A small, easily skip-able, scene to "Drive" the point home that Selfridge is a prick. Seriously what is it about golf that makes people look more evil? Avatar belongs to 20th Century Fox and Lightning Storm Entertainment.

When you watch all the deleted stuff and the movie you get a much better view of all the characters especially the humans. Selfridge you find out is a good guy. He was sent there as a corporate manager really nothing more, he's constantly fighting to keep the military from attacking the Na'vi. He basically set up the Avatar program so humans could communicate with the Na'vi and he's been saying to them the whole time, "hey humanity is coming, they are coming soon, you need to move I can only hold the military and extreme corporate interest back so long. He tries to keep the Marines from attacking a final time but the Marines stage a coup and he's basically removed and kept under watch. quartrinch himself is explained as basically having ptsd. HIs first couple of months possible years, he was reasonable and decent, but so many of his guys kept getting fucked up on missions of peace he finally loses it, he also so really fucked up war back on earth and was kind of sent to pandora as decent place to be stationed and it turned out to be a total hellhole. Then on earth you've got a giant fucked up wars over energy which went bad so everyone is desperate for any kind of power source on earth and other planets that humanity has taken.

It would have at least made the movie less black and white. One of the biggest and most reasonable complaints lodged against this movie is that it is so incredibly one sided in favor of the Navi in it's finished form. All the humans except for a handful of scientist and one pilot are depicted as complete assholes in this movie that was released. The Navi are shown to be at one with nature and living the pure life connected to their world. There is no gray area, no shading and it makes for a visually beautiful movie but very flat one dimensional storytelling with very strong political overtones. Overall Selfridge isn't a good guy. He's a guy in over his head, and over his level of understanding but he's no hero or even an antihero. Quartrinch is a product of a lifetime of military indoctrination bad PTSD and the macho culture that is built around male virility. He was the wrong man for the position and he was ill suited to handle the role assigned to him. But that doesn't him a good guy an anti hero or misunderstood. It makes him a bit more sympathetic and less one dimensional but he is still the villain of this story. The Navi simply didn't want anything that the humans could offer in exchange for what they had that the humans wanted. They had no incentive to trade and nothing the humans had was of value to them. But that doesn't mean that they weren't at constant war with each other, that they weren't susceptible to disease and untimely death and that there weren't Navi who took their war against the humans too far to the detriment of their own people. A lot of the deleted scenes and backstory would have made this story more real and 3 dimensional but it doesn't change the overall arc of the story or eventual outcome.

Last time I checked, the "convert to the white man's way or else" treatment of native americans is still considered genocide, just like the "only good injun is a dead injun" treatment, just not as implicitly violent.

@@ashleighelizabeth5916 To be fair it is possible James Cameron didn't want it to be less black and white, he wanted a specific view pushed on this subject. One doesn't have to like it but in the end it is his, and anyone else who had that final creative control, call on it. I would love to see this movie with all the unfinished scenes. The continuity would be far better but it might be four hours long... the original theater release had holes that didn't convey the potential conflict: It didn't make sense why the colonel was so motivated attack the home tree. While the colony is isolated in time his actions would surely have resulted in a Senate investigation "back home". Oliver North didn't get out unscathed. The humans of course had an ultimate way of dealing with the "indigenous" population: Evacuate to orbit and use the transport to drop a few tons of rock debris at 1% of light speed. The energy release would sterilize the planet.
@kidinsomnia13734 жыл бұрын
Another problem with Avatar was that they deliberately left out a key concept, something which was later written into an in-universe style book on Pandora. Humans originally went to Pandora not to harvest unobtanium, but to gather collect plants that feed on chemicals poisonous to Earth plants. Why? To remedy pollution. Humans didn't go as conquerors, but were asking for help, and the Na'vi refused, kinda violently. Unobtanium was discovered later.

