This song is a masterpiece. I have to argue, one of the best rock/metal songs of all time. A pure performance that showcases how amazing this band was. The peerless vocals, the awe-inspiring guitar solo, the incredible drums...the entirety of the band as a whole as they craft something pure and flawless all wrapped in a moral story.

After Deep Purple's Child In Time; this is my (second) all-time favourite song. Blackmore (Deep Purple guitarist) met Ronnie Dio when the latter opened for a Deep Purple US Tour in 1972 (with Dio's band "Elf") and when Ritchie Blackmore wanted out of Deep Purple he contacted Dio to do some recording sessions. Dio agreed but wrinkles in the Deep Purple camp were ironed out and the couple of songs that were recorded stayed in a drawer until things finally came to a halt and Blackmore left Deep Purple in 1974 (of note is the fact that Roger Glover; Deep Purple bass player, used Ronnie Dio for vocals on several of the songs of his 1973 animation movie called "The Butterfly Ball". The latter had a worldwide hit with "Love Is All" that was sung by Dio). Ritchie recruited Elf again and the 1975 album "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" was the result. For the follow-up "Rainbow Rising", Blackmore fired everybody except Ronnie Dio; the late and great Cozy Powell was recruited on drums, Jimmy Bain on bass and an unknown by the name of Tony Carey on keyboards. The "Rising" result was a bit of a shocker at the time, with two memorable songs in the guise of "Stargazer" and its continuation "A Light In The Black"; both clocking-in at over eight minutes. Best album of 1976 for me. Thanks for another wonderful reaction. EDIT Wrote the above before actually watching the vid, so I missed the fact your calendar turned a full cycle. I knew you looked a bit different. Happy birthday Rich ;)

@@angharaddenby3389 Sure. I'm aware that the Hammond intro and singing melody was nicked from Bombay Calling. Blackmore and Lord admitted that and I have the It's a Beautiful Day LP... Doesn't change my feelings about Deep Purple nor Child In Time.

@angharaddenby3389 5 жыл бұрын
Ah! I somehow thought you'd know but wasn't sure. I have found many on here that do NOT realise this. Same goes for the intro to Smoke On The Water - that was nicked too. From the 3rd Pink Panther toon no less! Doesn't really matter where the tunes come from, they are both eternal classics - but their origins should be more known.

So glad you had the opportunity to listen to this epic song and that you enjoyed the experience. Ronnie James Dio, the vocalist, is considered one of the godfathers of metal and, by many, as the voice of metal. He is also credited with introducing the metal horns \m/ to the genre. It was one of his signature performance staples. His solo band 'Dio' with the song 'The Last In Line' was my intro to Metal, and I fully credit that song, in particular, for my conversion from pop music to metalhead. Anything Dio-related is golden, in my eyes. Peace

Wow. Hearing your experiences of having parents who would only allow you to hear classical music just brought it home to me how infinitely fortunate I was to be raised by a very open-minded father who introduced me to all kinds of great music; from Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rainbow through Tchaikivsky, Beethoven, Liszt, Vivaldi via John Lee Hooker and Alexis Korner, while also encouraging me to find my own tastes, and embracing all of that too. So, I've listened to a hell of a lot of music in my time, attended a lot of concerts with my Dad and appreciated all of it. I hope these suggestions and first listens bring you as much joy as I've experienced in my life with these tunes.

We are all blessed to be able to experience such talent and artistry. It doesn't matter these songs fall into such and such a genre or style of music. Life is short. We are all just lucky to be able to experience it. And make no mistake - rock music is as legitmate a form of music as any classical or jazz form. in this case, with just 5 musicians, the song is as evocatiove and emotionally challening as any clasical piece. And the musical talents of the performers are the equal of any. The band is tight and focussed, every perfomer contribting to the overall sound. Ronnie James's talents are the equal of any singer while Ritchie's prowess on the guitar is now the stuff of legend. Like I said - we are all just so lucky to be able to live and experience such wonderous musical talent and expression. Long live rock and roll.

"The Last in Line" or "Don't Talk to Strangers" are a couple of good first songs to start listening the solo career of Ronnie James Dio, the singer of this band.

Oh yes! I also loved "Caught In The Middle", "Straight Through The Heart", and "Egypt (The Chains Are On)" as well. With Dio's first two there are really no bad songs, it's a question of whatever mood you're in.
