I’m gonna be honest the author might of projected their own traumas and stresses onto Minkie. From what sounds like projection of religious trauma, to venting through Minkie… yeah.

The biggest thing that frustrated me with this series is how the bakers always won. The last crusade was especially frustrating because Sweetie and Scoots worked so hard and it would have been so satisfying to see Sweetie taking revenge like she was planning to. Like you can’t just make the bakers win every time it’s bad story telling. It makes them less engaging

I've known the author of Muffins since 2014, so I'm unfortunately a witness to the said drama and how dangerously easy it is to set her off. I think she's going to get mad at this and will try to do something about it. Good luck.

I feel like after being pressured for literally months to continue writing, the author said "Yeah fuck this" and just made it absolutely insane. The writing compared from the middle chapters to the last chapters are very clearly different and it's obvious the author was under insane amounts of stress at this time yet people kept begging and pushing them to do more. The last chapters feel more like a "fuck you." to the people who pressured her than actual entries to the series

my fave grimdark rarity fic was The Secret Life of Rarity, its about how she becomes a serial killer to protect herself and her friends. it follows canon very closely and it was overall really interesting story and lore wise and had nothing mature (aside from, yknow killing) i was OBSESSED with it as a kid wish more ppl knew about it lmaoo

I swear to god I remember that there once was a fanfic about Rainbow Dash and how she got rejected from the wonderbolts. Later, Scootaloo starts bothering her, so Rainbow Dash straigh-up beats her to death using her own scooter. At the end, Applejack noticed it and stopped Rainbow, even though scootaloo died either way.

I know this is very late, but one thing I don't see people talk about is how mental illnesses are portrayed in the muffins saga. Like in Twilight's Fall, the psych ward is seen as a place where stereotypical "insane" ponies are and they're mentioned playing with toys meant for foals, which isn't what mental wards are even like for adults. Babs is somehow a forming psychopath despite not showing any signs of being one beforehand, it reads like Jeff The Killer in a way. I don't know, even though I love the saga, its portrayal of mental health is offensive in some cases.

You wouldn't believe the attachment by traumatized child-brain had to the story of Muffins. I've re-written and given alternate ends to it a million times, but nothing compares to what you ended up giving it. I fucking adore the ending beyond belief, and I am so thankful to you because you've given one of the most depressing open-ended parts of my childhood some sort of closure. And good closure, not bad closure where all the bakers end up killing the princesses and become alicorns, you gave it a happy ending, with a new element of laughter, interesting elements, and all of the mane six get to live, and Pinkie Pie is outed for the cold-hard manipulator she is in the story. Thank you.