If you think of it, Parker Selfridge had the most stress because he is the leader of RDA's operations on Pandora. His morality is often downgraded by his commitment to the company he works for which stresses him out. It is why he keeps justifying that they need to take down the "savage" Na'vi to retrieve Unobtanium. For a wealthy guy, Parker spent most of his RDA life on Pandora since Day 1 and there is no record of him swapping places with another RDA administrator. Parker likely knew he would never return to Earth yet stayed on Pandora. Also, he had to handle complaints from the scientists, Avatar Program members, and RDA mercenaries regarding things on Pandora such as the Na'vi. I kept wondering if he is actually greedy because money is worthless on Pandora and I never see records of him actually returning to Earth. It is unlikely he has a family on Earth. Parker is selfish but a different kind of selfish in my opinion. What Parker means by "out of time" is that the RDA Board of Directors is threatening that if Parker does not mine the Unobtanium immediately, he might be replaced by someone more ruthless than he is and they will use full military force on all the Na'vi. It is kind of hard to understand Selfridge if we don't know the ruthlessness of the RDA Board of Directors and its CEO.

The worst part of this scene is how it shows how the Na'vi have hit a societal and evolutionary dead end. Dr. Augustine says that this tribe of the Na'vi have been living in Hometree since before Human history began. That's over 6000 years. They haven't moved from bows and arrows, an invention that man created in the Paleolithic period, 70,000 years ago. Riding animals like humans did 6000 years ago. They are living in tribal communities and while yes, they share a symbiotic relationship with Pandora, this hinders their development since Eywa; Pandora's sentience, keeps the Na'vi from developing.

Time to say something controversial but lets try to look at this not only from the human's perspective but the Corporation's perspective. As cool as it is/was to have the scientist using the avatar program as a way of learning and studying the environment of Pandora, that was NEVER the intent of the Avatar Program. The Avatar Program was just a way for the Corporation to develop a relationship with the Navi tribes. In a sense, misusing corporate property by in a sense using it to learn Pandora's ecosystem. In this case, it was mostly about trying to get them to leave. Now, they knew, from the BEGINNING, they were never gonna leave their home. Lets face it, no one would if they had a connection like that. HOWEVER, the issue is rather than telling that to CEO they chose to neglect to tell them anything and delay the Corporation's operations for what seems to be at the very least a few months. This in a sense wasted time, money, and possibly lives. And now, she had the audacity to go up and tell the CEO to wish to extend more time, which really wasn't to continue negotiations but moreso to ensure they keep their lands, neglecting the job that they were sent to do in the first place. One could make the argument of moving to another location. However, as was stated in the film where they were sitting in was unfortunately the richest deposit of minerals within 200 clicks, or roughly 120 miles, from where they were. That in itself is already far away. Anywhere else would either be a net loss or be too far out, further endangering the crew. I mean in the beginning of the film the trucks were attacked and burned, likely traveling from shorter distances. So you can imagine what would happen if they had to build a mine lets say 200 miles away.

It makes perfect sense as to why they cut this scene. "What difference does it make when it happens. I'm sorry but we are out of time." That is an oxy moronic line.
@Tink72002 жыл бұрын
It’s not. He’s making two different statements. She was arguing that it’s their ancestral home so he should at least spare them three more weeks there. To which he responds that there is no difference in destroying their home now rather than three weeks from now when the outcome is the same. Pushing it back isn’t going to change what happens. Then he tells her that they cannot wait any longer anyway; because the company expects them to act now.

This deleted scene further solidifies my position on the thing i was just arguing with some numbskull avatar hater about. He literally claimed that jake "forgot" to talk to the navi about moving for the mining operation, and that we was just wasting a bunch of time doing nothing instead of getting them to move. Literally the plot of the movie is that he has to gain their trust before he can get them to listen, because they hate the humans, and wont listen to anything they say. Avatar haters really dont have a leg to stand on.

Selfridge is a lot more reasonable than Quaritsch. He doesn't seek out conflict, instead striving towards the diplomatic approach. The "I'm sorry dr. Augustine" reflects that he respects her as an accomplished scientist, unlike Quaritsch who has an anti-intellectual attitude. The fact remains that the objectives of the RDA and the Na'vi are diametrically opposed.

I've heard this said before as well, but one of the fun little details that helps balance the film was that little tidbit: "It's been their ancestral home since before human history began" Although the Na'vi have a deep spiritual connection, they're _horribly_ under developed. They've had all this time, and they're living in trees, eating fruit, fighting little wars. The humans here are always presented as the "bad guys", but at the end of the film, the "bad guys" all leave and return to explore the infinite cosmos, while the na'vi live in the dirt, waiting for a good plague to wipe them all out.

