Being sick isn’t fun. Caught a cold and have been doing nothing but sleep. Fortunately, I am starting to feel better and tonight I am making some dinner. This will be my first real food in three days. It is nice and comfortable inside. But outside is cold and rainy. The forecast is calling for rain for the next two days at least. But this is normal Fall weather in the Pacific Northwest. I enjoy the ASMR of the rain tapping away on my metal roof. It’s very relaxing listening to the rain. Hopefully, I will be over this illness soon and can get out and enjoy the rain in the forest. Until then, it’s great to have a warm and comfortable space inside.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

FYI - Safeway (and their related stores) has a website where you can place a grocery order and then they wil bring it out to your van when it's ready. Helpful for when you're sick. Hope you feel better soon!

Just remember that the people who pick those orders are verbally abused all day by customers and management, have only a few seconds to pick items which are unattainable, and the workers are severely underpaid for their work.

@BigGoucho oh cool. The mug is from Kleen Kanteen. It’s a double wall stainless steel mug. I did a video on it a while back (I think). It’s an awesome mug but pretty small. For some odd reason, that particular series of mugs from Kleen Kanteen isn’t stocked by very many vendors. I bought it at a food cooperative in Humboldt. And that’s simply a sticker with my name on the mug.

I have a sound machine app on my iPhone & I have a sound machine in my bedroom , I will not sleep without my rain sound ! My daughter also has the app and sleeps with rain sound !

I hope you are back to 100%, soon. I had a cold a few months ago, after not getting sick for almost 3 years. I worked through Covid at a waist water pump station project. I am back to wearing a mask and hand washing when in crowded indoor situations when the illness numbers start to rise in my area. I like not getting sick... Thank you for taking us along on your journey.

I totally understand what you mean. I only drink applejuice when I am ill. If I would drink it when I am okay my brain will make me feel ill. We have a lot in common. Mostly the good things, thankfully😂

I totally get the “tired of sleeping” thing. I don’t get sick often but I do have enough days where I feel down and stay in bed way past the point that it feels good anymore. Glad you’re feeling better! ☕️

September 1st, I was walking from my van to a lot cal restaurant when my left leg gave out, and as I collapsed, my right leg twisted twisted and my fibula snapped. So I had to stay in bed for a couple of weeks to allow the healing to really start. And then, i caught a cold from my neighbor (he's camping in the woods too) who was helping me while I was not able to go anywhere. That said, oh heck yeah, being in the van made everything so much easier, bith with the broken leg, and the cold. As someone else pointed out once I was moving around more, I ordered online with Safeway and they just brought it out to me! I'm glad you are starting to feel better, and hope you make a full recovery soon!

Scott, I admire you for living life your way. Interesting about not wanting coffee when you are sick. It's an early warning signal for you, then. I find tea very comforting, too. Being Irish, a cup of tea solves everything here! Honey, is nature's antiseptic, of course, so that'll help too. Weather really miserable here too but no floodwater where I live, thankfully. I was a confirmed tea drinker my whole life until I discovered cappuccino when I was 19. I broke up with tea. Well, I cheat on coffee with tea if I'm sick or if it's Fall.

*Also, if you haven't already, I would consider a cheap gym membership for using their hot saunas and for taking hot showers. Saunas are very good for your immune system and overall health in general. Lookup studies on saunas and you'll see how scientists are saying it even increases lifespan. If you do 20 minute sessions in a sauna 3-4 times a week, it's great for your cardiovascular system (heart & blood vessels) as well as boosting your immune system. I'd do that for 20 minutes a few times per week, then take a nice hot shower when I'm sick. The membership would be worth it. I also hear that people sleep in their vans in the gym's parking lots without any issues, especially when they're 24/7 gyms.*

These days I am feeling like avoiding large crowds is a better option. Especially when it is cold and flu season. I do not recommend sleeping in a gym parking lot. That is private property and something I never do. It is not legal to park on private property without the written permission from the property owner.

Exactly the same happened to my electric candle lighter. Left it on solar panel and it got rained on just a little. Fully charged but no longer worked. Had to throw it out.

Glad you are feeling better. ‘Sick’ tea really does helps with healing the body and the mind. My sick tea is Sleepytime tea but lately, I’m liking the chi tea, too, with its warmth from the spices. I usually add warm milk for smoothness. It’s like a warm hug. 🫖 When you finally leave the van and get some fresh air and sun, you’re going to instantly feel so much better. I know it. ☺️

That’s funny. I had some Sleepytime tea, too. Thought it got tossed out but found it deep in the backup food storage. Not sure we’ll see any sun anytime soon but I got out for a walk in the rain today

Lol, yeah, Sleepytime tea can collect dust but it’s there when we need it. Fresh air and some walking still so good to shake off that ‘sick stuff.’ My mom (r.i.p.) always made me get outside to knock out its last hold.

It’s maybe nice to splurge on a hotel room when you are unwell to take advantage of the steam shower. I know it’s expensive but it is good to do something nice for yourself occasionally. I love to hear the rain.

Scott just started your video, and sorry to hear (yes, I'm a mom and can hear it in your voice), you are sick. But please take my advice on this. Next time you are sick in a van, shell out some of your savings and get room for a few nights. Staying in the damp, and whatever else kind of elements you have to subject yourself to living in a van, you are taking chances of catching pneumonia or a bronchitis infection. I think you should go ahead and still get a room because from the sounds of it, you may still not be out of the woods with this cold. Hope you better.

🥣I often intentionally make soup and chili bland so I can spice it the way I want it later since sometimes I don't want it spicy, say if I eat it for breakfast. I add chili powder and garlic powder and salt after cooking. You can roll the spice through your fingers to activate the flavors ( as opposed to heating them up). I'm sure you know this since you worked at a restaurant. The cups are a good idea.🥤

The Muir fire roasted tomatoes are fantastic. I get em at Winco so a bit cheaper than a Safeway. They are great for making tomato coconut milk soup! Yum! My favorite soup with garam marsala and chick peas fried in peanut oil floating on the top!

You can always brown some regular paprika in a dry non stick skillet to substitute chili powder when you desire low to no spice in your food

Thanks Luis. Although I couldn’t disagree with you more about vanlife being bad in any way on mental health. Of course I can only speak for myself on this subject but vanlife has been the single best thing I have ever done for my mental health.

Hey🎉 please take this as a loving suggestion. When sick or even when not, it’s best not to eat from same vessel you cooked in . The leftovers are then contaminated. I would portion out and then the leftovers are safe.❤❤
