Rainwater Harvesting Tank - plumbing, fittings, float, valves [OFF GRID]

This rainwater harvesting tank collects water from our garden pavilion roof. In this third part of the series I install all the pipes, fittings, hoses and valves. This tank is for harvesting rainwater for our flower and vegetable gardens. An off grid solar system will run the DC pump to feed the irrigation system around the pavilion.

Next trick running the hole saw backwards to keep it from grabbing in the plastic. Never heard of that until this video but very clever. Thank you as usual for another interesting and informative video. take care, stay well and keep up the great work.

great job I love it how clearly you explain everything. I have always put hoses in hot water before putting it in a fitting it slides in better then soapy water. but great job can't wait to see next one

An easy way to get that clear PVC tubing to fit is to soak it in boiling hot water first.

Also a heat gun blowing through it. Useful for bending PVC as well, if care is taken.

Id be scared, drilling the hole at the bottom of the tankf or that bulkhead fitting! have you experienced any leaking in those locations?

Been considering how to clean out the tank when the bottom accumulates gunk without having to drain the tank. I thought a 6hp wet vac adapted to rv filter [draining back into tank] would do it, but not good enough suction. My next attempt will use the wet vac end piece adapted to 10' of 3/4" pvc adapted to a filter adapted to water pump. I expect to mop/suck up the muck on the tank bottom from the top opening of the tank and return the filtered water back into the tank. Tank cleaned [hopefully]. Would like to see your idea.

Maybe something like a swimming pool bottom vacuum.

@@MANaboutTOOLS yes, that is one way to go. The issue for me is that it would be dedicated to cleaning only the tank ... that gets used a few times a year. That would be a good *right* solution. I've been looking towards a reusable/modular solution so my pump can be used elsewhere when it isn't needed to clean out the cistern. I like efficiency even if $$$ isn't an issue. I concede that modular *may* not be best - especially when I've put the $$$ into multiple attempts. C'est la vie.

Why isn't there a gasket between the nut and tankside on the fitting you added?

If you look at the fitting at the 3 minute mark you will see a rubber gasket. That will be up against the inside wall of the tank. And it will seal when the nut on the outside is tightened.
