Lots of games journalists are really upset about Cuphead, and some of their articles are just too golden to pass up.

The fact that video games themselves are interactive is already a barrier to entry and will exclude people. Hard games aren't a problem. The issue is being cheated by higher difficulties. Just upping an NPCs health to make them bullet sponges, as well as giving you less ammo isn't a good solution. Make them flank/formulate strategy, have multiple attacks, do more damage, remove map icons and HUD, remove regenerating health... Cuphead is an excellent example of difficulty done RIGHT.

If you ever have the opportunity, I strongly recommend Bloodborne. Just grind 50 levels in the starting area before attempting any of the bossed and you will experience a moderate and somewhat 'fair' difficulty from bosses. And there are a lot of them in the game. I finished the game and a month later had the chance to get the DLC which adds a shitton of content, but I still need to recharge all the juices I pumped into it. XD

I think video games should have one difficulty that matches the vision of the developers, one difficulty that makes things easier and one difficulty that makes things harder (what we have now actually). rebellion force, if you want to experience what the developer wants you to experience then play the normal mode. That is how the game is pretty much meant to be experienced. You say that the enemy having more health is not hard, but what does a developer need to do in order to make things "properly" more difficult? Should they remake the entire boss or come up with new combos just to appease gamers who want a different challenge? Well, it would certainly be nice, but you can't expect the developers to make things different in variety for the only reason of making the game harder. If you want a bigger challenge, you have to understand that the only way to have a bigger challenge is by making the challenge itself bigger, not changing it in any way. To get back to my previous point, Rags pretty much explained all of this in a neat manner, but at the risk of repeating what he said I will now state my own opinion on this topic. If a gamer thinks that in a challenge-oriented game the most important things are the visuals, and I'm not saying that in any way shape or form Cuphead's visuals don't partially make the game as interesting as it is, then the said gamer should watch a youtube video of the said game instead of pressuring the developers to change their vision to accommodate the people who can't "git gud". There is even a simple mode in Cuphead for crying out loud, so his "criticism" is so invalid that I feel it shouldn't even be acknowledged by anyone. It shouldn't even be respected enough to be addressed. One of the things this "journalist" also mentioned was how the game on simple mode strips some of the moves and transformations that the Regular mode has, and the only thing I have to say to that is: yes, that's how it works. What this guy actually wants is for all the moves and transformations to be there, but to have it be much much easier to get through them, so you can feel like you actually accomplished something. I feel like his heart is in the right place: he wants everyone to be able to experience Cuphead in all of its glory no matter how much they suck at the game, but the truth is that games are made to be challenging and, most of all, played. Not looked at. If someone wants to experience Cuphead and all the transformations/attacks, then simply get used to the Regular mode. I feel pretty gay writing this whole fucking paragraph like a fucking loser but it was weighing on my chest ever since I looked into this story, so at least getting this out there feels good.

I'm disabled, I play video games and so don't necessarily start on a level playing field. Since developing my condition I find holding controllers hard and will probably never play a platformer again. The first game I finished was Super Mario World on the snes and I miss Mario quite a bit. Would i enjoy it as much with an invulnerable suit? I doubt it. These days I stick to PC games, mainly mmos, one 3rd person shooter and a moba. I struggle with fiddly aspects of these games but I find an alternative way to do it. I will never raid in an mmo for fear of bringing the team down or getting yelled at. I'm scared one day I will no longer be able to play games but I'm not offended by cup head, I wish I could experience the world of dark souls maybe, but I probably won't, I think different modes are helpful, but they don't have to exist. I'm not short on fun or games, there is plenty I can still do. For now, anyway. Toxicity towards human mistakes is way more of a barrier for me than any game's difficulty. Just my input as someone that is outside of the usual 'gamer' label.

I didn't know that. That pisses me off that people tried to lessen the criteria. The Medal of Honor is THE award of extremely high prestige in the military that's reserved for soldiers who went far and above the call of duty in defense of the Constitution and the United States. It's literally an award for those who are exemplars of honor, bravery, and self-sacrifice, and that's why it holds the respect and value it deserves. To lessen the criteria is like spitting in the face of those that made those sacrifices, displayed honor and bravery of the highest caliber. Not everyone should get this award.

