NGL, it’s kind of an ironic name for a place where these locos and rolling stock are rusting away. The only thing that’d make it less so would be if we had a chance to salvage and restore them to, at the very least, a good static display condition, if not a full working one.

THis locomotive is a partially restored 4-8-4 "Niagara" (pronounced "Nee-A-Garra") pruchased from Nacionales de Mexico. The plan to restore it to service has been start-stop since the sixties, but it is in no way abandoned or heading to scrap. Please stay off it and never remove anything from a steam locomotive except rust and weeds.

Man, If I didn't know better, (and I'm NOT 100% sure of that), but it's definitely an Alco build, (1942). Rather I'm guessing it's an old GTW U3b Northern. The pilot and rear trucks are exactly the same, but the tender throws me and shows an 8 wheel "buckeye" wheel configuration, (GTW had 6 wheel) and may belong to another loco. At any rate, GTW AND NdeM worked off the exact same blueprints. Any thoughts out there?

well at least its not a lone survive. A lot of the Mexican Niagras still exist, and thankfully many of them are in an aesthetically pleasing state. They're one of the most attractive classes of North American steam I'm aware of. Be great if one was brought back into service and toured but beggars can't be choosers.

You'd honestly be better off donating the money to an existing group that has a charitable status then using that to lower the overall tax burden on your other winnings... buying it involves paying tax on the winnings and then buying it which may also attract some tax given the size of the purchase then also you have to pay liability insurance associated with it. Take that lottery money as instalments as well and donate enough funds to generate excitment in numerous projects as well, over time of course. But that say 100k donation you could make now and then is often the sort of funding projects need to get the attention of the public to get them interested in it. "Headline local news of $100k donated to project: town asked to help with rest" is always good. Now if only I could give you advice on winning the lottery

Only that niagra steam locomotive in the beginning is completely inoperable. The 8212 runs fine and and 7210 is an ongoing project. It's at LEAST a million to refurbish and inspect a steam locomotive in GOOD condition. Most of the passenger cars need a complete rebuild, at LEAST half a million there. Millions of dollars just for those few train cars there, and no real way to generate that much money to pay for it all.
