Why do trains need to go so ridiculously slow, though? The big freight ones are understandable, but the passenger ones and the ‘litorinas’?

I like the atmosphere of side railway lines with old semaphores and stations that look (almost) the same as the tracks were built. The downside is slower speeds, whether it's the condition of the tracks or the geometry. Here the latter does not occur at all because the line is practically straight, which would allow to increase the speed, but it is probably not profitable.

Around 54:45 you see several backyard incinerators. We used to have those where I live, but stopped using them 60-70 years ago. I wonder if they still use them here. edit: Nice to see a monorail. We're building one where I live. It will also connect the airport to the trains. It should be done in about 5 billion years, just as our sun dies out.

Another very long train journey... with wonderful pictures, especially the cloud formation at the beginning, which was probably dissolved by the rising sun 😊👍 The landscape is not so interesting, but the many semaphore signals are still there 🤗 - I find it interesting that at most stations these only serve as entry signals, in the stations themselves there are usually no signals next to the tracks! This long railway line is not very busy either: in the almost four hours there was only ONE train crossing, but it is still commendable that this is being modernized - in earlier years, like all over the world, rail traffic would have simply been rationalized away without any care... Best wishes 🖖

One general comment on your videos of non-electrified Croatian lines. Services, both passenger and freight, seem to be very sparse. At least on this trip we did at OTOK pass a heavy freight train, mostly but not entirely containers. How often does this train run, and where in Bosnia does it start from? There seemed to be very few passengers on our (ex-Swedish Railways} diesel railcar. European Rail Timetable table 1358 shows 4 train pairs Mondays-Fridays, 2 on Saturdays and 1 on Sundays.
@ZvonimirZelenika4 күн бұрын
Most of these recordings are made on weekends when there are even less trains and especially less passengers and cargo, but yes - some of these local and regional lines have very little services and little passengers (primarily high-school kids and students as they have free tickets). Cargo train can be either from Tuzla or Brčko - Brčko District has a special status in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is knows as a bit of a free trade zone.
@Fan652w4 күн бұрын
@@ZvonimirZelenika Thank you for a very comprehensive reply! Another striking feature of the more rural Croatian lines is the large number of staff they employ at stations to control just a few trains!
@ZvonimirZelenika3 күн бұрын
@@Fan652w Oh yes - level of automation is horrible. What has happened over last several decades is that railway Unions were very powerful and they blocked/slowed down many technology transformation and modernization projects, too keep up the employment (last example is signalling of line to Split, where they are installing new system for last 20 years). But ironically, over last 5-10 years unemployment in Croatia went down significantly and Railways is finding it hard to recruit new people (especially for menial jobs like switchman/pointsman, station dispatchers, track inspection) and existing operational workforce is (rapidly) growing old - so they will have to push for a rapid modernization and automation.

Le FIAT resistono ancora in Croazia. Here in Italy the last railcars FIAT have the months counted now. But are the engines of these railcars still those of Fiat or have they been replaced?
@ZvonimirZelenika4 күн бұрын
These trains were built in early 1980s for Swedish Railways (SJ) and 20 pcs were purchased by Croatian Railways in 1996 with additional 11 being purchased later (in Croatia they are classified as Series 7122). Probably they saved passenger transport on many of these local lines, as HŽ was pulling out old 7221 "šinobus" railcars and had nothing else to replace them. They have been refurbished over the years, they are still going for maintenance so they will operate probably for next 5-10 years as Croatian Railway does not have money to replace them and EU funds won't finance diesel vehicles (there is a plan to replace them on *some* lines with battery-powered or battery-electric trains for which they can get EU funding). What is available on Wikipedia says they still have FIAT 8217 engines, though I can't confirm if engines have been replaced during refurbishments.
