I find using silicone lubricant really helps those polyurethane bushes slide into place. Oil based lubricants cause them to stick when fitting.

Yup, when I put Eibach sways on my golf r, it comes with little packets of silicone lube, for the polyurethane bushings, which are more solid than the stock rubber ones on the stock sway bars, I think you are right, the right lube matters

Before installing that new bush into the cross member, I would have first smoothed off the inner metal corner around the entrance into the sleeve, make sure you have correct pressing in tools to hand, then warm the sleeve up using a hot air gun, then immediately get the bush out of the freezer (making sure it is "properly frozen") line up the bush and press it in while it is still frozen and the sleeve is still warm. I do admire most of the work you do, but with this job in your haste you made it difficult for yourself, you did not smooth off the inner metal corner around the entrance into the sleeve, did not have correct pressing in tools to hand, did not warm up the metal sleeve, did not have the bush properly frozen.

I think the center portion of that bushing comes out from one side then can be reinstalled after the rubber portion is put in place

This was the most difficult struggle I've ever seen you go through. Maybe the bushing was meant to come in from the other side to avoid getting off center? All I can say is that the pain was real, and I felt it here in Ireland.

I also thought that in the begining however I also remembered we used to use silicone spray lubricant inside where the bushing goes & that makes them slip in easy.The silicone lubricant comes with most polyurethane bushings.

I wonder if more prep work on the hole after you removed the old bushing would have helped. Use a flap sander and then a polisher. Light silicone lube on the parts and then sweet talk it a bit.

You bet, I always put a little bit of a bevel in it to make it start a bit easier and yes lube. Found dish soap worked very well on bushings. Grease and oil just attacked the older rubber bushings but synthetic lubes are good as well.

I'm almost certain that you cut the polyurethane at around 3:15 - What a mess, Ray. Polyurethane and silicone grease go perfectly together. As a result of the heavy handedness, the center hole of the bushing is no longer center with the bore of the frame.

Interesting that the additional torque provided by the long handled ratchet was abandoned for the weaker right angle impact wrench when struggling with the last 1/8" of the top of the bushing. Power tools are not ALWAYS the answer. 🧐

The bush, designed to absorb impact and be flexible was laughing at those impact drivers. Should have stuck with the ratchet.

I think so. The bushing being rubber/neoprene was just bouncing and not moving. The constant, building pressure provided by the long handled ratchet would probably have made the chore easier. These days, autos and light trucks are serviced/repaired with 1/4" drive socket tools. Back in my day ('60's, '70's & '80's) autos and light trucks were about 50-50 3/8" drive and 1/2" drive. Heavy trucks (diesel OTR, dump trucks and the like) were 1/2" drive and 3/4" drive. Pneumatic impact wrenches were available but incredibly expensive. I saw my first Air Ratchet (Snap-On) in 1974 and it cost 1/4 the price of my Snap-On tool box and the tools in it! (About $250 as I recall.) @@therealswarvey

If i remember correctly (and there could if been a modification to the part) the brass center bush originally came out and you virtually pushed the blue bush in from the OTHER side, just drawing the last half in then reinstall the brass center (lubed up) which again you can partly push in then use the installation tool to draw it the rest of the way through, normally done with none air tools but they help and takes no time at all....... you live n learn 😂

the key to install is to use a ball type cyl hone to clean the inside surface then creating a slip lip on edge of the frame part with die grinder. small amount of lube and in she goes!

If you had reversed the tool the cup would have acted like the hose clamp. A bit of silicone grease might have helped.

I really am amazed at how many different jobs and different cars you will work on. So many shops tend to have a narrow scope of what they will take on. Depending on the job, I can see shops sending me off to more specialized shops for work. Since watching you, I take on most of my own repairs because I've been exposed to so many of them on your channel. I did learn my lesson on my 2004 Dodge Dakota Truck transmission. I thought I could get away with swapping parts, but no deal. Gave it to a transmission shop paid big bucks and still had to order the computer programmed for my truck and install it myself. The transmission shop said it was part of the problem, but they gave up on messing with the computers after a few bad experiences.

Rainman, with polyurethane bushings it does help to freeze them overnight and use a silicone lubricant. I have a feeling that bushing will wear out prematurely based on how it was seated.

I have a BMW X3 E83 (Aug 2007) and I placed my front wheel bearings in a zip bag in the freezer for a few hours prior to installation. I also used anti-sieze grease.

Back in UK around 1965, I was a engineering apprentice and spent a time in the R&D Met lab testing this new brown rubber like material called polyurethane. The idea was to uae it for lower press tools, using it to deform the metal around the top tool as it was pushed into the polyrethane. Nice to see 60 years later we still think of it as a new material.

Instead of the hose clamp, next time use the cup of the pressing tool as the outer guard to prevent the rubber squishing out. So put the pressing disc into the cup, put it over the bushing and pull from the other side with a plate big enough to bridge the hole. A bit of silicone lubricant helps.

If I'm not mistaken, Nissan does NOT sell the bushings separate. They sell you the entire subframe.

There needs to be a better tool. Ray had the idea of using the hose clamp, which helped. Maybe a small engine ring compressor or something of the sort. Honestly, that bushing is so tight, I really don't see how it is even necessary. It should just be a bolt hole, the other bushings will give it enough bounce, IMO.@@legionofanon

I was surprised with the lack of lube on install (needs to be dry fit so there's no possiblity it spins in the housing? IDK) , but hindsight is always 20/20! One of those tough ones you want to forget about.....

