No one encapsulates the word "swashbuckling" better than Indiana Jones. Another masterpiece directed by Steven Spielberg, Raiders of the Lost Ark is considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time, and I couldn't argue with that if I wanted to. As always, thanks for watching!

PG doesn't mean kids movie. It means Parental Guidance suggested. PG-13 came out of the gate strong, though. Lots of topless women made it into some early PG-13 movies. It had to be quick, but people noticed. It took a while before PG-13 became what it is now where a film can push the edge of violence or nudity, or language--but never all three if they want to stay in the rating groove.

Also great movie lore about this: They were shooting in Tunisia, and Harrison Ford had dysentery and wasn't feeling well, so the original plan for that battle scene, which would have been three days of filming, had to be shortened. Ford and Spielberg both came up with the idea of ending it quickly with a gunshot.

This series and the Star Wars series are George Lucas' nod to the serial films that were popular in theaters in the 1930''s and 1940's. They were each about 15 minutes long and you would come back each week to see the next part of the story. One story might take 3 weeks to tell, another might take 15 weeks. It might be a crime drama, a western, a war story, an action film, a sci fi film or a romance. It kept the audience coming back to the theaters every week.

My parents took me and my older brother to see this when it came out when I was 5. Five for goodness sake! I remember loving it though and it became one of my favourite childhood films. The melty melty heads scene did freak me out a bit but in a scared but actually having fun kind of way. Most kids are tougher than we think when it comes to stuff like this - it's all about the context it's presented in and this is presented very much as a comic book adventure.

Whimsory kept referring to this film as a kids movie because it was rated PG. PG stands for Parental Guidance, which means there are some borderline graphic elements to the film; therefore it was accurately rated. She kept suggesting it would be traumatizing for kids to watch this without realizing it was never meant for children. It was meant for a more well rounded audience that wanted a fun film with tense moments without it being too childlike. I thought this movie was well made, especially for its time, and has become a classic without a doubt. It’s the best of the series by far. Thanks for the reaction, just remember, it’s NOT for children!

I've always liked Toht as a villain, too -- there are so many nice touches, like the coat hanger scene, or the one where Jones threatens to blow up the ark -- Toht just sits off to the side, bored by the whole thing. @@brianjones8432 I actually really enjoyed the latest one. I'd rank it fourth, just slightly behind Temple of Doom. My biggest criticisms are ones that I have about many movies today: shot way too dark and very little practical effects or stunts. All the vehicle chases are greenscreened with a general motion blur so we won't notice how bad everything looks. It had everything I want in an Indy film: Indy in his hat with his whip, him cracking wise, a "plucky" sidekick/enemy, vehicles chases, and Indy punching N*zis. It just had to be better than Crystal Skull which I loathed (your mileage my vary).

My number 1 film. Able to see it on the big screen many, many times when it came out in '81. Got the full outfit and the gear too. There are only 3 Indiana Jones films, forget 4 and 5.

I believe I was 5 when this came out. It wasn't until the next one that I saw Indy in the theater. But we did rent this on VHS and I loved it. And then my dad recorded it from TV, so we had our own copy. Yes, I'm that old.

Nice work on the research. I love the back story of Indy shooting the guy with the sword. I read about that many years ago and I loved it. I feel bad for the sword guy too but it actually makes a lot of sense in the scene as Indy is fighting off people left and right to get to Marian, and just decides he doesn’t have time for it 😂.

Hey, Whimsory! I loved your commentary as always. FWIW: I always considered Marion to be about 30 and Indy about 40 when this film takes place. (Their actual ages during filming.) That would place their prior romance at around 19/29, which, while noticeable, I think (and I think most people would think) is not problematic.

I watched six reactors to this movie this month and thought the same thing about the dates they were eating. Doesnt look very good. Ordered some from Amazon and now I'm on my 3rd bag. Really enjoy the background info. You put a lot of work into your reaction, watching twice and doing all the background research, and that makes this channel a standout. I mean, some channels' reactors give their thoughts, but you look up a lot of fun stuff. Really enjoyed. Oh yeah, and for the after-movie thoughts, we got to see a new shirt and cap too! :)

PG-13, as a movie buff, you know didn't exist until after the next Indiana Jones. PG-13 was created because the second film was rather scary. Parents needed more guidance than … Parental Guidance alone.

