The D&S Has "8" operational steam locomotives All are 2-8-2s.; 4 are Baldwins built in 1925, rated 36,000 lbs at the drawbar. They have 3 ALCOs built in 1923, rated at 28,000 lbs at the drawbar. Then they have 1 Baldwin from 1905 that started out as a standard gauge but was converted to a narrow gauge in the early 20th century. As a standard gauge it was rated at 50,000 lbs at the drawbar, but was de-rated to 37,000 lbs after the narrow gauge rebuild. All the engines have been in continuous service since their build dates. The enclosed passenger cars were all built in 1881-1882, but of course have been updated on an ongoing basis. 5 engines have been converted to oil burners for environmental and fire hazard reasons; Colorado is a dry state and range fires are always a consideration. In 2019 the White Pass and Yukon railroad offered to sell some or all of their DL535 narrow gauge diesel locos to the D&S when they were replaced by new motive power. Four were purchased by the D&S, 1 for parts and 3 for yard and miscellaneous service. The 3 in use have all been refurbished and used for both yard work and also one train per day to Silverton. As we all know, diesels are much cheaper to operate than steamers, and the D&S has taken advantage of this by powering its daily (in season) 8:15 train with a pair of the 1200-HP DL535s. In return for taking a ride on a diesel-powered train, the passengers are given a $10 discount per person. For a family of 4 (husband, wife, and 2 kids) that's a savings of $40. Also, some people do not regard it as significant that they're being pulled by diesels instead of steamers. The 9:00 train to Silverton typically uses a double header steamer consist, as there are several substantial uphill grades on the outbound leg. The return leg is downhill, so the lead steamer is detached in Silverton and sent back on its own. There is a shorter trip, about halfway to Silverton, to Cascade Canyon, for those with children having a short attention span, or who want the steam train experience on a shorter trip. It leaves at 9:45 and is back at 3:00 PM. This shorter trip does include most of the truly spectacular parts of the trip, including the high-line and the Cascade Canyon / Animas River portion. The first Silverton train is back at 5:30PM and the 2nd is back at 6:15. For both, there's a 2-hour layover in Silverton, so the passengers can get a good meal in one of the town's restaurants, and also some souvenir shopping. NOTE: (I live in Durango, and am very proud of both my town and the D&S Railroad. I did work in their warehouse one summer and got exposed to a lot of the operational information about it.).

@@JamesU56 no this was filmed on the 29th 30th and 31st of may also I'd prefer that it was pulled by one of the steamers but the diesel that pulled your train is one of a hand full of surviving narrow gauge alcos this one use to be the white pass and yukon in Alaska
