If the sex of the protagonist doesn't matter, why are feminists constantly triggered about this alleged lack of female leads?
@jebe4563
@jebe4563 7 жыл бұрын
It's perfectly rational. You're supposed to White Knight when she says there's not enough female leads, and excuse her responsibility when she claims it doesn't matter after she's summarized her demands.

They never talk about games that allow you to pick and customize their character, its really annoying how they either gloss over or straight out ignore that. Regardless you don't tell an artist what to paint and you don't tell a game designer how to make their game. If I made a game and I wanted the protagonist's side kick to be a floating pair of wise cracking tits with bazookas instead of nipples. Then by fucking god I will put in there because it'd be my fucking game damn it!

This is the most egregious problem I see with this approach. The fact that all these people want to tell other people how to do their jobs. A game is a piece of art. The creator has full control over it. You don't like it, tough cookies. Don't buy it. Become a game designer. Create your own games.
@louise-nf_ch
@louise-nf_ch 7 жыл бұрын
They do. They just getting yelled at. There's a certain irony when gamers yell "censorship" when it's in their favor. If the creator's pressured to remove something people largely don't care about(like say with Mevius Final Fantasy) you don't hear shit and the change of the artistic vision is 100% acceptable. But anyways I am not sure why I am bothering to write about this. It's mostly likely gonna get dogpiled anyways.
@whitehorsemilitia
@whitehorsemilitia 7 жыл бұрын
exactly what I say, if developers made a game based on people's ideas, you will have to make like thousands of different variations of the same game just to please certain people. a female protagonist for Gears of war, a black protagonist for Gears of War. You cannot make a game that appeals to everyone, that is why a thing called "Target Audience" exists in the Media industry, it is because they want a certain group of gamers to play it.
@louise-nf_ch
@louise-nf_ch 7 жыл бұрын
That's is very much true. Though is it bad to occasionally try to appeal to more people at the same time? I am not saying: change games fundamentally, but would it really be that much of a bother if say a MMO in the signup page includes a third gender option(ex. not specified). It's very little effort and doesn't affect anyone except for the ones that like it. Which may not even be that many, but still. It does little. Just baby steps, that's all.
@BackstabbyBoy
@BackstabbyBoy 7 жыл бұрын
There are no third gender. Deal with it.
@whitehorsemilitia
@whitehorsemilitia 7 жыл бұрын
A MMORPG is a different thing, I do think it is important for Roleplaying games to have more options for your player but in terms of a 3rd Gender? (I personally believe there is only male and female but have enough respect to let people decide their own views) I do not think that will cause any problems to the developers but when it comes to the majority's common views as well as other player's interpretations, they may address you as a male or a female because you generally look like one or the other, you cannot assume people are going to know you are a different gender by appearance and you cannot expect people to just accept your 3rd gender and deal with it when people judge gender on appearance. For a shooter game set in World War II, you cannot expect a multiplayer or singleplayer to give the option of playing a female or 3rd gender when such things were not seen at the time. females only recently been given the option to be on the frontlines though it is still a challenge to accept because man's instincts is to protect a woman from harm, especially if they know them so I assume it would do more damage than save lives and you cannot called that sexist because that has always been an instinct for millennia just just women are naturally able to mother a child because instincts. So as for 3rd Gender? it can be accepted in MMORPGs but do not expect it in any game that has a story to tell from someone's point of view.

Hikaru Joestar trust me, she isn’t the first feminist to do so. they all seem to start having that in common once they get bigger channel wise, and as a female i find it dumb that they say this sorta shit. i also find horizon zero dawn is an awesome game and i can’t wait to see more from the group who made the game. it was very interesting story wise and the ending was extremely excited to me, not the final boss but the story centered around it, it did do some sequel baiting but i can forgive it for how excited the story was to me, just my personal opinion, and this chick is somewhat wrong, some characters did find alloy very attractive, like Petra for instance. however they didn’t force a relationship for this game either, and i appreciate that a ton, since it seems a lot of games try to force that. horizon was actually the game that drew me to the ps4 after my switch died too, and even though they sequel baited they actually could just leave the game as a one off and it would still work very well in relation to story, it does seem like we will get more from this series and i can’t wait for more. sorry to ramble a bit, it’s just all that came to my mind while listening to her points, at least halfway through the video anyways.