It's gotten to a point now where game journalists seem like out of touch old men who have very little gaming experience, no game journalists seem like people who actually care about gaming and are passionate about it anymore, and this "you should be able to skip bosses" thing to me further proves that. No one objects to easy modes in games, they've been a thing since forever ago, but a "skip boss" button is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard, if you were actually passionate about games, you wouldn't be asking for an option to completely get rid of the challenge, that's like wanting the option to cut out scenes in movies that make you feel uncomfortable, sometimes that's the point.
@nigrum_angelum6655
@nigrum_angelum6655 6 жыл бұрын
yomojoflo there's already a 'skip bosses' buttons, and that is watching someone else playing it aka LPs in KZfaq and/or Twitch. And yeah, the existence of such button would definitely impact gameplay in general. If devs bother making 'skip boss' buttons, why should they even bother making challenging bossfight, at all? The whole point of video games (and games in general) is to play while abiding by sets of rules and system. When you make video games, it's much, MUCH better to make games that YOU want to make, so it would correspond with your *target audience*. That's why Cuphead sells and loved by overwhelming majority of people who've bought and played it. Because the devs knows what they want to make, what they want to play, and they stick to it.
@nigrum_angelum6655
@nigrum_angelum6655 6 жыл бұрын
"Skipping maybe only even a single boss in the entire game is not comprable to not playing the game at all." So fucking what? In many games, some bosses are already optional after all. If a boss is put right where you have to fight them to progress the story/main quest/whatever, then devs put them for good reasons. Can't beat them? Git gud. "Your argument "If devs bother making 'skip boss' buttons, why should they even bother making challenging bossfight buttons, at all?" works just as poorly as an argument like "If devs bother making 'skip cuntscene' buttons, why should they even bother making interesting cutscenes, at all?" for example." That's a retarded analogy. Bossfight is part of the major content of the game, and again, if a bossfight is mandatory then devs put them for good reasons. Meanwhile, cutscenes are either for audio-visual exposition (to attract player's attention to where devs want them) or just some cheap bullshit like forced script where, for example, player character is suddenly ambushed or have something taken away from them. Besides, cutscenes are probably only mandatory the first time you see them, and is skip-able the next time around because only incompetent fucks would make them mandatory every time you see them more than once. Bossfights are something harder to design, and giving players an option to skip them because they can't git gud would push devs to just lazily design them because they have, in the back of their mind, that some people would just skip them. "Yeah and I'm saying some games might benefit from adding a skip option for certain parts of the game to that system." There are many ways to design 'skip' certain parts of the game. Good RPGs, for example, would give you options to skip parts of the game (mostly combat encounters) with the use of either sneak, persuasion, and/or many other myriad of choices. 'Skip bossfight' button, though, is retarded. Again, bossfight are something that's harder to design because devs has to account for boss area, AI behaviour, stats and skills of the bosses, etc etc, unlike cutscenes which is easier to make. Especially since cutscenes take away player's control of the gameplay (unless some QTE or dialogues are thrown in to the mix), of course 'skip cutscenes' button is unquestionable.

Skipping bosses is bullshit, cause bosses them selve are part of the experience. Cuphead is a good example of it. The Bosses in this game transform at a certain point, but you would totally miss out on that if you skip the boss. Or look at Final Fantasy 7, where some boss fights even have dialoge.

Do this to review copies if they choose the easiest difficulty. Add a little watermark or design change so when the journalist bitches on the internet about the insane difficulty and post video/screenshots, they can get called out for being pussies.

Good podcast. KZfaq algorithm brought me here, and I found myself nodding in agreement almost the whole way through. Your articulation is very impressive. When it comes to difficulty in games: Games demand to be experienced, as do most mediums of art, but a difficult game demands to be *understood*. Just as an athlete does not win an Olympic medal without an intimate understanding of their own body, or a chess player does not win a tournament without an understanding of their opponents, a difficult game demands you to pay attention, to engage the left side brain, to *commit*, and to understand what exactly went wrong when failure happens. In demanding you to engage more parts of your brain at once, the game is more memorable. You can become desensitized to pure enjoyment, but things like muscle memory, strategy, skill, pride, and understanding can become etched into your mind permanently, and come flooding back at a moment's notice for the rest of your life. Games which aim for pure dopamine reactions simply can't accomplish that. Whenever I see people complaining about difficulty like this, I can't help but think that they're the kind of person who BS'd their way through school, found ways to pass without understanding the subject material, not realizing that the subject material is sometimes more important than the status, or that they might just be in the wrong field of study. Whatever the case, they've made up their mind that they have more important things to care about, while still expecting all the benefits of having cared.

