As someone else in another reaction said. This was before autotune and her voice is so clear. So perfect, never an off note. Nobody today would sing her songs without autotune and even with it they couldn't come close. Pure perfection.

EXACTLY the same here! I had to hide my appreciation of her from my hard rock-loving bandmates, I knew they'd never let me hear the end of it. I remember where I was when news of her death came over the radio. I pulled into a nearby parking lot and cried and cried... Honestly, no other musician's death affected me so profoundly.

When I was a teenager and was out cruising with my friends on a Saturday night, the Carpenters would come on the radio and we would all race to see who could change the station. We were just way too cool for the Carpenters. But when I was at home and they would come on the radio ,I would race to turn it up. I was a closet Carpenter fan. Years later, I found out that my friends were all closet Carpenter fans too.

Karen was a once in a generation voice, just a natural instrument and gift from God. She is still so missed. Thank goodness we have the music to always fall back on and remind us of how special she was. And Carpenters would not have achieved the success without Karen’s brother Richard who had an amazing ear for music and a natural talent for arranging and producing. You should check out these other hits by them “Superstar” and “Hurting Each Other”

Karen was sweet and humble. She didn't "over sing" and try to impress people with her power like so many singers do. She thought of herself as a jazz drummer first and a singer second. Amazing talent and when combined with her brother's musical genius of composing, arranging, doing harmonies, and playing keyboards, they were an unbeatable duo! Nothing like this in today's music, sad to say.

Love and light Harri! I tried. I listened to the intro, but had to stop when I heard her voice. I was a huge fan. Her death had a tremendous impact on my life; and in fact, probably saved it. You see, I was going through my own battles with body image and eating disorder. Her death from exactly what I was doing to myself changed everything. I'm healthy (ish lol) and happy. I'm 63 years old now. But the sound of that beautiful voice still breaks my heart. ❤️🙏😇 Always

It absolutely breaks my heart that this gifted young woman NEVER saw herself as the greatest vocalist and beautiful person that so many of us saw in her. How could that be with all this to give the world this beautiful woman ended up costing herself her life. Sometimes when whe n I hear her voicec i still cry to this dsy....for all the beauty and inspiration that could have been made but for her lack of strong self image. Let this be a cautionary tale for others. Thank you, God, for the gift of this angel.

A number of their songs (even covers, which this one is) seem biographical, even prophetic, about Karen. Haunting. Listen, for instance, to "Eve", one of Richard's own compositions, from 1968, recorded for Carpenters' 1969 debut album. It's absolutely spooky in places...

Another thing Richard Carpenter did was invent the power ballad subgenre of song. Check out "Goodbye To Love" from 1972, written and arranged by Richard. Terrific lead vocal by Karen (of course), and what at the time was incongruous (not to mention controversial) fuzz guitar solo work by Tony Peluso of Instant Joy...you can draw a straight line from that song to, say, Evanescence...

One of the most perceptive modern day reactions/reviews I have heard. Her voice STUNNED me when, as a late teen, I first heard their version of Ticket to Ride. Today, after Richard worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to redo some of ther songs, a whole new generation can now listen to this unique, once-in-a-lifetime voice. I heard it in person twice and feel so very lucky that I did.

Karen's voice is so smooth, so clear, you cannot miss a word... and that goes for every song that she sang.

Karen Carpenter is my favorite female singer. If I could sing like anybody, it would be her.

This song always takes me back to the days when life was slower and carefree! She was an Angel among us!

Her voice is mesmerizing. When she sings you are compelled to just stop and listen. She could sing the New York city phone book and you would be riveted, listening, until it was finished.

I was praising her voice back in 1970 when I was in 7th grade. Now that she's dead everyone else jumping on the band wagon. The first time I heard "Close to You" on the radio her voice sounded like an angel and I pretended she was singing to me.😍