Most gamers actually like female protagonists. Tomb Raider and Mirror's Edge has female protagonists and people love them. Many people have female characters in Skyrim. Just go on to nexus and look at what people do with their characters. Women might not get this but men really do like women it is like there is a natural attraction towards them. And it doesn't have to be sexual either. Strong female characters look cooler because they are female and yet strong. Also playing as a female character is more interesting especially if the gender plays a role in the story. So despite what feminists say I believe most men are tempted to play as a female lead in games and that's why you are seeing this kind of games being made: they sell.

Witcher 3(example used in video) is actually the most feminist game I've ever played. Excluding Geralt, every woman is good, smart, kind, etc and every man is evil, dumb, shifty. Then Geralt is a straight up white knight. A woman steals something and men chase her -reaction-> kill those men. A woman gets insulted and Geralt is like "That's no way to speak to a lady". His girlfriend yennifer treats him like a beta male and other characters even call him out on it. The first storyline is about an abusive husband and father. In the Skellige elections, the woman once again is the best leader. Trish is saving all the witches from the evil male king. The world is being saved by some girl who's being chased by an evil man. If you want the best ending you have to enable her to act like a spoiled child. The blood and wine expansion is even worse. A woman manipulates a man to destroy a town. Then, if you want the good ending, you actually have to kill the man she manipulated and save her. If you let the guy go you end up in jail. That game is so fucking retarded sometimes.
@Oli_Dann
@Oli_Dann 7 жыл бұрын
Right Wing Radio I agree heavily. Always found it annoying how Geralt would say "That's no way to treat a lady" because someone was a little rude to her, yet he's fine with beating up, or even murdering men who don't deserve it. If a woman is committing a crime, I want to be able to stop her and put her to justice, not kill the guys who are mad at her (like the example you gave.

it's an RPG so it depends on your choices and how you see things example yennefer doesn't have to be your romance option you can chose triss or neither and just go to a brothel. the bloody baron story line paints both the husband and wife as pieces of shits just for different reasons, geralt even comments on this. the skellige election depends on what you perceive as good or bad since both siblings have pros and cons to their rule. you said the women is the best leader that's probably because its the way you see it others might think its better for skellige to maintain their military tactics. ciri the girl who saves the world is being chased by an evil man (elf) but is being saved by a good man. the blood and wine ending again depends on what you think is a good ending, maybe the good ending is letting her die to save a kind of sort of innocent vampire man. you do got jail but your set free later on no harm done. I hate SJW as much as the next guy but come on man not everything is a conspiracy against men. be very careful your starting to sound like them.

1. Geralt is a white knight, no matter what you choose. 2. yennifer is his girlfriend before any romance options 3. The baron is clearly the bad guy. You even get to tell him how much of a piece of shit he is. Was he an abusive husband and father? yes. Does he get aired out excessively for it? yes. 5. Ciri is being saved by a good man? OK, but who is the hero? Ciri. Who is the evil one? right... 6. Oh, you get thrown in jail and the entire city hates you and you don't get your money. No harm done though....lmao dude. Lastly, what did I ever say about SJW's? Oh yeah, nothing.