$5,000 in 1936 translates roughly into $110,000 today. She could have gotten back to the US in PLENTY of style. OK, more trivia: PG-13 wasn't invented until 1984 when, coincidentally, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" premiered. Several of the scenes in the movie were considered too strong for PG, like some in this movie, but too light to be considered for an R movie (as you note). Now you understand why those of us raised on this old system are a bit hardier when it comes to sex and violence. We all were exposed in real life things that would cause the modern Mother to have a heart attack. If we didn't come from the rural areas were we got an early lesson of the birds and bees from the farm animals having sex all the time, we were exposed to grievous injuries and/or death from industry, or vehicles.

Ya, former farm kid here. There was never any question as to where babies came from as they were born several times a week and I would help dad move the boars around for, um, dates not to mention being around butchering since you were little. And the games we used to play as kids would make most parents have a heart attack now. 10 years old running around on beams in the barn 25-30'above the barn floor, good times but we tend to be a bit of a different breed. Mum only found out a few years ago the full details of some of the uber dangerous stuff we did as kids.

I saw it in the theater at its release when I was twelve years old, and yes it's everything you might have suspected seeing for the first time on the big screen. Kids were talking about it at school, my own sixth grade teacher started teaching us some things about archaeology and Egyptians..... it was a great time to be a kid. And yes it was 1981 so years off from computer graphics, all effects were practical which made it more believable

"Gilgamesh" for Gimli is the best-educated mistaken name I've ever heard 🙂 To be fair to Indy when he abandoned Marion for the Ark - if it gave the Nazis the advantage they expected then you would have to keep it from them at all costs. PS I think the third film is the best. I don't feel sorry for the monkey, he was a Nazi monkey.

Your description of Indy is spot on. He's not this perfect hero type of guy. He has a shady side but he always ends up doing the right thing in the end. His relationship with Marion is also complicated. You're right, perfectly right knowledge and historical truth means more than anything at this point of his life.

1. Yeah, he is Gimli (and I only have seen him in LotR, Indiana Jones and Sliders, so that are my only impressions of him). 2. Marion Ravenwood is a great character. She is brave, bold and smart. She outsmarts people that are either stronger than her or have the numbers advantage. She also has real weaknesses, what make her human, as well as more relatable, realistic and with the potential of growth. I grew up with a lot of great female characters, including bad ass action heroes (and yes, they existed, not like what Jennifer Lawrence said, that Katniss Everdeen was the first female action hero), that is why I dislike most current female leads. 3. Indi is not a Jerk leaving her there. He was planning to come back, it would have been idiotic to take her with him at that point, the whole camp would have been actively searching for them

Oh my... I saw this and my heart leapt in my chest for joy that you have covered this one! It came out in the year I was born; obviously I didn't see it then but I have come to know and enjoy it since. It has everything: action, adventure, mystery, history, archaeology (though the real life quest for the Ark of the Covenant has been less clear-cut), romance, elation, disappointment, great atmosphere, a compelling story. It is often on here in the UK at Christmas time on the BBC and other TV channels, but it's just as good to watch at any time of year. Harrison Ford created an iconic character - not named in the title of the film, we should note, perhaps because they didn't expect they'd be making a series (let alone one that would have sequels coming out over four decades later with the same actor in the lead) - and everything that happens in this, together with the manner of its execution, set the scene, style and tone for the movies that followed. On that note: Indiana Jones' fear of snakes is explained in the third movie, which is perhaps the best of all the sequels to date (not counting "The Dial of Destiny" which I haven't yet seen) and features more stellar casting. Wouldn't you agreed that the music is some of John Williams' finest work? It is never more so than the 'Map Room' scene. With two unrelated minor chords, he conjures up a sensation of something Biblical, Old Testament, mystical, powerful, exciting, dangerous and awesome - aided by stunning orchestration. The motif, signifying the Ark of the Covenant, is reused to brilliant effect not just in this movie but in at least a couple of the sequels. Hats off to this musical genius!
