This is a video I'm extremely proud to present and have wanted to film for years. This is the CORP 503 job starting in Glendale Oregon making its way North through the entirety of the Cow Creek Canyon on the Siskiyou Line.
Normally this train is a night run and it is difficult to witness daytime action through this historic canyon. However on this day the 503 job got extremely behind the normal timeframe and they made the second half of their journey from Glendale back to Dillard in the late morning and early afternoon which finally allowed for this video. I just went out on a whim one Friday to see what I could capture and this turn of events took place.
I have had a handful of partial chases through Cow Creek Canyon including one chase of a special train all the way through here but never a full chase of a revenue train from one end to the other. This video is a big victory and a huge check off the list so I hope you enjoy!
These scenes were filmed with the professional DJI Inspire 2 drone and the DJI Osmo Action.

Love that high shot of the train and creek at 11:05 and at 14:24 also. Can almost see the whole train and at 18:59 you can see the whole train. Scenery is just breathtaking. Great job as always Dan, Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ken! This is quite the rare video as when this train is on schedule it is a middle of the night run. They are so late in this video the schedule is almost flip flopped.

I grew up in this area and have spent a lot of time in that canyon. I've seen historic photos of the flat area in the drone shots of the West Fork, and it used to featured a hotel and stables, and a turntable. West Fork was the unloading point for mail, cargo and passengers heading over the mountain via mule/horse pack train into the Rogue River Canyon to the south. Mail to most of the canyon was eventually contracted out to jet boats, which is why some of the jet boat tours upriver from Gold Beach are called Mail Boats. I am enjoying seeing that country from the air in your drone shots. The best swimming hole on Cow Creek is below Tunnel 7, and is aptly named, Tunnel 7!

Well thanks a lot I'm glad you enjoyed and thanks for all the info! I had heard a lot of that history and it is really neat that it was a bustling place at West Fork back in the day.

@@TheRailfanDan My 90yo dad still lives in Glendale. As a kid he took me to meet with a old guy he knew in town who was a retired railroad maintenance guy for the Southern Pacific. I wish I had his old book of photos, it was pretty amazing! His forearms were all scarred from bad burns he received when he and his crew got caught in the tunnel by a cab-forward steam locomotive-led train at Pengra Pass over the Cascades. All they could do was duck and cover - I'm not sure if the whole crew survived. I also wish I had recorded those conversations! Again, thanks for posting these videos, they are very well shot and produced. I like having them running on one screen while working on another!

Nice video Dan. That area has been hammered by wildfires in the past few years. The area by Glendale was burned in 2013 by the Dads Creek Fire, after a bit of green the train enters the Rabbit Mountain fire of 2013 (the area around the west fork of Cow Creek), and finally after a small patch of green it enters the Horse Prairie fire of 2017.

Hi Dan; This is your usual spectacularly beautiful film. That almost makes it sound matter of fact. But I know from personal experience that this sort of aerial filming is anything but easy. You make it look easy, but it isn't. The mark of a truly professional cinematographer. I have mentioned to you before about the quality of your audio tracks. Spot on !! James.

Thanks again Ken! This video was a massive check off the list for me personally. I've wanted to get a full chase of a revenue train through the whole 30 miles of the canyon very badly but being a night operation I had to be extremely lucky to be out there at just the right time when they would fall behind schedule enough.

Ever the master at work. Two thoughts that I had during the experience that I wanted to share. The first was about the fire damage and its appearance during that segment. I thought the area would have looked just as blasted just after the railroad had been built through the canyon because the builders would have needed vast amounts of wood for ties and other needs and there were the trees just ripe for use. The other was how excellently Hood and his crew used the creek's route for their struggle through the mountains. Just as epic as when he got through the Tehachapis. And the worst was yet to come in the climb over the top before Ashland! I was wondering if that road paralleling the creek was the original highway 99 back in the day. Thank you so much for your work in making this treasure of a video.

Would they have used pinewood for sleepers (ties)? Being a softwood I would have thought that it wouldn't have been suitable.

@@hcrun Back then they weren't building for quality, but for speed. They were in a race to meet up with the Holliday forces building south from Portland, to join in Ashland. After freight income was generated SP could always come back and retie the route with lasting construction.

Great video Dan! I just read Matt Mattioda's comment about all the wildfires that have been in the area that 503 Job passed through. The drone shots were great. I really like this video. I get to see landscapes in your videos that I will probably never see in person. Thank you for bringing these trains and scenery to us!