No one is going to address the problem with the game having humanity regress back to stone age hunter/gatherer technological development and using makeshift spears and bows while *_hunting down killer autonomous robots_*, but we have to address the fact that the main playable character... is a woman? Find me a person that actually cares about that aspect. Please. I want to hear them actually say (and not simply as a joke) that they won't play Horizon: Zero Dawn because the main character is a woman and not for actual pressing concerns like the game's story and setting are concerning (e.g. narrative cohesion, suspension of disbelief, plot holes, ect.)
@matchesburn
@matchesburn 7 жыл бұрын
+Dishoungh White But that still doesn't make sense. It's at least excusable (although not admirable) if someone is not interested in politics or world events and is ignorant/uniformed on the matter. Or even if they're people influenced by whatever the mass media feeds them. At the end of the day, they're just another person and it it's inconsequential in the big scheme of things. ...That isn't the case in Horizon: Zero Dawn. You're a hunter/gatherer and you're actively looking for a fight with killer-fucking-robots. And you're using spears. And bows. When your life is in jeopardy and you're actually in combat, unless you're an unhinged berzerking-nearing-suicidal dolt, you're going to look for technological edges in combat. This is one of the things humanity does best - inventing new ways to kill things. I mean, it's not like the society we see is an actual stone age society. It's humans in the future that have reverted to that. Even if we didn't build the killer robots and they didn't turn on us and they're alien or whatever, we still have documentation of about 6,000 years of human progress. More if you count cave paintings. And, even if we didn't, some village shaman or some shit is going to see killer robots dispensing death, murder and mayhem and think "gee, that's awfully fucking useful abilities - we know these things have parts and components that make them up just like we have bones, so what if we could use their abilities?". I refuse - _absolutely refuse_ - to sit back and accept that in the face of *_possible extinction_* that humanity would be _that retarded_ and keep steadfastly using spears made of metal scrap and makeshift bows to take on autonomous combat-ready killer robots. It's fucking absurd. Even more so when, IIRC, in one of the past gameplay trailers we see the main character tossing a consumable EMP/electricity grenade at one of the robots. I mean come the fuck on... From both a gameplay and a narrative stand-point, that's just a contradiction and a dumb move.

Whenever the topic comes up about gender for protagonists the only thing I care about is believability. Doesn't matter what gender or color the protagonist is as long as what they are doing fits with however the character is designed. Alloy looks and feels believable for her role in this game. If she was ripping the robots apart with her bare hands I would have a hard time rolling with that.

This reminds me of movies like Cowboys and Aliens or Independence Day with its naive message of "it doesn't matter if the enemy outclasses you with who knows how many thousands of years of technological development, firepower and outnumbers you greatly, you can still win by being brave and special and smart and perfect!" The suspension of disbelief is at an all-time low for me with this game.

I may be late on this but I just found this video. Wasn't Nathan Drake literally designed by a focus group of women, that were asked what they found sexy in men? Also, don't feminists/sjw always argue that they have a problem with games because characters don't look like them? So even if a small group of people didn't play Zero Dawn because the lead doesn't look like them, isn't that in line with feminist beliefs?

No matter whether they're the matriarchal Nora, the Sundom of Carja with their sun-kings or any others. Once you learn of the past and how things got to where they are in HZD it reveals all of those attempts at forming society to be just the same old fallible humans doing their mistakes over and over again...