I feel the same but there is no OEM part. They only sell the entire rear subframe :-(. Plus the OEM fluid filled bushing would just fail again

Unfortunately there's no OEM part. This is one of those jobs you do once and it'll last the lifetime of the car. Doing it on your back on your driveway without power tools is even worse than what Ray had to do. Ask me how I know lol

Very nice work. I recommend Aerokroil for your future penetrating lube supplier. Not only does it unstuck the unstuckable, It also lubricates the unlubricable. Been happily using it for over 20+ years!!!

It's not cheap, but time is money. Kroil has been my 'go to' for over 50 yeas. I've used it servicing production machines, rusty farm equipment and on automotive applications. A few times it has worked to un-stick stuck piston rings(and it produces billows of beautiful blue smoke).🤣

On one of my old cars (back in the 80's), I needed to replace some bushings, and being a bit of 'ye olde mechanik', i machined some hockey pucks to shape and used them - worked fine and no issues !

Not to the end of the video yet but wanted to mention, as was said in the comments of part 1 the removal cup should have been turned around to give a positive stop on the bushing not allowing for deflection. It is possible that without deflection you would have only squished the bushing and not pulled it through but I think it would have been worth a shot. The other thing is you should have greased it when it was cold. I have no idea if the bushing HAS to be a dry fit though.

Really nice to see you wrenching on another non-truck for a bit of a change-up Ray, but holy cow what a PITA work order! I doubt there are scores of owners who accomplish this feat in their driveways and live to tell about it. 😅 That is one sweet-looking G37S, you could eat off the undercarriage and the shine off of that black paint looks miles deep -- if ever a vehicle that has crossed your threshold is deserving of fender cover precautions it's this one. I watched a video for the rear bushing replacement, the guy fitted the outer part of the bushing from the front of the crossmember by tapping it in with a small mallet then inserted the inner metal sleeve, perhaps Ray should have watched a couple of videos himself before starting the job?

Because its a polyurethan bushing it may actually shatter if it trys to bend to cold. But metal to metal that is for sure the case. @JohnCompton1

I did that job on my 09 370Z on my garage floor, it was a pain in the arse. Took me all weekend and of course the biggest pain was that bushing. I feel your pain Ray! It's beer TIME!!!!

This is so similar to a 1997 Lexus LS400 I did this same(ish) job on a few months ago. The driveshaft rubber ends are the same (what I call roto couplings). Over time we had to replace both rubber ends of the driveshaft as the were cracking and we also learned there was play in the center bearing of the driveshaft. I was really stunned how the Lexus & this Infiniti are almost exactly the same. It is a great system and is long lived but doing this work is a must. My friend Mick has owned the LS400 for over 10 years and it has 160,000 miles but started to clunk on the diff so this job is a must. It also reminds me of the Triumph TR4 IRS & Triumph TR6 diff systems I deal with. A great system and not too hard to work on. I know you went through heck fitting the main bushing, and that bushing looks cool, but Mick and I have learned that it is better to stick with OEM parts as you almost had to do. All in all you did a great job as always! I think this shows that although aftermarket parts are cool they can offer odd fitment problems.

Some have reported that the factory OEM bushing is not available from Nissan as a standalone part from the entire stamped crossmember on these G37 Infiniti vehicles, thus the aftermarket and royal PITA option. 🤔

OH!!! That makes perfect sense. I should have known that the only way to get the bushing was get the whole member. Thanks for clearing this up. We were able to get OEM parts for Mick's Lexus so I just figured it would be that way on this car. Over the years I have come to just get the 2 part pour in rubber but I know that takes time that most don't have. I did it on 1964 Pontic axle arms but that is for sure not a daily driver. Thanks again

Urethane bushings usually don't like to be forced into position, cold and silicone spray or grease no petroleum products.

Looks like a liquid nitrogen dip might be the only way ! Or using the correct, identical bushing to the original !

I actually think the problem could be that the rubber is absorbing most of the impact energy. You could probably get better results with a straight pull on a standard breaker bar, with a socket. But, those bushing pullers never work the way they do in the instructions, or the maker’s demonstration videos, so this whole saga just proves that Ray is human. After seeing this, if one of those ever comes my way, the crossmember is coming out and getting brought to the press. No messing about.

Great job Very well done for your perseverance but only one other observation didn’t the other two bushes have a washer top and bottom when fitted back on the vehicle

Ray made sure to put them back on. Believe me, I thought he forgot, but when he was installing the differential, I did see both washers on the top. So they did get installed.

I had a G35 and never had to do this. It had 104k miles before trade in back into my Mustang roots. They are fun cars but I miss my V8s!

Ray, metal encased came out so metal encased would have been much easier to install. If I were you I would have ordered OEM bushing and gave the customer back his bushing.

I've always said that I wish I had half of your tools. Thought it would be so much easier working on cars. Though after seeing what you just went through it's the mechanic not the tools. Understandable the one finger salute

I was watching to see if you tightened those nuts on the carrier. I have had garages forget them 3 out of 4 times on my F-350, which is a pain.

I am in the Toledo Ohio area, so not too far from A-rod. You are so lucky to not have to deal with rust belt corrosion.

I noticed in video 1 that both axle drive shafts had yellow marks lining up with yellow marks on the hub flanges, but noticed that they were not aligned when you reassembled them, are they balanced shafts, and would this affect the smooth running of the rear differential or wearing of bearings etc?

I saw that too! But I was looking for them on the main drive shaft flanges and there weren't any. I'm not sure how critical it really is, but I guess you could get some unwelcome vibration if it upset the balance. Someone had obviously thought it worth keeping the alignment at an earlier disassembly, and the owner can easily now see that Ray didn't!! 😉
