Taking the 1991 Land Rover Defender 110 HCPU out into the backcountry for an adventure for the first time in a while! More often than not, the sun is shining in the Sonoran Desert, but last week, my travels coincided with a weather system that happened to be passing through southern Arizona. Alas, the desert is no less beautiful on rainy days, and adventures all the more memorable.

Big time Apache country! On a recent trip through southern Arizona, my wife schooled me on those saguaro cactus 🌵. They don’t start to grow “arms” until they are 75 to 100 years old. Fascinating landscapes.👌

Love the truck. Although Orangie is king of the off-road, the truck gets down to basics. Much like us week-end-warriors who have owned trucks most of our life, the 110 is basically a get-in-and-go experience. Glad to see you back on the trail.

A nice simple hood on the back from exmoor trim in the uk and some interlocking garage mats on the bed floor to take the cold off the aluminium and then a cot or mat would make this the perfect overnight rig without the hassle of a tent

Your Defender screams at 70?! I have a 1966 S2A that at 55 sounds like it’s launching into orbit ! Lol But in low range it will chug along and go anywhere. Still love my Jeep JKU though.👍

Great stuff Chris. A very enjoyable bimble in wonderful scenery. It’s great to see the Landy Rover stretching its legs with adventure a foot. It does not need to be fancy, it will take you to many places and make you smile. Preventative maintenance is as always key, along with a jump pack.

What about a small 3mx3m (umm that's about 19/257ths of an American football field isn't it?) pop up Gazebo to throw into the back of the tub when you go out? And a chair. That way you have somewhere to sit out of the weather instead of cooped up in the tent all afternoon/evening. Quick to setup/packdown in less than 5 minutes. Great little trip this week!

Have you ever thought about getting your ham radio lenience? I have one and never worry about cell service. I think it is a good idea for you since you are off the beaten path so much. I think you have GMRS that is only good for a few miles and g\GMRS is not a common thing for others to have. It is easy to get your Ham Ticket.

Definately the problem with a standard.... Trying to film and shift at the same time. Then someone calls you on the CB to. ... What kind of future plans do you have for the Defender, set up wise. Thinking one of them box frame thingies and attach an awning? Or a canvas back? Curious as to the ideas rattling about the brain. The rainy day made me think of that.

At this point just getting ahead a little on the upkeep is my main concern. Beyond that, I’m not planning to lean much into the comfy-camping side of a build. I’d like a nice, cushy suspension, a winch, locking differentials, air compressor, good tires (check) and general upkeep. I’m enjoying the simplicity, and have two other vehicles that can check the box on the comfort factor. Getting out in the truck, as dead simple as it is, is such a blast. I don’t consider it an “overlandy” vehicle and likely won’t unless and until something changes drastically with my current quiver.

It’s definitely time for a solid stay in the shop to work out some front end gremlins I can’t shake. And mayyyyybe a small transmission issue…hopefully 🤞🏻 not though.

The JK has its obvious attractions, but there is definitely something to be said for the Defender's rugged capabilities... I'm curious, is 1st gear a crawler gear? Seems like it would be great for climbing just about anything in 4L and 1st gear. What it lacks in comfort and bells/whistles it makes up for in ability to get into (and out of) tight spots, utility, and off road capability. Looks like a lot of fun!

Yes, there has been a comment or two by a previous owner on insta - I believe he’s a welder so I assume the truck had a good long hard working precious life :)