@@markotark Yeah, but this is in a world where rebelling means being murdered by robots, so I'd expect her to be either dead or highly disciplined. He is literally the only person in the world she can trust, and I'd think he'd at least want to make sure it couldn't hurt her. Frankly, he should have introduced it as something he found on a hunt and taught her how to use it, this would give them some nice bonding moments rather than most of the childhood sections consisting of Aloy being a little shit. People who say it is a disadvantage to be a woman in Mount and Blade Warband haven't been paying attention. While it is true that to directly control fiefs, you need much more renown, there are many advantages, most notably that you can be married to lords, allowing you indirect control over much much more with a lot less effort. Because M&B Warband is one of the best medieval simulators in existance. The only game so far that I have seen that will probably beat it out in that department is Kingdom Come: Deliverance. "The developers didn't have to portray Aloy as a sexual object to sell the game." Ok, what the fuck? Aloy is in no way sexual. At all. First, she's voiced by Ashly Burch... so that's a boner-killer right there... but seriously, she's not flirtatious, she doesn't wear skin-tight clothing, she doesn't have any romantic relationships at any point in the whole game, despite being written as a *complete* Mary Sue. And I'm not joking about how Aloy is written. People literally end up worshiping her. She is the unique chosen one with no flaws, secret powers no one else has or even understands, and whom everyone loves... and anyone who doesn't love her is portrayed as petty and envious of her success... and Aloy always gets the last word in, leaving them gnashing their teeth at her one-liners. At one point, Aloy meets a king... and he's on the border of throwing himself at her until she sets him straight... and of course he apologizes and respects women from that point forward. Imagine... a king throwing himself at a savage from a backward tribe who only did a minor favor for one of his subjects (relatively speaking for a king). Oh, and spoilers... she's actually a _clone_ of the (also female) genius scientist who developed the plan that saved all life on Earth from extinction by developing a super smart learning and compassionate AI (that loved her, of course) and then sacrificed herself after a mechanical malfunction threatened her project. Y'know, 'cause it wasn't enough that she had to be the savior of mankind. She also had to be a martyr to the cause and an unappreciated hero of her time. Just about every cutscene was making me groan and roll my eyes toward the end of the game. But getting back on track, the only person that comes _close_ to having a romantic relationship with Aloy is the son of the war chief of her tribe whom she, without any kind of set up, starts offering to teach all these secrets of the past... even then, it's not overt. It's only implied... but he's the _only_ person she favors this way.

OuroborosChoked i can somewhat agree that she is very much a mary sue at points, but i personally still really enjoy the story they got going on in my background, you know with what’s going on in the world and what happened there to make it what it was in her time. i also will say that being voiced by Ashley burch isn’t a turn off to everybody, i find her voice very good for the characters i’ve heard her play so far, like chloe and alloy, they’ve both kinda been turn ons for me tbh. but i’m a lesbian that kinda likes when voices are a bit softer in some ways but blunt in others, so it just might be me, hell if i know for sure.

Actually a modern feminist hero would use female qualities to solve problems. Such as talking out problems. Group interactions. Language skills. Combat skills is just generic action hero stuff and her gender identity is basically blank. Rags may see himself as anti feminist but it seems he agrees and demonstrates a true modern feminist disposition toward this issue.

Agreed. Though imteresting how fewer and fewr games allow that... see fallout 4. Im just saying what a faction of feminist theorists desire to see. But feminism like all "isms" isnt one single belief. Some like to see women heroes as described in the video acting like male heroes. Some have no issue with women protagonists being powerful sexual creatures others see that as demeaning. Its one of the reasons that hollywood or the gaming industry are unable to cater to feminism because the bar keeps moving. The best thing in my opinion is for creators to make characters who act true to their history and motivations and change according to their experiences like everybody does and in that way avoid bad shallow stereotypes.

When Horizon Zero Dawn was first announced over two years ago, I was mesmerized. The main character being female didn't cross my mind... but then feminists started rubbing their vaginas over my face and acting like this is the first fucking female protagonist to ever be in a game. E3 last year there was this game journo who said "Finally no bikini armor" and I was taken aback. Is bikini armor in the majority of games? How come I never see it? I've seen bikini armor in one game that I've played in the last decade. Gamers did not make an issue of gender with this game, feminists did. They took a game I was excited about and made sure to attach it to hateful rhetoric to the point that I'll buy it from the used bin. Thanks feminists! You saved me some money.

