys's that everyone seems to have forgotten. He condemned his wife to a horrible, terrifying death while she begged him not to do it. Viserys certainly has good qualities but I don't think what he did to Aemma should be forgotten. And let's be real - a man getting to decide that a woman suffers against her will so that a baby (might) live is a very relevant issue today. 3. Speaking of Daemon I think this was a really interesting episode for him. He has abandoned his ambitions and wants to stay away from politics, which is such a departure from what we've seen from him. He wants to live an obscure but comfortable life which Laena objects to because, as dragonriders and the blood of old Valyria, they are above that. It's also pretty clear to me that Daemon is struggling with depression. Laena says that he isn't sleeping, has been isolating himself, is disappointed by life, etc. He wishes the wine was stronger so he could drink himself into oblivion. There was a leaked shot where Daemon hugged and comforted his daughters but it didn't make the final cut. Big mistake in my opinion if they meant to humanize him this episode (especially since he's apparently been ignoring the daughter who doesn't have a dragon). In the books, for all his many flaws, he was a loving father. GRRM has said Daemon is his favorite character and I do think he's at his most compelling when his awful traits are mixed with good. So I hope they explore that further.

It was the same situation as Aemma. Laena was going to die. There was a chance the child could survive if they cut Laena open but knowing Laena would not, Daemon shook his head no. He couldn't do that to her. Laena then took it upon herself, knowing she was going to die, to die a dragonriders death. By fire. You could tell Vhaegar was hestitant but at some point, when Laena is begging, there is an understanding that sweeps over Vhaegar where she seems to understand Laena is dying and ends her suffering. Daemon loved Laena and loves his daughters, very, very much.

Yes, you are both right. Viserys had to choose between losing the baby AND his wife, or losing his wife. As for Laena, she regained some agency in her own death, and to not suffer horribly like Aemma. In the books, it is much more bittersweet : she births a dead demon like baby (it happens some times in the Targaryen family) on her way to Vhagar, because she wanted to ride her as she dies. Daemon then put her dead body in her bed. Different take here, much more impactful and grim, but I would have loved to see Daemon much more affectionate to Laena, as he is in the books.

Ironic how people like to shit on Daemon, his character growth, and him being a father figure...when his children are the ones that continue the legacy. He's probably the most protective parent of the kids out of all of them.

Daemon was in the previous scene teaching his other daughter. Pay better attention Daemon was a "softer" person for these 10 years. He's been sitting in a library. The doctor said Laina was about to die. And she said she wanted to die a dragon riders death. Please turn up your volume

Daemon in the books is the best father, he loves his two daughters that he had with Laena and he never ignored them both, what they did in the series is not correct.

"lot smarter than Jon"...that was the first quip in my mind too...but Jon had black hair. And he had no reason to doubt the story of Ned being his father. It's not that easy to just randomly figure out "oh I'm actually your sister's son". The appropriate comparison would be "lot smarter than Joffrey and Tommen".

As far as I understand, Larys offed his brother and father to fulfill the queen's wish: have her father by her side at court back as the hand. But additionally, now he also has something to hold against her, which further solidifies his position in court (and he also inherits Harrenhal I think)

I think Daemon loved Laena very much. Unfortunately they cut a scene where, after her death, Daemon is hugging both their daughters.

Daemon is great father in the books to his daughters I don't know why they downplayed that aspect of his character for the show. And on Twitter a pic is being share of Daemon consoling his daughters after their mother died, apparently the director cut the scene an no one knows why.

Daemon definitely DOESN'T suck as a father. U literally just saw him teaching Baela Valerian, and lovingly saying goodnight to her. Daemon truly loves his family. He saw the greens coming in ep 1, when Otto got him sent away, & then kept them apart in ep 2, telling Daemon that Viserys would never come & entertain his "mommas farce". They also cut scenes of Daemon lovingly comforting his grieving daughters, cuddling both his twins in his arms. Huh, Jon Snow didn't grow up with any true parent and had no reason to question his parentage, except for who his mother was, which he assumed was low born.

Larys basically killed two birds with one stone. By taking out his father and brother he’s now the lord of Harrenhal. It also allows Alicent to try and get her father back in as hand.

