Күн бұрын

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson speaks with former-Scientologist and podcaster Aaron Smith-Levin. They explore his upbringing within the “church,” how Scientology entices new members, the basis for Dianetics in Freudian psychology, the religiously inspired twist only found behind multiple paywalls, the higher being known as Xenu, what broke Aaron’s belief, and his now ongoing fight against the manipulation of this still relevant, international cult.
Aaron Smith-Levin is a former Scientologist and host of the “Growing Up In Scientology” KZfaq channel. He was also a main interviewee on the docu-series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.” Since leaving the cult, he has devoted himself and his career to unmasking the harmful practices and beliefs held by the international religion.
This episode was recorded on December 23, 2023

A-A-Ron is Scientology's worst nightmare. And their own fault. He offered them to never speak publicly about his negative experiences in the cult, as long as they left his family alone. They declined. And decided to enforce disconnection on he and his wife's family. Creating their own worst nightmare, which you see here before you today. An unstoppable juggernaut of truth. ❤

As a former life-long Scientologist, I'm really impressed with this interview. Everyone tends to be dismissive of Scientology but Peterson really took it seriously and explains how so many smart people can become sucked into it. And Aaron had great explanations - i kept listening for him to make an error or strawman Scientology in same way, but as far as i could tell he was completely accurate and fair throughout.

That is the thing about cults and religions they promise things that cannot be quantified and give good people purposes and confidence that they are doing and living correctly. EVERY human being intelligent or not has some sort of belief that they are living right because of X and when you have a giant powerful organization whispering in your ear about how your sacrifices are doing great for others that makes you a hero you more then believe it you WANT to believe it. That to me is what the human race calls devotion. It is also why I cannot and will not ever believe in any religion or group of power. There is an old saying that fits well here, 'The Mob is the Mother of Tyrants.' Diogenes

A person from that cult still continue to contact me trying to get me in after over 30 years. The damage my mother leaving us caused us is indescribable. When Scientology dictator David Miscavige says "PINK LEGS," his lieutenants know exactly what he means From the 12 February 1967 Policy Letter *The Responsibility of Leaders*, a.k.a. the Bolivar Policy Letter: ___________________________Begin quote_________________________ [The power asks] 'what are those dead bodies doing at the door. And if you [the subordinate] are clever, you never let it be known HE [the power] killed them - that weakens you and also hurts the power source. 'Well, boss about all those dead bodies, nobody at all will suppose you did it. *She* over there, those pink legs sticking out, didn't like me'. 'Well', he'll say if he really is a power, 'Why are you bothering me with it if it's done and you did it? Where's my blue ink?... ...always push power in the direction of anyone on whose power you depend. It may be more money for the power, or more ease, or a snarling defense of the power to a critic, or even the dull thud of one of his enemies in the dark, or the glorious blaze of a whole enemy camp as a birthday surprise... ...Real powers are developed by tight conspiracies of this kind... and if they are right and also manage their man [the power] and keep him from collapsing from overwork, bad temper or bad data, a kind of juggernaut builds up. ______________________________End quote___________________________

Fantastic conversation. My father was a minister at Calvary Baptist church in Clearwater Florida during the 80s and 90s when our church was located not too far from the main Scientology building. I remember-as a child- observing the people involved with the place. We saw and heard about so many things that even as a child and teen, I couldn't understand why anyone would want to be part of something I found to be a bad place. An intimidating and scary place. There was even an uneasy feeling one would have. As I got older and learned more about their organization, I realized how accurate those feelings were as a child to say the least. There were times when Scientology members would come to our church seeking help to get away from them, even members who came from other countries. The church of Scientology wouldn't give them their passports back and when they wanted to go back to their own country. They were frightened and rightfully so. I heard a couple of them were higher ups, if you will. Many of the people you would see coming out of the main building and walking to other buildings were quite young. Sometimes they were walking in groups and I noticed they were not smiling and it wasn't often you would see them talking to each other. They kept to themselves and they wore uniforms and I noticed some had different color shirts. As a child at the time, I wondered if the different color shirts had something to do with what level they were at. We would see dark limousines pull in the main building all the time. We wondered who were in those cars. You couldn't drive pass the main building without even a glance or wonder what was going on in there. Through the years we were at Calvary, they were already taking over that part of the city. They would even try to talk our church leaders in to selling our church to them. Our church was the historic church with a beautiful dome. Sadly the church is no longer there and located elsewhere. Anyhow, it certainly left an impression and I often wonder where the people I observed are today and how they're doing in life. I hope in a better place. 🙏

