Angry Video Game Nerd reviews Raiders of the Lost Ark for the Atari 2600! This was from episode 48 Indiana Jones Trilogy. See the full episode here • Indiana Jones Trilogy ...
The reason to divide some episodes into clips is because, in many episodes AVGN reviews a compilation of games, and sometimes a review will get lost in the mix. Many people still ask James to review Shaq Fu, even though that was done all the way back in 2007 for the Christmas episode "An Angry Nerd Christmas Carol: Part 2". Hopefully, these clips will make finding certain AVGN game reviews easier to find. #mikematei #retro #retrogaming #gameplay #playthrough #livestream #review #nes #snes #matei

Like most adventure games on the Atari 2600, Raiders of the Lost Ark required the player to read the instruction manual to play the game properly. It delivers a lot of info and several tips on how to play, what some of the items do, how to get around, etc. Without it, the game is very cryptic and frustrating. With it, it's very fun and rewarding.

It took me months to figure this game out when I was 9. I think that's a pretty good value, and the process of figuring it out along the way was quite an adventure, with the kind of highs and lows that are pretty rare for an Atari 2600 game. I think it was pretty well done, considering the limitations of the platform.

Very true. I got the updated 2600 in the late 80s and we played California Games to death but also enjoyed trying to beat Swordquest and Raiders. We beat Raiders but it wasn't easy but a lot of fun. We had to buy 2 shovels in case a thief stole one after parachuting in.

This video review is hilarious! I played this game for hours on end as a kid trying to beat it. Even wrote a letter to Atari, and got a letter back but without the answer (I bet that letter is worth something now). Eventually I somehow figured it out.

ericsbuds I had this game and it did have a very descriptive manual. Game was still bloody hard though. I think the manual even guides you through the beginning to bomb the hole in the wall but you had to leave the screen to the marketplace or the grenade would kill you

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. This must've had a massive manual explaining what each of those icons (fuck knows what those icons were supposed to be without each of their designs and intentions being conveyed to the players.

@@ericsbuds The manuals were actually incredibly helpful. I can't seem to post the link without KZfaq doing a weird formatting thing and rendering the link useless, so look up the manual for the game. There seems to be a whole website for manuals for old games.

Beat this as a kid. It was very hard to figure it all out. He didn’t even show the parachute and finding the ark. The parachute was a bitch too. Even when you found exactly where to fall if your timing wasn’t perfect with the parachute you couldn’t guide yourself into the hole in the wall. There was always a branch sticking out above it and if you hit the branch you just fell and died

@fictionalmediabully9830

A well-received game for its time, not a loaf of hot rubbish, and the instruction manual gives you all the information necessary to beat the game casually. It was the early '80s, what on earth were you expecting? Ever played The Hobbit on the ZX Spectrum? It's fondly remembered, and yet it requires both the manual and the book it's based on to properly play it, it even came with a copy of the book.

The fact that this game is so cryptic is great but there's not a lot of common sense used in the execution. The NES era had a good balance of difficulty and beat-ability. You have to remember that people paid 60 dollars for these games so getting their money's worth was very important.

@fictionalmediabully9830 Жыл бұрын
These games had instruction manuals and NES games weren't much less cryptic. Zelda 2 and Castlevania 2 were especially bad at providing any useful information in the game itself. Even as late as PS1 games like the Tomb Raider series, there are a lot of cryptic, unintuitive moments.