I know this was a few years ago, but I have only just downloaded it myself. In terms of gameplay, I can't really complain. However, the story...When Aloy was a child the story began to draw me in. But as the story progressed I realized that Aloy is the most bland and tepid Mary Sue I have ever come across in a game. As shallow as a puddle in a spoon, not interesting, in fact, her character really started to grate on me. Then all the same 'wamen power', tropes started skulking out of the woodwork. Anti- conservative propaganda in the data logs and women as war chiefs. Men as consistently useless buffoons, with white males as enemies and incompetents, black males as good guys and heroes. Then there is the matriarchs left right and centre with worship and glorification of the monotheistic feminine, basically unheard of. I did not make sense or feel realistic to me that Aloy's society be matriarchal. They are a primitive tribe in a world of danger. If you were to put yourselves in their shoes it fairly obvious that male virtues and male strength and power would be most coveted and useful to such a society. In such primitive settings leadership contests would also be based physical strength, grit, and honour. With that in mind, women in their natural setting would not be able to compete with the men, never mind become matriarchs or establish a matriarchy. It is just so unrealistic and unconvincing. It became clear as the story went on that it wasn't a deep, gripping, and authentic story. It was a power fantasy, with a twist, for ugly feminist women. As a result, narrative nuance and depth was sacrificed in favour of playing out the agenda driven power fantasy. It's a shame because the story started out promising before getting derailed by ideology pushing. The female war chief was the most cringe thing I have ever seen, it just screamed of trying to hard. Her dialogue was so asinine and full of things 'a war chief should say, right guys?' By that point I was completely pulled out of the story and my immersion was broken. As if Aloy's deficit of any discernible character didn't do it first. As I said gameplay is great, but the story ends up being pretty naff for everyone but feminists with an inferiority complex. I am surprised the game got as high a score as it did, no doubt many games journalists were doing, .'favours', for the inclusion of insufferable ideology into the game.

It shall be a good era indeed.

At 12:30, you admit that the reason there are more male protagonists is because more males play videogames. This creates the assumption that people like to play as their own gender, but if that is true then couldn't that be a cause for less women playing video games? They can't have that same connection to their characters, thus making video games seem less appealing to them. P.S. Love your videos, man. Keep up the good work!
@philllllllll

TheDestinedHunter I think he's arguing that companies TRY to market games to specific demographics and make the decision of having male protagonists because they falsely assume it's super important.
@Barren8366
@Barren8366 7 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, but if we are mostly marketing to a male demographic, then could that be the cause for fewer women playing video games? Sure, it may not matter to the consumer if there is a male or female main character, but the fact that this happens shows that games are being marketed to the male gender more than the female gender. This could push away some females who are interested in the gaming community because fewer games are being created with them in mind. I do not blame the companies for doing this, as they are trying to market to the people who will play their games, but I am trying to point out that the way that they do market games can keep women out and men in. If all games were marketed to a woman audience, then there would probably be more women playing games than men.
@philllllllll
@philllllllll 7 жыл бұрын
TheDestinedHunter I think the influence marketing has on a product is vastly exaggerated. I think at best it can inform people that a product EXISTS, maybe even be the cause of a couple sales but ultimately if the product sucks, then it will be known. Fast. Now you are suggesting that maybe the reason not as many women are into video games because the marketing doesn't target them as a demographic. But you're going about it the wrong way. A marketing campaign (a good one atleast) already KNOWS which demographics their product appeals to and they cater their campaign to THOSE people. Because you wouldn't invest a lot of money into a demographic that isn't already naturally drawn to your product. Onto my other point. What do you suggest IS a game "made for women"? To me atleast, games are games. They're gender neutral. They just HAPPEN to attract guys more than girls because of what kinds of stimuli the different sexes generally find appealing. Just take Mortal Kombat for instance. I know plenty of girls who are into the series and love everything about it. But they're a minority of the fanbase. The game doesn't specifically go "Hey guys! Come play this game! Girls aren't allowed because they have cooties!". The devs just made a game they thought was appealing for them and released it into the wild. Then it either sticks or it doesn't. Today, video games are a multi BILLION dollar industry. Big companies make big games with big budgets in the hope of bringing in big money. What kinds of games make the most money? BIG SPECTACLE GAMES. Game launches that are EVENTS. It's basically the same formula as Hollywood. What brings asses to seats in movies? Is it really well done, thought provoking indie flicks? Or is it big event films like The Avengers or Twilight? Here we have a perfect example of something clearly marketed to women. The Twilight series. That made a lot of money, that brought seats into theatres. So has 50 Shades of softcore porn. BUT! So has The Avengers, so has Transformers, so has a bunch of movies that attract men and women alike. Why do I think you don't see that AS MUCH in video game industry? Because women get very attached to characters. You can have a cheap thrill action movie and still have compelling characters that will attract the female audience. But character depth and development is not the video game industry's forte. However, whenever a AAA game gets lots of female attention, it's usually those with compelling, well-develloped characters. And this is what I consider the main reason for why more guys are gamers than girls. Because video games, as a medium, do not require good characters in order to be a good game. Mechanically, you don't even need characters at all. And since games need a lot of money to make, the game mechanics probably take up more ressources. And justifiably so. That means the end product is, usually, more appealing to the male demographic. But! I will end my argument with this: Girls. Young women and teens especially, prefer face to face human interaction as their number one pastime. (after Netflix binge watching) socializing is THE most important thing in their lives. Whereas guys are perfectly content sitting un front of a tv playing a game for a couple of hours. Even better if friends can join in that hobby with them. Shared hobbies is usually how guys make friends in the first place.