I've been subscribed to both Dr. Petersons channel & of Aarons, 'Growing Up In Scientology' channel for many years. I never thought these 2 amazing men would have a meeting of the minds, & am thrilled that this interview has taken place. After co-founding the Aftermath Foundation, Aaron has grown his channel to 225k Subscribers thanx to his refreshing honesty & openess with his viewers in every aspect of his sometimes painful life. His passion for exposing the cult of Scientology is unstoppable. He has exposed the abuses & flagrant violations of labor laws, child & elder abuse, credit card fraud, bait & switch programs, bribing of politicians, law enforcement, judges, & non-elected government officials; destroying families with their 'disconnection' policies & intimidating women to have abortions. Scientology obtains their millions not only from celebrities & successful business people, but also on the backs of their average Scientologists whom often fall into bankruptcy by manipulation & intimidation of the 'Church'. Any members who want to leave the Church are "fair-gamed"; which means an open war of harrassing, stalking, threats against family, getting people fired, by the use of private investigators, undercover operatives, & other covert & overt tactics. Members have unalived themselves when 'fair-gamed' but these incidents as well as 3exua1 abuse are always hidden from authorities. Aaron has bravely expoused that Scientology has turned from quasi 'religion' to essentially a for profit business that buys prime real estate globally. Congratulations to Aaron for his achievements in exposing these abuses, as well as his campaign to strip the IRS Tax Exemption from this business masquerading as a religion. Thank-you to Dr. Peterson for inviting Aaron to share his thoughts with this global audience. (Edited - Spelling)

If I were interesting enough to be interviewed by JP, I guarantee that I'd be unable to hold up my end in a compelling way like Aaron just did. I'd spend the whole time geeking out over the different angles JP approaches each subject from, how he can coax a more thorough explanation by his framing of a question. I've heard Aaron's full story several times. This time was VERY different. His story retold in an intellectual/philosophical context somehow just made me grasp his experience emotionally......wha?....how? Bravo.

The seduction I got from the conversation was, at each 'level' 1) Nothing is your fault 2) You're special 3) You can save humanity Each of these would draw you in deeper. For a lark, my BFF and I went to a Scientology recruitment meeting. We were grilled, double-teamed, and each told that the other had joined. We were told that as 'clears' we would be able to fly and manipulate reality at will. What a hoot. (we didn't join)

@@klaj6595 Honestly much more than I have time to correct in this comment. For one, Aaron sat there and intentionally dd not correct Jordan when he mistakenly tried to compare how and E-Meter works to GSR - completely wrong and Aaron knew it but it suited his purposes to let Jordan make that mistake. For another, The whole Xenu thing is a complete red herring. First of all Aaron is claiming knowledge of confidential OT levels THAT HE HAS NEVER DONE. I know Aaron. He never even reached Clear, let alone OT levels, so all he is doing is repeating other people's rumors about that. But besides that, if you were to read THE MAJORITY OF ALL THE MATERIALS IN SCIENTOLOGY you would find ZERO references to this "Xenu". Let's assume for argument's sake that it is mentioned in one of the OT levels. Even if that is true, it would be a reference to some event that happened in a PAST LIFE, not a central tenet of the religion, as is always portrayed. Scientology worships no gods at all as part of the religion, unless you are also part of another religion and you worship one from that (which is OK because Scientology is ALL-DENOMINATIONAL). People keep trying to paint Scientology as a "cult" but the whole idea of a cult is controlling WHAT YOU BELIEVE. But Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard say the OPPOSITE OF THAT -- that you should not take ANYTHING in Scientology on faith and you should test every claim of Scientology to see if it is true for you. Plus it has no problem with someone being part of Scientology and another religion at the same time. What kind of cult does that? It doesn't make sense and the more you compare these claims to Scientology and what it really is the less and less Aaron's claims make sense.

I grew up Mormon and can relate so much to what is being said. One of the strongest Christian gospel notions of testing the truth that helped me was. Deuteronomy 18: 21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. The second really strong gospel notion that hit me was. Jeremiah 17: 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

There are many good discussions by many ex-Scientology members, if you’re interested in learning more. If you have concern about your family members, please know if you even hint at anything negative against Scientology they are obligated to disconnect from you. So tread lightly. From my understanding anyone trying to wake someone up 1. Stay in touch, be a non judging safe place for them 2. Send them information about other cults and perhaps they’ll make the connection on their own.

I would truly love, and I do mean love to the fullest definition of the word, to see Mr Peterson comment on early Hubbard seminar's where he explains many of the things you touch on in this video. The upper level stuff does not have readily available Seminar's for. But the entry seminar's that boosted the population of Scientology to it's highest points were arguably brilliant (given the success of Scientology). Watching a Peterson reaction/break down video over Hubbard's most famous Seminars would be incredibly powerful to waking people up to the cult they find themselves in. Example: The e-meter is easily one of Scientology's most successful tools. One could easily argue Scientology would not exist if the e-meter had not accompanied it. When Mr. Peterson spoke about the galvanometer and that it was being studied by Psychology dozens of years (at least?) before Scientology and is still used to this day, was actually incredibly surprising to me. I assure you, most, if not all, Scientologists believe that the e-meter technology was entirely an invention of Hubbard.
