Nice detective work, Roli. One of the reasons I model 1962 on my HO layout is that there were still plenty of industrial spurs then, alhtough not as many as 40 years earlier. When I explored rails in the early 60's as a kid I found lots of abandoned sidings even in my smallish home town. There are no signs at all of those now. Cheers from Wisconsin!

If only we had a time machine to have been there when trains were in their hey day. The same happens to many products, newspapers, cash, cashiers, etc. Luckily, there are some active spurs still around that we can appreciate. Thanks as always for the support of my channel and I hope you have a great week, Andrew!

Great finds! This reminds me of a small brick alley in Ybor city where a Cuban cigar factory was repurposed into a restaurant, and there is still a segment of cart rails in the bricks. The scientologists own the property now sadly and you can't get near it. But as a kid in the 90s it was my favorite spot

The city I live in is like that. There are dozens of tell tale signs where the old rails used to be, it's kinda cool to stand and imagine the trains coming thru and exchanging the full cars and putting empty ones back in❤

@@railrol82 Not that I am aware of Roly, there was a mass closure of quaint country branch lines around 50 years ago. Many have been changed into nature walks, some became preserved railways. I am not aware of any abandoned spurs but I am in London, albeit on the outskirts, so most survived around here.

Yes us railfans will always have memories of abandoned rails. If a person looks carefully like you did, there is usually some sort of item left behind to bring back time. Might be a rail or a grade left. Thanks again.

Fantastic work Railrol! It’s appalling that something like 50 or 60 miles of line are ripped up for every mile of new track laid! Aside from Brightline, you have to go to Brazil to see new rail routes being built! Or Asia or Africa!

That's an interesting statistic, Armando, I'd never heard it (50/60:1). That's practically half. As for Brazil, and going abroad... I'm not a big fan of 3rd world countries. Much of the freight that would have come to these businesses directly by rail now comes in trailers(or containers drayed on chassis). Even liquids that would have arrived in tank cars are now unloaded at some other site and trucked to their final destination. Or those businesses moved-or closed.

Unfortunately, Chicago is part of the rust belt and manufacturing is less than a quarter of the economy. The presence of railroads is primarily as a hub for freight to change directions and carriers. And while Chicago likes to pretend it's a tourism destination, it's primary economic industry is service. But even that is waning as overseas call centers and the closure of financial trading markets have had an enormous negative impact. In fact, Illinois has a debt of 65 billion dollars and a public employee debt of over 530 billion dollars. That's about $110,000 for every soul stuck in Illinois. There is NO WAY they will ever come up with that shortfall. And when they can no longer make pension payments it'll be the first statewide county by county chapter nine municipal bankruptcy filing in history.

"She's probably a liar." 🤣 I love this stuff. I watched a video the other day about my city (Toledo), showing the (then) newly built Port of Toledo (late 1950's or so), and it has a lot of interesting rail information, including a map showing all the lines that used to come into Toledo, largely because of our deep-water port. Sadly, it has declined significantly as well over the years. Our once great companies like Libbey Glass and Champion Spark Plugs have either shrunk, or outsourced. Great video. This is true railroad archaeology, probably my favorite part of being a railfan. Thanks, bro! Link to Port of Toledo video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h8B5gNGIxranc6c.html

@@railrol82 Very, very much so, senor. Plus, it was a hub between Chicago and New York (and everything in-between, plus South the Cincinnati and the Ohio River, and North to the St. Lawrence Seaway via the Great Lakes. It's an agricultural center, as well as industrial. Or at least, was a lot more than it is now. And my pleasure, mi hermano!

@@robertscharlow 25 some years ago was with a friend en route to Eastern Ohio and he insisted upon stopping by Tony Packo's which was a good lunch and souvenir stop but also got to see the remnants of the old Toledo Edison 1920s style power plant and not too far away I understand the Nabisco plant has fallen to the Wreckers ball. I saw a couple Plymouth locomotives doing the saltine crackers switch. The port of Milwaukee is in the same boat with very little rail activity. I believe there are now less than 50 rail customers in Milwaukee County on both CP and UP combined. Thanks for the Toledo port hookup

Hey Roli! Check out this vid that shows that crossing on West 8th with the tracks still in the street in the mid 90’s. Scroll up to the 10:00min mark. I remember those tracks in that area.
