Maybe we can add to this. Great video though! We do it a bit easier for us old folks but your concept is good! Take a piece of paracord about 2 1/2 times the height of the barrel. No need to cut the cord, just make sure you have enough. In the very middle of that length of cord, tie on a 2 inch flat washer. Larger, if your mount is bigger. Just use a tight half knot so it doesn't slip around. You can untie it later. Anything you use must be larger than the inside mount. Next slip cord inside the mount, do not tie on! Be sure it is facing AWAY from large washer. The washer is what will hold the inside mount up against the inside barrel wall. Now, at the very end of the cord, on the side of the inside mount, tie on a smaller washer or nut that can go thru the new hole on the bottom. Drop small washer and cord into barrel but leave inside mount and large washer on top of barrel until you get cord & small washer out the new hole or your inside mount will fall off the cord! We used a magnetic wand to grab the small washer and pulled it thru the new hole. You could make a wire hook also. You can take off the small washer if it will not go back thru the inside mount, you just need to be able to pull that cord out the bottom hole to pull the inside mount into place. Ok, now, pull the cord out from the bottom hole all the while also holding onto the top cord and drop the inside mount and large washer into the barrel [great to have help here). Pull the mount and large washer down into the barrel. Hang on to that top cord... you have to pull it back out! Keep pulling the bottom cord and it will pull the inside mount into place and the large washer will hold it there. Hold bottom cord tightly while you screw on the outside mount. You will have to slip the cord inside the mount washer. Tighten but do not break anything! Untie the small washer and pull the upper cord up and out along with the large washer and you are done. We like using paracord because we don't have to worry about it breaking. Good luck!

Can’t see why you would even try the later method on a large tank. Tried to climb in but my shoulders wouldn’t fit. Previous owner put the bulk head on outside, then I thought he must of done it wrong as it’s impossible to get that screw on. Glad I watched this to confirm.

Putting the shaft portion of the union inside the barrel reduces the stress on it when using heavy connectors and valves. My use is for watering plants and I use several valves that are heavy. These would easily crack the union if used with the union turned the other way.

@@geartechreview4370 it took me 5 min to feed the shaft down to the hole. I’m glad I did it this way as T-piece ect made it heavy load. So, as you say, less stress. I figured this was the case.

I found it is easier for me to fish out the string with the barrel turned upside-down and I drop the string with a weight attached into the hole I just drilled. I pulled the string up and let it dropped and generally the string fell out of the opening at the bottom after a few times.

Thank you for that. Very nicely demonstrated. I have, in the past, cut the hole for the downpipe wide enough for me to get my arm down, holding the nut in a vice-grip. I've also fitted the barrel upside down with the tap fitted through the barrel's bung/cap and drilled a hole in the barrel's bottom (now the top) for the downpipe. But no more messing about. This is the way to do it. Much thanks.

Now how do you take this fitting out when you need to replace a cracked washer? That’s the predicament I’m in…
@geartechreview4370
@geartechreview4370 Жыл бұрын
Pull outward on the fitting white turning it might work. It will put friction on the nut holding it somewhat still. You could also use a long stick to go inside the barrel and hold the nut still while turning. This might require a second set of hands.

Would garden hose fit that threaded part or what kind of threaded I need to get? I am not familiar about threads. I was going to build a stand like deer stand. Not sure how high. I just want to put plastic trash barrel on the stand and fill up with city water to evaporate chlorine out few days then water my garden from it. Should I put hole on the side or bottom. It is just for gardening purpose.
@geartechreview4370
@geartechreview4370 2 жыл бұрын
the bulkhead fitting has female threads that accept a male spigot. The spigot has garden hose threads. Putting it on the side allows you to sit the barrel on something flat without worrying about where the spigot will need to be. I use these spigots/hose bibbs or something similar www.lowes.com/pd/AMERICAN-VALVE-Brass-Quarter-Turn-Hose-Bibb-with-SS-Handle/1000598301

@@geartechreview4370 thank you so much...you were helpful. My garden pots is above the ground just high enough to put dish pan underneath to collect water over and over again like recycle water. I need to build couple of stands to put trash barrels on it for water and your video here how to put fittings on were very helpful. My above ground pots are about knee lenght so how high should I build the stand. When I do that., would water be easy to come out? Thank you so much. I not worry about water pressure as I would slowly water my pots anyway.

I didn't include sizes since viewers may purchase something different than what I used. The union I used was a 3/4" unit ( amzn.to/3xA4O56 ) and I used a 1-3/8" paddle bit (1.364 / 34.64 mm actual size), but a hole saw will will as well.

@geartechreview4370

The bulkhead comes in different sizes. The spigot size must match the bulkhead size. But overall, the bigger the better in terms of pressure and flow. Larger sizes are also much more expensive. Personally, I chose 3/4" and have stuck with it to eliminate needing multiple sizes.