When Berlin fell, how did our leaders repay us? We returned not to the rapturous welcome...but to suspicion and persecution. In the eyes of our leaders we were already tainted by the capitalist West. Torn from the arms of our loved ones, we found ourselves here... this place... this, this terrible place. Here we have languished, with no hope for release... No hope for justice. We have toiled in Dragovich's mines until the flesh peeled from our bones... We have watched our comrades succumb to sickness and disease... We have been starved. We have been beaten. Didn't know how to kill them or what brought them about. He was just a guy hoping to see girlfriend. And as the series progress he became more of a veteran in terms of maiming grotesque monstrosites with much little reaction to their presence. Hey there Rags. Over the past couple months, I've really enjoyed your content. I've played video games my whole life but this channel has made me care so much more about the gaming community. This might be a little long but I felt like I related personally to this video. If video games didn't have any challenge my entire life would be different. One of my first challenges I can recall from the earliest time of my life is from when I was somewhere between 4-6 years old playing the first video game I ever played, Super Mario World. I quickly got past the first couple levels but as it's supposed to it got harder (a time when a lot of games didn't even half a difficulty setting at all). This was one of the first challenges I had encountered in my young life and got frustrated each time I died, but I'm grateful for my parents who are the type of people that said if you want something, you have to keep working at it. As time passed I got to the final level and eventually beat Bowser and felt so proud of myself that I had overcome this challenge in my life at that time. And to this day I can remember I how I personally felt when I had beaten the game, and started to see the credits roll. I was young, this was before the internet had taken off, no online guides, I just had to dedicate my time and work through my frustration. Life isn't easy and had there been away for me to skip those levels I would have never gotten that self-satisfaction of finishing the game completely on my own. This early life lesson has bled over to all other video games, and even more importantly just my life in general. You might not even see this but if you do-rags I really believe you are an important person in the gaming community right now. My favorite doggo on the internet.

Actually, I don't think developers do understand difficulty. I'm on the opposite side, I think games are far too easy. It seems every new game has simplified mechanics or huge stat advantages for players. As an example, Shadow of War was supposed to be soooo much harder than Shadow of Mordor, but I practically walked through it with one hand and half a mind (I was playing on the hardest difficult too). I think the only times I died was when I got one-shoot by captains. You see the same thing in strategy games. Go back and look at older CIV games and compare the mechanics to the new ones. You have far fewer options than you used to. Compare Endless Space to its sequel. The first one was already extremely simple and they had to make it even more so for the new one. It's so bad, I have to try to lose. When I can set all policy on AUTO and still win, something is wrong.
@MrJayza89

Got Nothing arguably those could be turned into examples of the opposite, the devs probably assume that lowering the barrier of entry to the game via difficulty is going to result in extra sales, civ as an example had many mechanics but newer players could struggle with so many of them, so they make it easier and now more players just may give it a try. I'm not saying it's a good thing, but for business it makes sense. It's just unfortunate for those of us who enjoy a real challenge.

Ok man, take this with a grain of salt, but I'm inclined to not believe your example of Shadow of War. I've played it on the hardest difficulty (just to be sure, you mean Gravewalker right?), I feel like we're playing two different games (or at least on two different platforms). Captains are a big focus on the game, so saying "I only died fighting Captains" could mean you've died over a hundred times since more than 10 captains can respawn after a single mission in one region at a time and they are the main way for getting new items and levelling uo your character. Also, a captain that's a lower level than you can kill you in 2-3 hits and captains can reach MANY levels higher than you. No matter the difficulty setting the mechanics and gameplay of shadow of war can be bullshit to the point where in a lot of encounters you are spamming the dodge button to stay alive. The AI in the game and the hit detection is so bugged that sometimes your character can just spontaneously drop dead because the game doesn't realise the enemy has to attack you to kill you. Also, the Captain's traits can reach some truly bullshit levels sometimes (sometimes they can be really exploitable, but that's the point of gathering intel on them before attacking). I've encountered shield enemies (can't be hit from the front) who are vault breakers, immune to execution, enraged by fire, beast proof, vigilant against stealth, arrow proof, you name it. Let's not even talk about how bugged the game's counter icons can get. I've died multiple times to beserker captains where I've already been killed by the time the icon to dodge (not counter) has shown up, and given that the only reliable way to kill beserker captains who are frost/stun proof is to counter them and knock them to the floor, execute, rinse and repeat, the game refusing to give me appropriate notifications in a speedy manner doesn't exactly even the odds. I will say however that when all the mechanics work well fighting a captain that's a higher level than you is basically an Aragorn vs Lurtz simulator, bith you and the captain are throwing each other around, dodging each other, getting small stabs in, it's really gritty, brutal and awesome and you feel (well I do) like a badass if and when you emerge the victor.