So I want to leave my thoughts now that I’ve finished the video: 1) I am pretty sure the alicorn ending thing (which was on her Wordpress) was intended to be a “oh, you think I’m a shitty writer? yeahhh, sureee. by the way, spoilers: [something over the top].” She has expressed that she hates spoilers, and responded to a Quotev comment heavily implying the bakers will fall. As well as the fact another chapter is called ‘Kamikaze’ (I wish I was joking about that) 2) I would say that Peppo did have an affect on Blinkie, as Inkie uses it to manipulate her in Inkie’s Stellar Obsession. Otherwise, Blinkie is a pretty undeveloped character with her only traits being angry, love animal, jealous. (And my favourite cuz she wasn’t ruined lol) 3) You skipped over Silence Is Silver, and I can imagine why. It is far worse than Broken Tiara on the manipulation front, and considering the authors actions in the past… it really isn’t treated like manipulation. (note: you did, nvm, but I still stand by my opinions.) 3) The Fun Never Ends is a kinda annoying chapter. Not only does it go against Pinkie’s characterisation but it focuses on Twilight being tormented for things the author doesn’t like about her. 4) I’d argue Grudge Of A Bad Seed is a bad chapter that had potential to be amazing. The bullies characterisation is just… yeah… it’s obviously projecting things the author hates and demonising it. 4) Personally, I don’t find Sting that gross, but it does seem to lack self-awareness, push hate onto mentally ill people who’s mental illness doesn’t manifest in a specific way, and is solely there to shit on fan OC’s. 5) I’m glad you brought up that thumbnail about derpy. it always rubbed me the wrong way. 5) your rewrite is pretty interesting. I’m curious to learn more. Misc ~fun~ trivia: • Apparently Derpy is asexual because well- she doesn’t understand it. Why? Oh. Anyone can take a guess. The other characters also have weird reasoning. For example, Inkie is bi because “she isn’t very open minded so she wouldn’t be willing to date someone who isn’t female or male”. Because as we all know… that is EXACTLY how sexuality works. /s • Inkie was originally going to be schizophrenic and Blinkie is supposed to have BPD (even though she shows zero symptoms). • It’s implied that unlike in the show where Pinkie’s family are based off the Amish, they literally are Amish. Cloudy quotes the Bible in All That Glitters for example. • I could go on. But I’m already frying my brain. The response to criticism I can easily debunk. “I have autistic friends and they’re super intelligent, blah blah blah, Derpy isn’t autistic” okay right but her writing is still a bit off? “Suspension of disbelief” does not work for LWC. It’s supposed to come naturally not be forced by the reader. And the “real life serial killers” she uses to prove “real mary sues exist” she greatly exaggerated the reality of. For example, the story of H.H Holmes has always been sensationalised and exaggerated. I’m not even mad about the bakers taking over Equestria I’m mad no one to oppose them is left alive to care about. Like the mane 6 are gone. All that’s left is the princesses but they have the intellect of a rock apparently. To make the bakers smarter, everyone else is reduced to a pebble:”. Also, the Royal guards not recognising Walkie Talkie speak (which is CB channel codes iirc from my research) is funny. And the fact Cascade/Sharpshooter had zero preparation for her arrival. I don’t want this comment to become 10,000 words but one last thing. I think a more interesting thing for Inkie’s Stellar Obsession could be been if Inkie took Stella up on her offer to keep her prisoner. Would’ve been interesting idk. But nope. Every story ends the same way. *sighhh* • Minkie existing makes zero sense. The story that revealed a third sister existed explicitly said something along the line of “your older sister is doing work on the rock farm” or something. So why didn’t the author go off that? I guess it’s not that big of a deal… but still. Oh, and the way cutie marks work in this world is… interesting… Yeah I’m done. The more I try to get my thoughts out the more my head hurts. I will say this though. When I was younger, 2015, I stumbled across The Revenge Of Obsidian Pie and Broken Tiara. I was too scared to listen to anything else, being young, but those inspired me in good ways and bad ways. If it wasn’t for that, I might have not developed my interest in writing. So finding out years later, I believe 2019-2020 when I found Muffins again, that the author wasn’t a good person, and the writing wasn’t the best… was interesting. Muffins was certainly a product of its time. That’s all I can really say.

as someone who grew up listening to/reading muffins and lost all my respect for the author as years have gone on thank you for talking about this and making a new reclaimed version, i feel seen. as a little weirdo kid i felt like i could never talk about muffins with anyone despite it being a special interest of mine as a kid and eventually young teen. it makes me happy that people out there know what the author has done and aren't okay with it, and for a long time i felt like i couldn't talk about it to anyone in regards to feeling really hurt by the actions of someone you looked up to. even if it was just a gore and torture heavy fic with colorful cute ponies it meant something to me and it still kinda does. again just thank you for making this video and even rewriting the story. it really means a lot as an autistic/adhd person too that we can be critical of how derpy is portrayed, and its nice knowing that people out there share my thoughts and feelings.

I just realized something that makes the bakers imprisoning the entire town of ponyville make even less sense. In one of the Mad Musings of Obsidian entries Minkie mentions how she met a unicorn who attempted to kidnap her and imprison her and she couldn't fight back against his magic because she still felt weak from being imprisoned the first time. So how the hell does she go from not being able to fight back against one magic user to assisting in taking out a bunch of them?

The best thing to come out of Rainbow Factory is Rainbow Dash Presents: Captain Hook and the Biker Gorilla, which surprisingly still holds up today

Holy mother of god..... I researched the author after watching this and being morbidly curious. She's so unhinged...... She needs help and honestly, I feel for her husband. It's so bad, she's so mean. The internet is clearly AWFUL for her fragile mental health, and she definitely shouldn't be posting on it anymore. She seems addicted though and I wonder if at some point she started to enjoy the attention but idk. It's very concerning.

As someone who’s witnessed the rise and fall of the Muffins saga, it’s awesome to finally see a deep dive video on this series. what i think is a major issue writing wise for minkie, is how in stories like the mad musings of obsidian pie and other stories featuring minkie, she'll use a lot of very intelligent language to describe her thoughts, feelings, and views on the world. the problem is that she canonically never went to school and hasn't even had an education for 20 fucking years, so there's absolutely no way her vocabulary should be that advanced. you could say it's because she's talking to people again that it has improved but i don't really think that's enough, especially since she can barely spell and still has trouble pronouncing extremely simple words like caterpillar. i don't know how the author goofed minkie up this bad, i feel like there was a lot of wasted potential for her.

