My SIL had a mechanic tell her she needed a new engine by coming out and just listening to it. Had her take it to my trusted mechanic friend. Turns out it was a FU by the same mechanic done previously, The distributor was not fastened so out of time and some other miscellaneous sloppiness.

He seems to be an excellent mechanic, within his limits. He operates in Florida, so he isn't very experienced in dealing with large amounts of serious rust. He is not a welder, he is not a machinist, as we saw when he tried to deal with the broken bolt on the subaru. To be fair, "can you remove a broken bolt" is an economic question more than a technical one. If the object is valuable enough, it can be removed.

26:11 had the EXACT same thing happen in an old 4.0 WJ, including starting out in 2nd gear. It ended up being a little plastic pressure sending unit located on the valve body in front of the filter. Replaced it and the missing reverse when cold and the starting out in 2nd instantly went away. Not sure if his XJ has the same trans, and I’m assuming you guys swapped the trans out by now, but something to think about next time you encounter this issue.

I totally agree! I drive a VW New Beetle. Just going from 16" to 17" wheels messed up my torque. I took them off and sold one set. I still have the better ones, but I refuse to use them. My car is a 2006, 2.5L 5cyl, 5 spd manual. 289,000 miles, and still on the factory clutch. With the bigger wheels and tires I could feel the clutch having to work harder. Vws are expensive and hard to work on. I didn't want to replace the clutch just because the wheels looked really awesome on the car.

I have the same model Jeep and I love it. I bought it knowing it would need a trans as it would start in 2nd/3rd gear. I priced a junkyard transmission and included that mentally in my costs for the vehicle. Then I discovered that I could manually shift to 1st then to 2nd and 3rd with no problems. Reverse worked fine too. I figured when it quit I would put in a transmission. That was about 5 years ago and it still works fine as long as I shift it myself (and down shift at stops). Who needs automatic shift anyway? Ha Ha. Try it, you'll like it!

The real limiting factor with any lift kit is the differential housings and axle tubes. Ah that dash / cluster brings me back to childhood. Had a 1988 Jeep MJ / Comanche 4.0 I6 to be my first vehicle. However a DUI driver totalled it before I got it... Guy lived 2-3 blocks from 7/11, he drove his car to get more booze / beer. Rammed the passenger side door while stopped at a red. 2 wheels came off ground. The DUI left his license plate mangled in the cab. Minor damage to DUI car cause he had the 50mph bumper lol Arrested DUI, hit and run, etc Judge ordered restitution and they garnested his wages and fled only got $60. Prob back to Mexico....

With the amount of brake clean that you use on a daily basis has got to be getting expensive. Have you considered getting a small chemical cleaning tank? Cut a 55 gallon barrel in half lengthwise, bout some angel iron to the ends and put some legs on it,. Use about 15 gallons of varsole and 5 gallons of used transmission fluid, you've got a great cleaning bath.

I’m always surprised how dirty the underside of other ppl’s vehicles are. Especially when they start wrenching on them and don’t bother cleaning up first. This one isn’t bad.

@RainmanRaysRepairs If you ever find yourself up in Calgary (Canada) I would LOVE to spitball with you about the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 I've been rebuilding for storm chasing. Just be sure you come in the summer, I feel like you wouldn't enjoy a Canadian winter 😂

Watching this before going into work in my 96 Cherokee. She’s bone stock but that’s how I like ‘em. Dependable as long as you are pushing the massive rubber that Troy is, need a Dana 44 for that. I think Chrysler 8.25 rear is only good up to 33’s with stock gearing.

Nice video, Ray. I am a retired mechanic and also own a '92 Cherokee (My Toy.. lol). The AW-4 in your Jeep is well known to be virtually indestructible and replacement is rare unless it has been heavily abused. However, they do have solenoid hang-up issues when the fluid changes have been neglected. You may want to look into a solenoid issue and give it a full flush before replacing the transmission. They are relatively inexpensive.

I nominate this Vee-Heckle for the premier version of Jeep repair. That’s where you take the key fob off of the current set, and apply it to the keys for a different Jeep. Repair completed.

I love watching you restore this relic! If I were ever to be dumb enough to buy a jeep, I would buy one like this. Lol! Yee Haw! Lol! Personally, I say try and drive it for a while, and rebuild the one in the floor. Get a new torque convertor, or have it rebuilt. I think this P.O.S deserves the effort. You are right about that thing looking puny. Lol! Do you even read your comments?

You can unplug the TCM and the trans will become a manual shift, if you have 1-2, 3-4 in the manual mode then there is an electronic issue.

I have yet to see a transmission suddenly start working properly after changing the filter and fluid. If anything, I have found changing the fluid removes what is left of any grit the bands were using to function and the new fluid causes even more slip to the point the transmission no longer functions at all. Kinda like using engine flush on an old worn out engine . Suddenly it becomes a smoking bomb due to flushing out the carbon and goo that was actually helping control oil leakage past the rings. I have experienced both in the past and nothing good becomes of it. I hate changing engines and transmissions any more.
