The Tarka trail has two separate Preservation Societies one at Torrington and the other at Bideford,both have a loco plus a few wagons and a coach serving some refreshments to the cyclist that use the old track bed as a cycle path.Both Societies have the same goal and that is to run trains for the visitors to Devon.The railway would be a massive tourist attraction for the area.The Torrington end are planning on laying about a 1/4 mile of track as soon as plans have been passed.The Bideford end has a short length of track but this looks very over grown and unused but I have seen on there web site that they did have open days and give visitors train rides.

Wonderful to see they are starting to develop this venture Chris, interestingly, 'Planet' used to work at Machen Quarry near to Newport in South Wales in the early 1980's...Bob

They plan on laying some track at Torrington in the near future.I liked the Planet loco Bob,we have one at the near to us Rocks by Rail.......Best wishes Chris.

Know this area well Chris and you have ably highlighted the massive problems and future plans.Lets hope Torrington can make a start inthe not too distant future.Geoff

Interesting video! It will be fantastic if they could get this line up and running as a child. I remember visiting both sites back in 2000 and seeing the abandoned Great Torrington Miniature Railway which I did have a ride on in the early 1990s. I thought at one point they were doing break van rides at Bideford but from your video it doesn't look like there is much evidence of that.

They have working engines at both ends.I was told about a two weeks ago they do give short rides at Bideford on special days.

It will be great if they can get these two places up and running in the future....i wonder if they'll manage to link Bideford with Torrington once again...hmm....Looks like everything's in it's infancy.....Nice video Steve.-:)

I don't think it will ever come off,well not the whole way alway, how do you get a railway and a single track railway through the single track tunnel.Such a shame because this and the Lynton & Barnstaple railway would be a great tourist draw.......Regards Chris

Just amended my comment Steve it should read --how do you get a single track railway and a cycle path through a single track tunnel! --IIf you go on Google and then go to road ground level you can drive along the track/cycle path..... Cheers Chris.

We have friends at nearby Northam Chris but it's been a couple of years since we took a look at this project. I cannot honestly remember if it's changed much but would be a great asset to the area. A nice look around but a long way to go... Brian.

Apart from the cafe/museum in the coach at Bideford everything looks neglected,such a shame as it could be a great tourist attraction to the area.......Regards Chris

Both ends now have short sections of track and useable locos. The Bideford end is now offering rides on their short bit of track on some days too

Should make for a great Tourist attraction when (and if ) it all gets a big dose of TLC and a lot of Volunteers ...but could make for a nice little Railway ...Dave

Fascinating that there are still so many of these schemes that I never knew were there before. You 're doing a very good job of publicising these places, sometimes better than they do themselves. I do like those little Fowler, I think, diesels with the steam loco like chimney.