@@TOONYBOY Not to be insulting, but you must not be that good then. It's true that I have fought some captains that had a truly bullshit combination of abilities, but that doesn't make those fight hard; it makes them tedious and that's a big difference. It's been years, but I'm fairly certain I had fewer than 20 deaths the entire game. As I said, the only deaths I really had were when captains with the "No Second Chance" ability would one shot me. It was far, far too easy to regain health in the middle of battle. As long as I didn't get impatient, things rarely went wrong. On a related note: fuck Hunters. Two/three spears were enough to kill you on Gravewalker. Learned early on, KILL ALL HUNTERS FIRST!!!! (Oh, and I was playing on PC.) To further demonstrate games general lack of difficulty, I defeated Harrisi (from Witcher 3) when I was around 20 levels below her on Death March difficulty. True every single hit only did 1 point of damage, but the point is that I still beat her on the hardest difficulty while suffering a massive level disadvantage. To be fair, I did die a few times before I succeeded. As for your skepticism, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do about that. I don't record my game play so I can't prove anything. You'll have to choose to believe or not at your own discretion.

@@cleverwitticismhere6922 Gotta love it when you don't get notified of a response. The only times you can heal on Gravewalker (either that difficulty or Brutal is the one where you only have one life anyway, so ANY Captain could instakill you). It takes several seconds to heal, so in order to be able to heal (assuming you weren't killed in one hit) would be in very specific circumstances where there's an enemy to harvest, but no ranged or nearby enemies to interrupt you, or the AI was feeling particularly lazy and took ages to attack you. We would have to be very specific with how we differentiate "difficult" and "tedious", considering the fact that if there's only one way to damage an officer, but he can one-shot you, and there are multiple enemies constantly interrupting your attempt to capitalize, then that could definitely be argued as unfair. Unless of course, we're not in disagreement of the state of the game, simply the words we use to describe it, since I don't think you would argue that having a one-shot kill captain who switches between counterable and dodgeable attacks, but the attack connects before the appropriate icon has shown up is fair, I would imagine you would sum that up as a bug, not necessarily a flaw with the design of the mechanics, correct?

Brave comrades of Vorkuta, the time has come to rise against our oppressors! Today, we show them the hearts of true Russians! We have all given our blood for the Motherland. We have answered her calls without question. We gave our youth, our hearts, our very souls for her protection. As brothers, we fought side by side against the German fascists. We crawled through dirt and blood and sand to achieve our glorious victory... Not for medals, or glory ...But for what was right. We fought for revenge... But we will not be broken! Today, we will send a message to our corrupt and arrogant leaders. Today, my comrades... Vorkuta - BURNS!!!

this was a joke comment. I made it because when I look at some of the things that games journalists write, I can see similarities between the sjw movement and games journalism. I never said anything in that comment about the idea of a "skip boss button" that was bought up in one (maybe 2) of those articles; though now that you mention I will say that idea is dumb. Cuphead is a game that is pretty much entirely made up of boss fights If games journalists want a skip boss button for the game, they would be happy to know there already is one. Its called the off button on their computer or console. I don't take games journalist or sjws seriously either, by the way. I just like making jokes.

Strange really. Cuphead, an amazing game is slated for it's difficulty yet a game like Dark souls, yet another amazing game isn't? The only thing with these two games that are similar is the difficulty. Amazing how one game has the difficulty as a reason to hate the game and another has people revelling in it. Double standards people double standards. And you can use that statement Rags. See how people explain that away because I can't. Judge games on their merit and what they are, not to focus on difficulty or other bollocks.

Discovered you after binging Mauler content and cruising through efap's backlog. So forgive this horribly, ridiculously late comment, but I felt it warranted mentioning. What I think you overlook in this (completely correct) video is that there has been an ever growing portion of both "gamers" and developers who do not play games for an interactive skill test. They play games for a source of novelty. They don't evaluate a game based on the fundamental construction of its decision making structure within a set of constant rules, as you would for say, a board game or a sport. They evaluate it based on how many times they saw something they haven't seen before and say "Oh, that's neat". They look at a new action game, see that if you press Triangle at the right time you can decapitate someone, and call that "good" design because it was "new" and "fun". Its this novelty that many think is the core purpose of game design, and that is the portion of the game that these game journos think people are entitled to experiencing. In your debate with Major Lee on Battlefront 2 and The Last Jedi, he made it clear on both fronts that this is how he views entertainment. In order to defeat opponents like Rock Paper Shotgun and Major Lee completely, you first have to establish that novelty based entertainment is both subjective and extremely shallow. It is the adult equivilent of jiggling keys in front of an infant. The only reason it holds any interest whatsoever, is it is new input for your brain, not that it is substantive input for your brain.

