In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view along the Stubai Valley Railway (Stubaitalbahn) between Innsbruck and Fulpmes in 4K/60 frames per second.
The Stubaitalbahn (Stubai Valley Railway) is an 18.2 km long narrow gauge (1000 mm) interurban tram from Innsbruck to Fulpmes in Tyrol, Austria. In the city of Innsbruck, it uses the local tramway tracks. At the Stubaital station, the branch line-rated part begins. The meter gauge track starts at Innsbruck's Main station, crosses the Wilten district, and passes the villages of Natters, Mutters, Kreith, and Telfes. Between the Stubaital station and Fulpmes, the railway is single-track, but at nine stations: Sonnenburgerhof, Hölltal, Mutters, Nockhofweg Muttereralmbahn, Feldeler, Kreith, Telfer Wiesen, Luimes, Telfes, there are passing loops where the train usually uses the left-hand track. The final station, Fulpmes, has three tracks and one depot.

Really amazing. Österreich hat wunderschöne Eisenbahnstrecken. Das ist ein schönes Beispiel einer landschaftlich hochinteressanten Lokalbahn. - Austria has beautiful railway lines. This is a beautiful example of a local railway with a very interesting landscape.

Operational note from 50 years ago, when this railway was still separate from the Innsbruck tram network: that last slope into Fulpmes was used to shunt the passenger trailers by gravity, no need for loops to run round for the return trip \m/

The first time I rode on the stubaitahlbahn (1972) I had to travel accross town to the Stubaihof and wait for the tram there. The ticket was torn like a page out of a large book and according to how far you were travelling the page was skillfully trimmed by tearing strips off that page by the conductor. If the conductor was lucky his ticket book had well marked perforations to follow. If you were going the whole length od the line you ended up with the whole page.

I travelled this line about 8 years ago in a vintage tram and in deep snow. A truly amazing journey not to be missed. Such gradients and countryside. I would like to know how they control movements to prevent “cornfield meets”.

als ich 1966 und 1967 als Kind mit den Eltern im Sommerurlaub im Stubaital war, rumpelten auf dieser Strecke noch Züge mit Holzaufbau aus Vorkriegszeiten entlang, vielleicht sollte ich den dazu passenden FIlmausschnitt aus dem 8mm Urlaubsfilm von damals mal hier einstellen...

Trains don't stop for traffic lights. But trams do. Within the city the Stubaitalbahn operates as a tram and thus has to follow road traffic rules.

Well that was a bit different, real cliffhanger from leaving Innsbruck. The valley route, which is the usual way for a railway must have real bad obstacles? Hence the high level route taken.

Anmscheinend gibt es in Innsbruck keine Ampelvorrangschaltung für die Straßenbahn.

Richtig, leider bis heute nur teilweise... 😔 Die Bahn muss sich die Straße in manchen Abschnitten mit dem Autoverkehr teilen. Innsbruck hat sehr enge Straßen. Es würde nur helfen die Autos komplett zu verbannen. Vielleicht kommts irgendwann... 😊

It _a_nnounces (announcment in German is "Ankündigung") that the light is going to turn green soon. This is for traffic lights that are controlled by an approaching tram so that a) the driver knows his vehicle has been registered by the system and b) if there is a station that he should close the doors as to not miss the green signal.

Entschuldigung, aber das MUSS sein. Die Berufsbezeichnung ist richtigerweise Lokführer oder Triebfahrzeugführer, ein Zugführer ist der Chef vom Zug und hat mit dem fahren überhaupt nichts zu tun und kann das auch gar nicht.

somehow I never realized how much of a concrete wasteland Innsbruck is... particularly for a city governed by the "green" party They should start cutting half of all roads and parking lots and replace them with some greenery...
