Shoestring was my friend. The day I took that picture at 01:21 he dropped his cellphone and broke that small tripod he was carrying. I miss him.

Well back in 1930's my Grandmother was a widow with six kids in Iowa lived next to the rail car yard and burned wood in the stove .My mother said that there house was marked for the HOBO'S they could go and chop wood for the Widow with 6 kids and she would feed the Hobo. 2 years ago i found Shoestring on KZfaq and maked me think of my Grandma and 6 kids So Shoestring i'am sure she would have had a plate of food for you as well thank you for your storys 🙏🚂🤔🇺🇸

Thanks, Sara. My grandfather was a Hobo. He rode from 1920 (after the war) to 1951 (when health issues began). He was a polite man, tons of stories and never in my sight got angry.

I believe it gets it's name from the old old timers who were headed out to california. Land of sunshine and easy work, always some way to get fed and find a roof. The old farms and small businesses. Pickin' fruit, paintin' barns, maybe wearin' a sign board for the local diner or barbershop in exchange for a few nights in the apartment upstairs. The west was where people needed hands, and good hands are worth a few benefits. Not SURE if that's where the name comes from, but it would be my guess.

He lived a very hard life but he got to live his dream. I would defiantly not recommend fallowing in his foot steps. It is extremely dangerous and It's illegal....

A tramp dreams as he wanders. Get it right. I never met this rider. I wish I had. I did about 25000 miles riding the rails. I am still wanted in Georgia for trespassing on the railroad. I thought I was the super tramp until I saw Hobo Shoestring's videos.

I've made plans on hopping a train in memory of Mark Nichols (Hobo Shoestring) something I've wanted to do since I was a kid. I'm a freelance photographer who travels and sells prints. I just hiked a 18 mile abandoned railroad with my 40 lb backpack and I slept in a hammock.

Sorry you feel that way friend, but I can assure you it was real. I feel heartbroken for any life lost. This was done in memory of a great man and hobo, not for likes or attention or anything. This is to remember a soul taken too soon.