As someone who has been playing video games since before he could read (Atari 2600 at a year old), this topic really hits home to me. My mother likes to remind me about, as a child, how I would play a difficult game, get frustrated and rage out, stop playing it until the next day, then overcome the challenge and be incredibly happy. I believe this became a frequent thing once I hit 5 years old (the NES era), but I would eventually beat any game my family bought me. Hell, I played some games so many times that I was able to beat them in shorter periods of time (NES Bionic Commando was one such game, where I even proved it to college friends who had thought that game incredibly difficult when I told them how easy I found it). I agree that video games should not be all-inclusive. There are so many games out that options are staggeringly high, and it is incredibly simple these days to research a game before deciding to buy it or not. Despite my history, I am not a very competitive gamer, preferring story/deep character development, puzzle-solving/strategy, exploration, and teamwork (via co-op or, in a pinch, complex party-based mechanics like in Dragon Age: Origins), so I tend towards RPGs like Divinity: Original Sin and Elder Scrolls and adventure games like the Soulsborne series and, once in a while, Tomb Raider. Thus, I buy and play only the games that fit my preference and leave out the competitive multiplayer games like Overwatch - although I do like the teamwork aspect of MOBAs in general - and the (much-despised by me) Call of Duty games. Reducing a game like Cuphead to an all-inclusive game would only lessen the game's worth.

I partly agree on one point. I hate buying a game to find out I can't even pass the starting levels to them be told I can't get a refund. The best way I think that will make most people happy is to release the tutorial level of every game made for free as a demo but have the last part of it act as if it is about midway threw the game so people can see what they are in for. It lets people test it and know if they want it or not it stops them from getting screwed if they hated it and it helps the company because more people are willing to buy from and trust you.

The Devil May Cry series is a prime example of how dangerous this mentality is: It's a Hack-and-Slash game solely predicated on the idea of the player looking and feeling as cool as possible so long as they are skilled with the mechanics, to the point that in every game but 2, it encourages the player to follow this mentality by making every enemy(even bosses) perfect candidates to be humiliated by a player should they be skilled enough. The combat is so focused on being stylish that the player's end score for each mission is partially determined by a "style-meter" which will increase more and more as the player varies their attacks and refrains from being hit(which decreases your style rank by 2). The games have always had a difficulty known as "Dante Must Die," the hardest difficulty... This mode includes remixed enemy placements as well as buffing them and giving enemies the ability to access a "Devil Trigger" mode (a mode the player can access where they are temporarily buffed and heal passively while active) indefinitely until they are defeated. I personally think that DMD is the way the series is meant to be played, but what's important is the REWARD for beating this mode; Super Characters: versions of the characters that the players can then access at any time which gives the player infinite Devil Trigger(while still maintaining a decent bit of the challenge). Super Characters have been a staple as the highest tier of reward the games can give since DMC1, and it would destroy the entire point of even having Dante Must Die mode if the game just GAVE you the REWARD for beating it for nothing, you absolute hack journalists. Stop acting as if it's the DEVS' fault that YOU suck at their game.

Kepora1 What do you mean fine? One freezes you and looks at you with a smile then shoots you in the head while the other emits cute noises while going full ham on his enemies, Overall just barrels of toxicity and hurtfulness

What he wants is a Visual Novel. A game* of pressing next. (*Some have enough choices to count for me)

This idea maybe a little controversial, but the Dead Space story makes a little since as to why it got watered down. The first game you are fighting an unknown enemy by yourself while trying to escape the Ishimura. The second game rolls out and if you are a veteran from the first the enemies aren’t exactly scary because by this time you already know how to kill the enemy. As time goes on, new players will also come to this conclusion as Isaac says something to the effect of go for the limbs. By the time the third entry comes, the enemy isn’t really all that tough and is easy to take down. So I can see the horror getting turned down by quite a bit.

beating the game without playing it is like going to someone's birthday party uninvited, you need to become acquainted with them before you get to celebrate