Im a sucker for Grotesque horror. Kind of a shame so many minors were exposed to it, but I have a soft spot for these old pastas (Even if some of the creators are sketchy, the more i learn about the creator of muffins the more red flags there are)

I've just now found out your channel and hearing your rewrite on a series i intensely listened to as a kid growing up just made me so happy- I was almost inspired by the og story but have changed at lot due to the...creator's not so good deeds and the writing in general. I'm so happy that there's a whole rewrite project for muffins as i truly do love the concept of it all just from the fact it spawned from literally Cupcakes. I found the Muffin's series when I was really young so a lot of the problems in the story that were there I didn't register as bad. It took up until I found the series again, say.. about a few years ago and slowly I started to see just how.. iffy and.. *Oh gods* it was. Derpy's portrayal in the original story puts a bad taste in my mouth now. I never realized just how infantilized she had been over the course of the story, though that might have been because I was a child when I first stumbled across it. (also the use of the r-slur makes me physically want to hurl) anyway, I can't wait to read your re-write. I gotta catch up on all your stuff. It's a thing that happens with me, I focus on a creator for about.. a few weeks and then suddenly I lose all interest in em before seeing them pop back up in my recommended. :P

I liked the Muffin Saga, I thought it was a cool fanfiction, but after Babs joined The Bakers, I started hating this series. The Bakers were these 6 cabalistic ponies that enjoyed torturing people, but after The Fun Never Ends, they turned into these over powered creatures that took on armies of guards that were trained by Celestia like it was nothing, and captured over 300 ponies to torture. Not to mention, THEY DID THIS WITH JUST WEAPONS AND NO MAGIC, they were earth ponies against pegasi and unicorns. They also just made Pinkie Pie a groomer, which I wasn't a fan of, and I felt like several parts of the story was just missing. I really hate the idea of them killing Celestia, and becoming alicorns and ruling the world. They also made Babs, a 10 year old earth pony, an overpowered filly. She literally took down Big Macintosh all on her own, and apparently had a huge IQ on the pony body and was able to remove Fluttershy's body but kept her alive, SOMEHOW, even though she had never seen any kind of organ before that and was 10 years old. I feel like the author really turned The Bakers into these really unlikable, flawed villains' that didn't even seem to feel any other emotion besides anger, and malice. Overall, I enjoyed the series, but only from Cupcakes, to The Fun Never Ends.

I feel so bad for Derpy, Applebloom, the Mane 5, and the innocent victims in this story, especially Twilight and Sharpshooter. Sting is literally the worst chapter in Muffins and Let's Welcome Chaos is unreadable to me. I love my girl, Inkie Pie, but fuck. I just can't with those chapters.

Can we just talk about the ableism of their first victim? Killing a depressed character to make them happy? Oh yeah, like real depressed people (such as myself) don't struggle with that. (Don't worry person reading this comment, I'm okay) Back before I understood how back Muffins was, and I was an edgelord full time, I liked it well enough, but looking back is more than just cringe. Also, poor Derpy. Why did the characters talk down to her so much? As someone also with autism, I had to pause the video and scream.