Viserys knows rhaenyra left, we saw him kissing his old marriage ring (with aemma, rhaenyra's um) crying... so he is super sad that she left (and her kids, he is a big fan haha), but the fact that she left does not mean that she is not the heir anymore - it is just not really smart because alicent can plot freely now...

"I don't understand why she just left her daughters" seriously blake? just think a little, her killing herself doesn't mean she didn't love her daughters, she was already dead anyway, so she chose to die a "dragons rider death" as she mentioned earlier...

Rhaenyra’s sons are Jacerys(Jace), Lucerys(Luke) and Joffrey. Alicent has Aegon, Aemond, Helaena.

You can see Daemon shakes his head no when asked if he wants to do the C section. He didn’t want to put her through that.

If you look closely, Daemon chose to save Laena not the baby, when she went to Vhagar the baby wasn't in her belly and I think she might ve died anyway for loss of blood or other complications, so she chose to die this way.

Laena didn't left her daughters, she was gonna die either way, she just chose how.

This show has highlighted how little people (who haven’t had kids or someone close - more men but def some women too) know about childbirth or are unaware of or more likely are uncomfortable with how gruesome it can get. It’s just interesting that society has brought us here. It’s a common reaction I’ve seen. Also, I think Aegon scene is to show how above-it-all he is. And Rhaenyra scene is symbolizing her lack of control. Finally, Herenhal (sp?) was destroyed in episode 1.

By doing a c-section you have a chance to save the baby. By not doing the c-section both die. You can't live with an undeliverable baby inside you forever you would either bleed to death or die from infection. However an important note is we don't know how much time these poor women have been in labour, or if they could have done it with more time... the longer the birth though the more likely a baby is to die due to stress. Daemon shook his head when offered the option and I think he hoped she could deliver the baby in time and live, and he didn't care if the baby lived because he valued Laena over thier unborn bubs. Daemon is a good dad in the books, which makes sense with what we know of Daemon so far, he loves his brother and nice above everything, so I think its safe to assume he loves his kids very much

Daemon and Viserys had to make the same choice: save only the baby or lose both mother and the baby. In those times, it would be a high risk of death for the mother if there were complications with the baby because it would mean the mother would have to be cut open to retrieve the baby (breech, deformed, etc). That kind of surgery in those times was violent and fatal. Daemon shook his head “no” when asked to try to save the mother, so he made the opposite choice than Viserys. Lastly, Laena heard what the doctor said to Daemon and took matters into her own hands. Also I read that they removed a scene with Daemon comforting his daughters (wish they would have kept that in and removed the scene of Aegon jerking off). Remember Daemon was teaching Valerian to Baela. So I believe he truly loved Laena as well as his daughters (even though he may show more attention to Baela because she’s a dragon rider).

If a child is in breach or stuck the woman dies either way. The child has to get out for the woman to live. Imagine if the babes stays inside forever? Either a woman can push it out or get it cut out :( The choice is always mother AND babe die or hopefully only the mom dies when they cut the babe out.

They obviously want to parallel Leana with Aemma. In the book the child was born but died soon and she was sick afterwards. She wanted to fly her dragon one last time, but died on the way to her. Daemon found her and carried her back to bed and sat there with Rhaenyra. I think you just want Daemon to be a pure evil. This kind of death seems so lame to me, what is "dragonrider" about it? Getting barbecued? Death by fire was always viewed as the worst kind of death in the asoiaf universe, or am I wrong? It's horrific. I get why they are changing certain things for the show, but Laena and Rhaenyra were meant to be good friends, which we do not get here. A shame. And just one episode of adult Leana didn't do her character a real justice either.

In the show, Daemon is not much of a father; he offers protection to his children and that's about it. In the book, there is at least one instance where he directly advocates for one of his daughters (in an issue of potential punishment for an indiscretion).

At first I dislike because they didn’t show how Cole is good as a fighter but after the « fight » between him and Strong I really love what they do with his character. Cole litteraly provoce Strong and Strong take the bait. Strong punch Cole many times but it was nothing for Cole laughing his ass and getting back on his feet right after it. Strong expose himself for this , for nothing and die for this. This show how ruthless and clever Cole really is and why he is the real predator in this era.

I’m glad Laena kept her body autonomy and made her own choice and went out like a boss. I hope Daemon wakes up. I don’t like this storyline for him.