Funnily enough, during the bit of this video where Rags is mentioning statistical differences of Genders in some games, I remembered a game called "Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura". In that game, with character creation, gender has a very small statistical difference... Which can also be negated by one of the background options: namely a female picking "tomboy". Funnily enough, I often picked this option, despite there being "better" options.

I've played Horizon Zero Dawn and enjoyed it immensely. That, however, did not stop me from recognising some feminist bents in it. Some which could be explained away, while others felt like it was trying to live up to a feminists wet dream. Example. In many of the recordings Aloy finds you notice a disproportionate number of female soldiers in seemingly high positions. This however can be understood once you advance the plot along a certain point and understand the meaning behind the games name. Won't include anything else as that would be spoilers. More in your face though is the game's portrayal of strong female characters...again in places of power, while men are portrayed as weak, often bigoted, easily manipulated. In the beginining of the game while with Aloy's tribe, the Nora, this is understandable since they are a Matriarchal tribe. but it starts raising eyebrows when you get out into the wider world. Despite all that, it is an enjoyable and fun game. Aloy's no Samus Aran. but she's a close runner up.

*spoilers* Really? So Sun-King Avad is "weak", or Erend, or Rost, or Sylens or whatever don't count?
@RyanEX2000
@RyanEX2000 5 жыл бұрын
@@the_last_chancer The Sun King comes across as whiny and/or shallow as he's first overly focused on finding his lover and then not so subtely offers Aloy her position when she dies. Erend spends his time either flirting with Aloy or being a sappy drunk going on about how much better his sister was and how she had to always look out for him. This is just from first impressions as he does improve AFTER his sister dies and he adopts a more serious role, but first impressions of him weren't what you'd consider the best. Rost kicks ass, plain and simple and went out like a boss. Sylens is what I'd consider the series secret (ingame) main antagonist so he naturally has to be made to be competent or he'd just be your typical Saturday morning cartoon villain. As my main point stated, when you first start playing the game it can be very easy to spot what could be construed as propaganda, but the game does do a good job explaining to you why things are the way there are. It's not the in your face, like it or be ostracised, kind of propaganda, but the kind that's done by someone who honestly loves video games and once to tell a good story from their perspective. Which isn't a bad thing. But then again it could just be people over thinking it which is a sad result of the current climate of feminists claiming that they're oppressed while they wield enough power to ruin people's lives. If that's them being oppressed heaven help us if they actually get power.