as an autistic guy who loved Muffins growing up and is only now starting to realise everything that's fucked up about this fanfic, yeah Derpy's character is a big yikesfest. i really hate how the mane 6 talk down to her, like all of them are so autistic coded they would _never_ speak down to her like that in canon, the author did all of them dirty in that scene. and i feel like Derpy's "am i stupid?" line could have been some great actual character development in her arc rather than something that's kinda brushed off by Pinkie. so many of us autistic people are made to feel stupid by the world and i feel like that would have been a great thing to explore with her character, but nah, the author just gave her a Wheatley moment (which i'll get back to) in a later canonical story and that was it. i hate how Derpy's always being described as "child-like" and whatnot despite being a _grown ass mare._ i love a fun and goofy Derpy but this is just not it.... she's always so infantilised yet not at the same time and its so inconsistent. the worst example of this is when the author said in their video about the bakers' sexual orientations that Derpy, despite being a _grown ass mare,_ wouldn't be able to grasp the concept of sexuality because her mind is like a child's. nevermind that children as young as 5 are able to grasp their own gender identity and who they love in real life, nahhh, Derpy can't do that because she's child-like. what the fuck man,, (also they said that if Derpy could percieve her own sexuality she'd be straight 💀 she would NEVER). and also nevermind that Derpy, who is apparently so child-like that she can't grasp her own sexuality, can somehow understand the complexities and nuances of death and torture to the point where she deliberately abandons her morals and breaks ponies down psychologically just to make muffins with her found family. this is so... i don't even know what to say it's so wack and poorly written i'm still reeling from it all but i think one of the worst things about Derpy's character as a whole is her arc in 'Derpy's First Project'. the author writes Roseluck (Derpy's victim) as such a blatantly ableist cow and is not-so-subtly used as a chess pawn just to funnel Derpy's anger that she uses the R slur _several_ times throughout the whole thing. not mentioning how the R slur wouldn't make sense in the canon of MLP, it's just... so tasteless in the way that it's used, and it's used for the sole purpose of giving Derpy her big character moment that's the equine equivalent to Wheatley's "I AM NOT A MORON!" line (minus the way better build-up and actual 3 dimensional characterisation of Wheatley) and it's so... shallow. it's meant to clearly be a powerful moment for Derpy, but there is literally no buildup apart from that pissy apple vendor and her backstory (which doesn't really delve deep into discrimination). had her character have actually been written in a clever way, it'd be a great moment for some cognitive dissonance where Derpy _feels_ powerful in this moment, but it's all built on lies and manipulation from somepony she thought she could trust, or something like that. but we're positioned to actually root for Derpy here, which makes it even worse because it's built up on nothing but what can be inferred in her backstory alone. i hate that it's so blatantly written as an "autism win" that's just artificially manufactured by the author just so "the handicapped one" can have a power trip. there's so many better ways to characterise an autistic character other than tired tropes and ableism. heck, MLP characterises Derpy in a much better and more nuanced way than Muffins even did. we autistic people are more than our ableism and it sucks that Derpy's big moment is just disabled pony inspiration porn. it's clear the author doesn't actually understand how autistic people work. anyway sorry for infodumping and ranting... info-ranting..... but Derpy's an important character to me because she's my favourite background horse in MLP and i love that she's become an icon for autism in the MLP fandom. i am just,, _so_ disappointed with how she was written in this story and i am mentally kicking myself for not noticing it sooner (although i was like, 9 when i first found this fanfic and only realised it was sucky like now). also Celestia knows that if i chose to talk about Minkie this comment would be WAY longer lmao. i really enjoyed this video and i'm glad there's finally a deep-dive so something i loved so much as a horror-loving kid, this video's super cool i really like it :D also i remember commenting on one of the Derpy centric stories years ago, and i said something like "i know Derpy isn't canonically autistic but as someone on the spectrum i relate to her character" and the author just replied with this snappy "TL;DR, she isn't autistic" as if i _didn't mention that in my comment?????_ sorry for being able to find a little relatability in On GOD i am so happy someone is FINALLY talking about muffins. Ive been a fan (of the story) for YEARS and it always felt so.. unrecognized? By the fandom despite the interaction the narrations received. This obscure little creepypasta was one of the main reasons I stayed in the fandom so long. Seeing how it plummeted in the later writings is a shame, but it is a joy to finally see someone talking about it. Thanks for going over this topic!

According to isaacblooms ( The KZfaqr who said she's going to remake the entire Muffins fanfic) she found the ending to Muffins apparently the author was going to have each of the Bakers become Alicorns after killing the Princess Luna and Celestia. Giving the fanfics a very unsatisfying ending.

Honestly, meanwhile a lot of people disliked the "unrealistic religious trauma" my favourite part of the series was the way it reflected religion the exact way that I always saw it growing up within my 11 year old eyes. As weird as some aspects of it were, I can fully see it happening irl and although now as an 18 year old I can acknowledge that that's not what religion is meant to be, unfortunately it highlights the way it is in certain countries perfectly.

I've always wanted to know more about Muffins ever since I saw a video of it, but I never really got around to it because of the amount of content it has. So it's nice to hear you give a deep dive of the series.

I was never really into the Creepypasta section of the MLP fandom but I was exposed to a lot of gore and… *corn* (censored for obvious reasons) at a young age. I only recently got into Grimdarks and this video has given me inspiration to read/listen to even more. Story of the Blanks is definitely one of my all time favorites!

I love the Muffins Saga but it kinda ends with a cliffhanger because in the chapter "Sting" it is said that Luna is the only pony who has a chance at stopping the bakers because she can do something that Celestia can't. I assume that its going inside dreams but we never get anything after that. And according to the Wiki, The Muffins Saga was supposed to have 3 more side stories, 3 main stories, and another Mad Musings chapter. Unfortunately we didn't get that so now we're left on a cliffhanger for all eternity. It's like the original Teen Titans all over again.

Someone referring themselves in third person is hard to get right. Characters like Invader Zim? That works! He’s an egotistical maniac. Him referring to himself in 3rd person makes sense. The moment you’re doing it to make someone stupid, you’re on a very slippery slope. As a joke it can be okay so long it has nothing to do with any sort of disability.