Their biological need for scientific progress might not as great as ours. Or their evolutionary process favored the stronger bodied/willed than the more intellectual. whatever the case, they lived happy lives with what they had. Ignorant to the mysteries of the universe. And the planet rewarded them kindly. You can say that makes them stupid blue monkeys, but they're not polluting shit or destroying other people's home for their thirst of ambition.
@dfmrcv8624 жыл бұрын
@@paulstaker8861 Not sure the planet “rewarded them kindly”. They have seriously dangerous predators to deal with, some they are not really able to kill without great risk to themselves, and lets be honest, their medical situation isnt the best. The planet keeps a balance, sure, but it also clearly impedes progress. If what Agustine says here is true, that means that the Navi had been living like this for *millenia* without any hint of progress. I mean, even the Native American and African tribes our great grandfathers encountered had advanced to some measurable degrees in the thousands of years they lived in their respective lands, with both Africa and America having had actual empires that spanned for miles, but the Navi have never even had that idea occur to them. That may work for them if they were the only sentient species in the universe, but they arent. Seems to even border on suicide, as *unlike* human tribes when faced with technologically superior forces, they actively refuse to incorporate any bit of foreign technology, most Jake seemed to manage was teaching them proper weak points for their ballista sized arrows to do more damage, and even then, that battle was won when the entire planet launched an assault. Gonna have to side with the humans here, too much progress can be a bad thing, but the opposite isnt exactly the better option.
@paulstaker88614 жыл бұрын
@@dfmrcv862 The planet did reward them kindly. They lived relatively peaceful lives in harmony with the predatory creatures. They even tamed some (banshees). And their tech did advance over time (tools, weapons, clothes, musical instrument, ride harnesses, furniture, etc.). They advance at a slower rate, and perhaps already peaked since they don't feel the need for any more progress in this field. They are content and comfortable with their tech level. Similar to the native american tribes, they did spread to different parts of the planet and formed tribes with unique attributes like shown in the movie (Omaticaya's a musical tribe, there's a banshee tribe and "horse" tribe, and perhaps more).
@paulstaker88614 жыл бұрын
@@dfmrcv862 Avatar 1 shows the very first armed conflict between the navi and the humans. They had no time to familiarize themselves or even acquire human tech to help them. The most that could be utilized was Trudy's "chopper" and Jake's human-made weapons, and they did utilize those. I think from Avatar 2 and onwards, we may see the Navi adopting human combat tech as they're expected to face a returning human force larger than in Avatar 1.
@dfmrcv8624 жыл бұрын
@@paulstaker8861 Yeah... “relatively peaceful” doesnt really mean much if walking around the grass can get you eaten alive by a pack of six legged wolves, and while content and comfortable is a factor, but keep in mind that it was only because their goddess told them that. Take the example of the different tribes and notice how none are really what anyone would call a fully established nation. You would think there would be some level of higher coordination with each other if they all worshipped the same god that actively speaks to them... and yet they remain separate. What worries me is the implications, as if Eywa would cull any tribe that got a bit too powerful or too advanced. I mean, think about it, a whole world connected to a sentient being, yet all they do is sit around in trees even when a threat large enough to destroy them shows up? And I dont think we will see Avatars with human tech in the sequel. They were very clearly against manmade weapons, tools, vehicles... anything because it wasnt connected to Eywa. I think they mostly made the exception with Jake because they needed them then. Maybe Ill eat my words later, but it doesnt seem in character for them.

Before human history? With genetic memory like that they should be thousands of years more advanced than us. Pathetic.
@thewhompingwampa26712 жыл бұрын
Advancement comes from a need to change. They have no need to advance as voraciously as us. They have aerial and terrestrial mounts, so no need for cars or other vehicles. Trees which store their memories like bio-computers so no need for high tech PCs. Plants which glow at night so no need for unnatural lighting. And lets not forget Eywa, the collective consciousness of every plant and animal of Pandora. If the Na'vi attempted to industrialise, Eywa would send a wave of animals to wipe them out. Why advance when their society is clearly flourishing and sustainable where they are?

Even James Cameron can't predict how the future would be like. I am totally okay with it. I know it's a movie, but, the dressing style and everything is basically the same. It's the year 2154, and I would expect absolute change in technology. Jake is still shown using a pen drive. In just 20 years, storage devices have transformed so much. We use Pen Drives, not fancy looking Floppy Disks. How come they're still using Pen Drives in the 22nd century? Also, there's not much change in helicopter designs. Again, no issues here. Just pointing out.