Dear Rainbott, Thank u so much for rewriting the Muffins saga! I've been re-reading your toyhouse page of "icing on the cake" over and over again, its just so good!! Thank god u managed to fix derpy, because when i was younger, i thought that the way the original author wrote derpy was 'accurate'(dear god...) I was 11 when I stumbled onto the muffins series. I was in my horror-loving girl era and I loved it to bits, Minkie was my favourite mainly because i felt sorry for her and because I thought it was really cool that she could sort out the liar in the room. I was quite surpised by the incessant gore/torture sequences, but I still read them because I wanted to see what happened next in each chapter(I didn't read the whole chaos chapters because was like 'lets welcome chaos? That doesn't sound like muffins at all'. I didn't read silence is silver because I got a little scared, thank god).It was until I got to 'sting' that I was like, thats it?! What happens next? Why arent there any more chapters?! I stopped obsessing over it until u came out with this video and I was like 'a muffins video? I havent revisited that in ages'. Your rewrite gave me closure to my 11 year old self who wanted to know how muffins ended. I want to say thanks again for your portrayl of derpy because I am autistic/ADHD myself and I didn't get it why she had odd speech patterns. I also did'nt know about the whole 'oh pinkie didn't groom apple bloom to be a killer, she made that choice!' so thanks for saying that pinkie was totally grooming apple bloom to be this way. There's just 2 questions I want to ask. Apart from your toyhouse page, is icing on the cake gonna become a whole fanfiction series like the original was? And what happens after execution day? I honestly loved the muffin series and still do because of how much I loved it in the past. I haven’t been able to watch it since the creator made it so you have to become a channel member to watch. So far I haven’t found/seen any re-uploads pop up.

I've always been a big fan of the Pie sisters and family in general and am writing some stories for them too! I can't believe Muffins is the story that included them, as I grow older the story didn't age well for me and I dropped it pretty early too (around Jail Break chapter). Your version of the story is definitely a step up from the original!

In my opinion, muffins is the worst my little pony fanfiction of all time, at least sweet apple massacure was one story. Muffins has 37 stories. It’s also really ableists towards autistic people which is disgusting. Also, it’s 90% gore and rarely are their non gorey stories. It’s like listening to a cannibal/serial killer documenting their murders.

not only was the author of muffins a bad person, i truly believe their whole writing and all of their works are pure garbage. yes it's just an opinion, but if you're going to write a story, make it work? and if you aren't going to make it work, don't be surprised when a fandom (mostly a fandom like this) gets upset with your work. some people do not have the correct mental state to be on the internet and they are a perfect example of that. i've watched their "apology" video but it's more of just a guilt tripping video and and another interdiction to their channel. i think they're pathetic personally

Icing on the Cake has got to one of the dopest re-writes I've ever read! It was genuinely good and the ending had be gasping and jumping in delight! Nice work!

I watched muffins as an edgy middle schooler and was obsessed with it, I still do kinda like some of the ideas from it, but there's also some stuff that I don't enjoy, so because of all that I'm working on a project that's basically "Muffins: but what I would've done"

my opinions on Muffins nowadays is so. weird I used to love the series when I was a kid, but now that I'm older I'm able to realize how.. bad a majority of the series is. Most of the plot points don't make sense, the Bakers are horrendously overpowered to the point where it's not even funny, and the pretentious writing style makes it difficult to even gain ironic enjoyment for me. Nevertheless, it'll always have a place in my heart because of how obsessed I was as a kid, even if I really just spend most of the time currently making fun of it lmao

I really liked the part of this video where it lists the names and summaries of various popular MLP creepypastas; I only ever heard of those first two popular ones. It really shows the scope of this whole field, and in that way it kind of reminds me of the "iceberg: explained" genre. I really enjoy exploring a rabbit hole in that fashion, as it just shows you several paths to take and then just sets you free to explore them as you like. It's a nice way to preface the deep dive.

I never expected to see an In Depth Deep Dive into the Muffins saga after so many years but i am so glad this video exists. Was hooked on this series when i was younger and now seeing it get reclaimed (from an admittedly terrible author) into an excellent story is amazing. thank you for your service & Icing on the cake is such a good read!

Also i adore the rewrite, I love how it plays into thr actual world. Thats one thing that bugged me about a lot of mlp grindarks, they don't take ibto account for the actual world the characters are in, just our world but with magic when it's needed for the plot--

I personally can’t wait to read your rewrite as it seems entertaining and perhaps even an improvement. For the other fics, they were as good as you might think nowadays but still, I do wish a better take for some as well.
